A Redefined Role for Tuba in Jazz

    Get PDF
In accordance with the York University MA composition thesis guidelines, I propose to create a body of work consisting of several original jazz compositions. This project will utilize myself as composer with the tuba at the heart of the compositions, often as the featured musical voice. The writing will demonstrate the tuba from not only a bass position, but also as a soloist. The focus of my thesis is to position the tuba as a core element within the jazz model, demonstrated in compositional writing and performance. The compositions will be exhibited through an audio recording, music scores, and via literary and oral dissertation to further acquaint the jury and public with my writing, and in specific what I provide as an individualistic, improvisational tuba player. These compositions are being created to not only demonstrate my strengths and sensibilities as a composer, but will also better illuminate my approach to tuba, demonstrating it as a valid and definitive voice for jazz. My composition portfolio will include pieces for jazz duo, trio, quartet and quintet with varied instrumentation. These compositions reside within the traditional jazz approach and standard 'song' forms, but will employ various compositional techniques accrued either through my studies at York or beyond. There will be improvisation and experimentation, but most compositions will not be overly expansive with improvisation. The goal of these compositions and my thesis is to posit the tuba as a legitimate voice as a bass instrument in jazz. This instrument has been marginalized since its earliest role in the cannon of jazz writing and arranging. The tuba, bass saxophone and similar bass instruments quickly faded into obscurity once acoustic bass became the de facto rhythm section standard on stage and in the studio. I aim to shed light on a forgotten forefather of jazz, and bring it back to the forefront of this musical genre through my own compositions and arrangements

An analysis of the development of selected areas of the legal status of Virginia division superintendents 1869-1970

The purpose of this study was to investigate the development of legal authority of Virginia division superintendents based upon State Constitutions and statutes between the years of 1869 and 1970. Four specific areas chosen to be investigated because of their importance were, respectively, certified personnel, finance, buildings, and policy formulation and execution.;Because of recent increases in public school expectations and seemingly parallel increases in the importance and complexity of the office of division superintendent, it was speculated that there would be a corresponding increase in the superintendent\u27s legal authority. The hypotheses stated that between 1869 and 1970 there would be an increase in the Virginia division superintendent\u27s legal authority in the areas of certificated personnel, finance, buildings, and policy formulation and execution. Furthermore, it was hypothesized that increases would be as a result of mandatory Acts of the Virginia Assembly.;Appropriate State Constitutions, Acts of the Virginia General Assembly, and Codes of Virginia were cross referenced, examined, and analyzed to determine fluctuations of the legal authority of division superintendents.;This study found that there has been no overall increase in the legal authority of Virginia division superintendents in the respective areas of certificated personnel, finance, buildings, and policy formulation and execution between 1869 and 1970. This suggests that recent growth in the division superintendent\u27s legal authority must have come from other sources.;Further study of a similar nature is suggested in other areas such as curriculum and pupil personnel. Other states also need to be examined to determine national perspective. Finally, this study might by replicated from 1970 to the present to help determine the current status and direction

The Relationship of Software System Flexibility to Software System and Team Performance

Organizations are evolving at an ever-increasing rate due to economic changes, globalization, and technology enabled changes such as e-business. These changes require existing and new software systems to be flexible enough to support rapid change while still being reliable and cost effective. Software flexibility has previously been studied only from a structural perspective with little attention to the people and processes that support the software, especially in the maintenance environment where most changes occur. This research builds on a previously validated technology flexibility model with two dimensions: structural and process flexibility (Nelson and Ghods 1998). We empirically test the relationship of flexibility to the performance of the software system and the IS support team. The relationships between flexibility and performance are analyzed using a ìfitî analysis to fully understand the complexity of the relationships. Our findings indicate that software flexibility is related to both system and team performance, and is characterized by the amount of interaction, or ìfit,î between structural and process flexibility

Immune modulation in the treatment of respiratory infection

    Get PDF
The limitations of currently available treatment for severe respiratory infection are demonstrated by the relatively fixed mortality associated with these infections despite advances in nutrition, vaccines, antibiotics, and critical care. This might be due in part to the changing spectrum of pathogens and development of drug resistance. Cytokines are potent molecules that function as growth factors and orchestrate both innate and adaptive immune responses. Several of these factors have entered the clinical arena to support or augment the immune response. Moreover, the use of cytokines has recently been expanded to patients without an overtly defective immune system but who have either significant infection or infection with drug resistant organisms. The use of cytokines as adjuvants in the treatment of respiratory infections is reviewed

    The functions of herpesvirus-encoded microRNAs

Bioinformatic and direct cloning approaches have led to the identification of over 100 novel miRNAs expressed in DNA viruses, although the function of the majority of these small regulatory RNA molecules is unclear. Recently, a number of reports have now identified potential targets of viral miRNAs, including cellular and viral genes as well as an ortholog of an important immune-regulatory cellular miRNA. In this review, we will cover the identification and characterization of miRNAs expressed in the herpesvirus family and discuss the potential significance of their role in viral infection
