Multistep greedy algorithm identifies community structure in real-world and computer-generated networks
We have recently introduced a multistep extension of the greedy algorithm for
modularity optimization. The extension is based on the idea that merging l
pairs of communities (l>1) at each iteration prevents premature condensation
into few large communities. Here, an empirical formula is presented for the
choice of the step width l that generates partitions with (close to) optimal
modularity for 17 real-world and 1100 computer-generated networks. Furthermore,
an in-depth analysis of the communities of two real-world networks (the
metabolic network of the bacterium E. coli and the graph of coappearing words
in the titles of papers coauthored by Martin Karplus) provides evidence that
the partition obtained by the multistep greedy algorithm is superior to the one
generated by the original greedy algorithm not only with respect to modularity
but also according to objective criteria. In other words, the multistep
extension of the greedy algorithm reduces the danger of getting trapped in
local optima of modularity and generates more reasonable partitions.Comment: 17 pages, 2 figure
Avian lens spectrin: subunit composition compared with erythrocyte and brain spectrin
Chicken lens spectrin is composed predominantly of equimolar amounts of two polypeptides with solubility properties similar, but not identical, to erythrocyte spectrin. The larger polypeptide, Mr 240,000 (lens alpha- spectrin), co-migrates with erythrocyte and brain alpha-spectrin on one- and two-dimensional SDS polyacrylamide gels and cross-reacts with antibodies specific for chicken erythrocyte alpha-spectrin; the smaller polypeptide, Mr 235,000 (lens gamma-spectrin), co-migrates with brain gamma-spectrin and does not cross-react with either the alpha-spectrin antibodies specific for chicken erythrocyte beta-spectrin. Minor amounts of polypeptides antigenically related to erythrocyte beta- spectrin with a greater electrophoretic mobility than lens gamma- spectrin are also detected in lens. The equimolar ratio of lens alpha- and gamma-spectrin is invariantly maintained during the extraction of lens plasma membranes under different conditions, or after immunoprecipitation of whole extracts of lens with erythrocyte alpha- spectrin antibodies. Two-dimensional peptide mapping reveals that whereas alpha-spectrins from chicken erythrocytes, brain, and lens are highly homologous, the gamma-spectrins, although related, have some cell-type-specific peptides and are substantially different from erythrocyte beta-spectrin. Thus, the expression of cell-type-specific gamma- and beta-spectrins may be the basis for the assembly of a spectrin-plasma membrane complex whose molecular composition is tailored to the functional requirements of the particular cell-type
Testing of molded high temperature plastic actuator road seals for use in advanced aircraft hydraulic systems
Molded high temperature plastic first and second stage rod seal elements were evaluated in seal assemblies to determine performance characteristics. These characteristics were compared with the performance of machined seal elements. The 6.35 cm second stage Chevron seal assembly was tested using molded Chevrons fabricated from five molding materials. Impulse screening tests conducted over a range of 311 K to 478 K revealed thermal setting deficiencies in the aromatic polyimide molding materials. Seal elements fabricated from aromatic copolyester materials structurally failed during impulse cycle calibration. Endurance testing of 3.85 million cycles at 450 K using MIL-H-83283 fluid showed poorer seal performance with the unfilled aromatic polyimide material than had been attained with seals machined from Vespel SP-21 material. The 6.35 cm first stage step-cut compression loaded seal ring fabricated from copolyester injection molding material failed structurally during impulse cycle calibration. Molding of complex shape rod seals was shown to be a potentially controllable technique, but additional molding material property testing is recommended
Extracting Spooky-activation-at-a-distance from Considerations of Entanglement
Following an early claim by Nelson & McEvoy \cite{Nelson:McEvoy:2007}
suggesting that word associations can display `spooky action at a distance
behaviour', a serious investigation of the potentially quantum nature of such
associations is currently underway. This paper presents a simple quantum model
of a word association system. It is shown that a quantum model of word
entanglement can recover aspects of both the Spreading Activation equation and
the Spooky-activation-at-a-distance equation, both of which are used to model

Critical joints in large composite aircraft structure
A program was conducted at Douglas Aircraft Company to develop the technology for critical structural joints of composite wing structure that meets design requirements for a 1990 commercial transport aircraft. The prime objective of the program was to demonstrate the ability to reliably predict the strength of large bolted composite joints. Ancillary testing of 180 specimens generated data on strength and load-deflection characteristics which provided input to the joint analysis. Load-sharing between fasteners in multirow bolted joints was computed by the nonlinear analysis program A4EJ. This program was used to predict strengths of 20 additional large subcomponents representing strips from a wing root chordwise splice. In most cases, the predictions were accurate to within a few percent of the test results. In some cases, the observed mode of failure was different than anticipated. The highlight of the subcomponent testing was the consistent ability to achieve gross-section failure strains close to 0.005. That represents a considerable improvement over the state of the art

Towards an understanding of nanometric dielectrics
Dielectric studies are described aimed at providing an understanding of the charge storage and transport of an epoxy resin containing TiO2 nanoparticles. Comparative results for conventionally filled composites are given, and the results discussed in terms of the underlying physics. It is shown that nanometric fillers mitigate the interfacial polarization characteristic of conventional materials with a reduction in the internal field accumulations
Shatter cones in Illinois: Evidence for metoeritic impacts at Glasford and Des Plaines
Shatter cone fragments were recovered from rock cores at two previously suspected, but heretofore unverified, impact structures in Illinois. Both sites are buried features known from geophysical surveys and drill holes. Shatter cones are accepted widely as field criteria of meteoritic impact. Detection of these shock indicators in both the Glasford Structure and the Des Plains Disturbance upgrades these sites in Earth's inventory of known and suspected impact structures from possible impact sites with compatible structure and morphology to probable impact structures which possess also evidence of shock metamorphism
Alienation, Psychology and Human Resource Management
This paper revisits the issue of alienation and work. Although Marx saw alienation as an
objective reality, others argue that it is a subjective experience of powerlessness,
meaninglessness, isolation and self-estrangement. Feelings of alienation are also a central
construct of existential psychologists, who focus on separation of the individual from the
presumed ‘real’ or ‘deeper’ self. The question arising from self-estrangement in the
workplace is whether modern management techniques have been able to alleviate such
feelings. The effects of work structures, various management strategies and the adoption of
human resource management as a set of unitarist principles are examined. It is argued that a
number of approaches by management have failed to provide any respite from feelings of
alienation and, further, that human resource management has tended to produce practices that
have also failed. At the same time, the ‘soft’ version of human resource management model
with its unitarist ideals has the potential to assuage feelings of alienation
Let's be professional about this: Ideology and the psychological contracts of registered nurses
Aims This study explores whether there is evidence of an ideological component in
the psychological contracts of professional employees, as well as evidence of credible
supporting commitments by their employer.
Background Fundamental changes in the employment context have prompted many
individuals to seek a closer alignment between themselves and their work, as well as
with the organizational and broader societal contexts. For many professional
employees identification with their professional ideology is a significant factor in
producing such an alignment.
Method The study uses an exploratory qualitative approach to analyse interview
data collected from a sample of registered nurses employed in an Australian public
hospital.
Results The analysis identifies psychological contract terms best understood by
reference to an ideological currency. It also suggests that the organization is perceived
as obligated to provide credible support for that professional contribution,
and the perceived lack of such support has significant impacts.
Conclusions The findings raise doubts about the utility of the concept of a psychological
contract that recognizes only economic and socio-emotional exchanges
for understanding the psychological contracts of professional employees
