Status Buying Responses in a Survey of Students and Variations in Informational Levels.

    Get PDF
This article reports on a survey of a large number of undergraduate students in the U.S. They were queried about whether they preferred living in a society where they had high relative income (status) but low purchasing power or a society where they have low status, but high purchasing power. While the overwhelming majority indicate a desire to buy status, the information given about intergenerational mobilty and amenities like health available in the different socities makes a big difference in the responses. The data indicate that that the majority desiring to buy status disappears with better information.

The Demise of Separate-But-Equal : The Role of the Supreme Court in the Racial Desegregation of Education

The United States Supreme Court, on May 17th, 1954, changed the existing law regarding the issue of segregating white and black school children in separate schools. It was not the first time in American history that judges had influenced the course of race relations

A Comparative Study of Student Demand for Status in Ireland, Italy and the United States

    Get PDF
This paper reports on results of surveys of hundreds of students in Italy, Ireland and the United States that show that if simply confronted with questions about their preferences for high relative income at the expense of absolute income that a) a substantial fractiongive inconsistent answers and b) that the remainder are overwhelmingly status conscious. It also shows that where they are given more information about the benefits of higher real income that there is a significant decrease in this preference for status. The results are remarkably similar in all 3 countries and what differences exist are consistent with what we know about their differences in intergenerational income mobility. It also sho ws that when the price of status is changed American students response is highly inconsistent with any fully formed preferences for status. This is somewhat less so in Italy. Overall the results throw doubt on one of the empirical linchpins that has been used to bolster the idea that relative income is what people seek.

Examining the Relationship Between High School Achievement and the Competing Values Framework

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between student achievement assessed longitudinally in terms of ACTcomposite scores and state-mandated tests of proficiency and the perceived manner in which high schools resolve the tensions and tradeoffs illuminated by the Competing Values Framework(CVF). To answer the study\u27s five research questions, a secondary analysis that applied hierarchical multiple regression to an existing dataset was undertaken. The dataset in question combined information from the 2013 administration of the Teaching, Empowering, Leading, and Learning (TELL) survey in 287 Tennessee high schools with concurrent school demographic and student achievement data archived on the Tennessee Departmetn of Education (TDOE) website. In the ten multiple regression analyses conducted, student demographic characteristics proved ot be the most important factors in explaining variation in student achievement, whether measured as three-year averages of ACTcomposite scores or three-year averages of student EOCassessments in Algebra Iand English. Although faculty demographiccharacteristics appeared to be directly linked to ACTcomposite scores, no such direct links were observed with respect to student proficiency scores. Over adn above these backgroud variables, the Competing Values Framework (CVF) porfiles concerning balance , an external orientation, and a disposition towards rational goals were all associated with higher ACT composite scores, but only the CVF balance profile was significantly linked to student proficiency scores

Initial Trade Study for In-line Silver Sensor for Spacecraft Potable Water Systems

    Get PDF
Ionic silver is currently baselined as the biocide for microbial control in potable water systems for future space exploration missions. In-line monitoring of silver ion concentration is desired for system feedback control to introduce and maintain sufficient and safe levels of biocide in the water. To date, NASA testing of silver biocide system prototypes has made use of an Ion-Selective Electrode (ISE) for in-line silver concentration measurements. However, known issues with ISE technology have continued to motivate a search for alternate sensor systems. Although devices capable of detecting silver are available for terrestrial applications, these systems are generally not well-suited for the unique demands of spaceflight. Desired attributes include: low weight, volume, and power consumption; stable, autonomous, and in-line measurement capability; long calibration lifetime; and limited maintenance requirements. This paper provides the results from a preliminary trade study conducted on three candidate silver sensor technologies: ISEs, Anodic Stripping Voltammetry (ASV), and Fiber Optic Chemical Sensors (FOCS). The review of these technologies includes the rationale for their selection, an overview of the principles of their operation, and a detailed assessment of their strengths and weaknesses relative to the anticipated requirements of future spacecraft applications. The study concluded that none of the currently-available versions of these technologies is suitable for immediate application to spacecraft systems; further technology development should be considered. To that end, recommendations for forward development work have been proposed and provided herein
