    Structured Light-Based 3D Reconstruction System for Plants.

    Camera-based 3D reconstruction of physical objects is one of the most popular computer vision trends in recent years. Many systems have been built to model different real-world subjects, but there is lack of a completely robust system for plants. This paper presents a full 3D reconstruction system that incorporates both hardware structures (including the proposed structured light system to enhance textures on object surfaces) and software algorithms (including the proposed 3D point cloud registration and plant feature measurement). This paper demonstrates the ability to produce 3D models of whole plants created from multiple pairs of stereo images taken at different viewing angles, without the need to destructively cut away any parts of a plant. The ability to accurately predict phenotyping features, such as the number of leaves, plant height, leaf size and internode distances, is also demonstrated. Experimental results show that, for plants having a range of leaf sizes and a distance between leaves appropriate for the hardware design, the algorithms successfully predict phenotyping features in the target crops, with a recall of 0.97 and a precision of 0.89 for leaf detection and less than a 13-mm error for plant size, leaf size and internode distance

    Three Numerical Puzzles and the Top Quark's Chiral Weak-Moment

    Versus the standard model's t --> W b decay helicity amplitudes, three numerical puzzles occur at the 0.1 % level when one considers the amplitudes in the case of an additional (f_M + f_E) coupling of relative strength 53 GeV. The puzzles are theoretical ones which involve the t --> W b decay helicity amplitudes in the two cases, the relative strength of this additional coupling, and the observed masses of these three particles. A deeper analytic realization is obtained for two of them. Equivalent realizations are given for the remaining one. An empirical consequence of these analytic realizations is that it is important to search for effects of a large chiral weak-moment of the top-quark, the effective mass-scale is about 53 GeV. A full theoretical resolution would include relating the origin of such a chiral weak-moment and the mass generation of the top-quark, the W-boson, and probably the b-quark.Comment: 18 pages, 1 postscript table (revised to better explain notation, model #1, add a little material...

    The paper reviews the current trends of toxicological testing of chemicals in the U.S.A. and the methods of data generation for risk assessment and regulatory purposes. The recent survey conducted by NAS/NRC revealed that only a small fraction of widely used chemicals have been tested toxicologically. In spite of developments in short-term toxicological tests, using non-mammalian test species continue to be indispensable.In evaluating carcinogenicity tests, the current approach is generally based on the assumption that there is not threshold.Under the regulation of the Toxic Substances Act 1977 (U.S.A.) the responsibility of providing toxicological data lies with the manufacturer. The National Toxicology Programme emerged as a new governmental agency for toxicological evaluation since 1978 integrating a number of pre-existing testing activities in U.S.A. A number of private testing laboratories which can provide test data on contract basis also have come into existence in U.S.A. The guidelines published for risk assessment by the Environmental Protection Agency is expected to provide standards for the conduct of toxicological tests used for regulatory purposes.     A Composite Little Higgs Model

    We describe a natural UV complete theory with a composite little Higgs. Below a TeV we have the minimal Standard Model with a light Higgs, and an extra neutral scalar. At the TeV scale there are additional scalars, gauge bosons, and vector-like charge 2/3 quarks, whose couplings to the Higgs greatly reduce the UV sensitivity of the Higgs potential. Stabilization of the Higgs mass squared parameter, without finetuning, occurs due to a softly broken shift symmetry--the Higgs is a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson. Above the 10 TeV scale the theory has new strongly coupled interactions. A perturbatively renormalizable UV completion, with softly broken supersymmetry at 10 TeV is explicitly worked out. Our theory contains new particles which are odd under an exact "dark matter parity", (-1)^{(2S+3B+L)}. We argue that such a parity is likely to be a feature of many theories of new TeV scale physics. The lightest parity odd particle, or "LPOP", is most likely a neutral fermion, and may make a good dark matter candidate, with similar experimental signatures to the neutralino of the MSSM.     Electron-phonon interaction in quantum-dot/quantum-well semiconductor heterostructures

    Polar optical phonons are studied in the framework of the dielectric continuum approach for a prototypical quantum-dot/quantum-well (QD/QW) heterostructure, including the derivation of the electron-phonon interaction Hamiltonian and a discussion of the effects of this interaction on the electronic energy levels. The particular example of the CdS/HgS QD/QW is addressed and the system is modelled according to the spherical geometry, considering a core sphere of material "1" surrounded by a spherically concentric layer of material "2", while the whole structure is embedded in a host matrix assumed as an infinite dielectric medium. The strength of the electron-LO phonon coupling is discussed in details and the polaronic corrections to both ground state and excited state electron energy levels are calculated. Interesting results concerning the dependence of polaronic corrections with the QD/QW structure size are analyzed.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure
