    Gasser-Leutwyler coefficients: A progress report

    Last year, we reported our first results on the determination of Gasser-Leutwyler coefficients using partially quenched lattice QCD with three flavors of dynamical staggered quarks. We give an update on our progress in determining two of these coefficients, including an exhaustive effort to estimate all sources of systematic error. At this conference, we have heard about algorithmic techniques to reduce staggered flavor symmetry breaking and a method to incorporate staggered flavor breaking into the partially quenched chiral Lagrangian.     Is strong CP invariance due to a massless up quark?

    A standing mystery in the Standard Model is the unnatural smallness of the strong CP violating phase. A massless up quark has long been proposed as one potential solution. A lattice calculation of the constants of the chiral Lagrangian essential for the determination of the up quark mass, 2 alpha_8 - alpha_5, is presented. We find 2 alpha_8 - alpha_5 = 0.29 +/- 0.18, which corresponds to m_u / m_d = 0.410 +/- 0.036.     GaSb on GaAs interfacial misfit solar cells

    The GaAs/GaSb interface misfit design can achieve comparable efficiency to conventional inverted metamorphic multijunction cells at up to 30% cost reduction. In this pre-liminary work, GaSb single junctions were grown via molecular beam epitaxy on both GaSb and GaAs substrates to compare and fine tune the interfacial misfit growth process. Current vs voltage results show that the best homo-epitaxial cell achieved 5.2% under 35-sun concentration. TEM did not reveal any threading dislocations in the hetero-epitaxial cells, however, device results indicated higher non-radiative recombination than expected, likely due to unpassivated surface states. Improvements to cell processing will be explored and more characterization is planned to determine the cause of degraded hetero-epitaxial cell performance

    STIS Echelle Observations of the Seyfert Galaxy NGC 4151: Physical Conditions in the Ultraviolet Absorbers

    We have examined the physical conditions in intrinsic UV-absorbing gas in the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151, using echelle spectra obtained with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS). We confirm the presence of the kinematic components detected in earlier GHRS observations as well as a new broad absorption feature at a radial velocity of -1680 km/s. The UV continuum of NGC 4151 decreased by a factor of 4 over the previous two years, and we argue the changes in the column density of the low ionization absorption lines associated with the broad component at -490 km/s reflect the decrease in the ionizing flux. Most of the strong absorption lines (e.g., N V, C IV, Si IV) from this component are saturated, but show substantial residual flux in their cores, indicating that the absorber does not fully cover the source of emission. Our interpretation is that the unocculted light is due to scattering by free electrons from an extended region, which reflects continuum, emission lines, and absorption lines. We have been able to constrain the densities for the kinematic components based on absorption lines from metastable states of C III and Fe II, and/or the ratios of ground and fine structure lines of O I,C II, and Si II. We have generated a set of photoionization models which match the ionic column densities for each component during the present low flux state and those seen in previous high flux states with the GHRS and STIS, confirming that the absorbers are photoionized and respond to the changes in the continuum flux. We have been able to map the relative radial positions of the absorbers, and find that the gas decreases in density with distance.     On The Reddening in X-ray Absorbed Seyfert 1 Galaxies

    There are several Seyfert galaxies for which there is a discrepancy between the small column of neutral hydrogen deduced from X-ray observations and the much greater column derived from the reddening of the optical/UV emission lines and continuum. The standard paradigm has the dust within the highly ionized gas which produces O~VII and O~VIII absorption edges (i.e., a ``dusty warm absorber''). We present an alternative model in which the dust exists in a component of gas in which hydrogen has been stripped, but which is at too low an ionization state to possess significant columns of O~VII and O~VIII (i.e, a ``lukewarm absorber''). The lukewarm absorber is at sufficient radial distance to encompass much of the narrow emission-line region, and thus accounts for the narrow-line reddening, unlike the dusty warm absorber. We test the model by using a combination of photoionization models and absorption edge fits to analyze the combined ROSAT/ASCA dataset for the Seyfert 1.5 galaxy, NGC 3227. We show that the data are well fit by a combination of the lukewarm absorber and a more highly ionized component similar to that suggested in earlier studies. We predict that the lukewarm absorber will produce strong UV absorption lines of N V, C IV, Si IV and Mg II.     Mott Transition vs Multicritical Phenomenon of Superconductivity and Antiferromagnetism -- Application to Îş\kappa-(BEDT-TTF)2_2X --

    Interplay between the Mott transition and the multicritical phenomenon of d-wave superconductivity (SC) and antiferromagnetism (AF) is studied theoretically. We describe the Mott transition, which is analogous to a liquid-gas phase transition, in terms of an Ising-type order parameter η\eta. We reveal possible mean-field phase diagrams produced by this interplay. Renormalization group analysis up to one-loop order gives flows of coupling constants, which in most cases lead to fluctuation-induced first-order phase transitions even when the SO(5) symmetry exists betwen the SC and AF. Behaviors of various physical quantities around the Mott critical point are predicted.     Traumatic Brain Injury Causes Endothelial Dysfunction in the Systemic Microcirculation through Arginase-1-Dependent Uncoupling of Endothelial Nitric Oxide Synthase

    Endothelial dysfunction is a hallmark of many chronic diseases, including diabetes and long-term hypertension. We show that acute traumatic brain injury (TBI) leads to endothelial dysfunction in rat mesenteric arteries. Endothelial-dependent dilation was greatly diminished 24 h after TBI because of impaired nitric oxide (NO) production. The activity of arginase, which competes with endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) for the common substrate l-arginine, were also significantly increased in arteries, suggesting that arginase-mediated depletion of l-arginine underlies diminished NO production. Consistent with this, substrate restoration by exogenous application of l-arginine or inhibition of arginase recovered endothelial function. Moreover, evidence for increased reactive oxygen species production, a consequence of l-arginine starvation-dependent eNOS uncoupling, was detected in endothelium and plasma. Collectively, our findings demonstrate endothelial dysfunction in a remote vascular bed after TBI, manifesting as impaired endothelial-dependent vasodilation, with increased arginase activity, decreased generation of NO, and increased O(2)(-) production. We conclude that blood vessels have a “molecular memory” of neurotrauma, 24 h after injury, because of functional changes in vascular endothelial cells; these effects are pertinent to understanding the systemic inflammatory response that occurs after TBI even in the absence of polytrauma

    Structure of the Accretion Flow in Broad-Line Radio Galaxies: The Case of 3C390.3

    We present XMM and Suzaku observations of the Broad-Line Radio Galaxy (BLRG) 3C390.3. The Fe Ka line has a width FWHM ~ 8,800 km/s, consistent within a factor two with the width of the double-peaked H_alpha line, suggesting an origin from the Broad Line Region. The data show for the first time a weak, broad bump extending from 5 to 7 keV. When fitted with a Gaussian, its centroid energy is 6.6 keV in the source's rest-frame with FWHM of 43,000 km/s and EW of 50 eV; its most likely interpretation is emission from He-like Fe (Fe XXV), suggesting the presence of an ionized medium in the inner regions of 3C390.3. The broad-band 0.5-100 keV continuum is well described by a single power law with photon index Gamma=1.6 and cutoff energy 157 keV, plus cold reflection with strength R=0.5. In addition, ionized reflection is required to account for the 6.6 keV bump in the broad-band continuum, yielding an ionization parameter xi ~ 2700 ergs cm s^-1; the inner radius of the ionized reflector is constrained to be larger than 20 r_G, although this result depends on the assumed emissivity profile of the disk. If true, we argue that the lack of broad Fe K emission from within 20 r_G indicates that the innermost regions of the disk in 3C390.3 are obscured and/or poorly illuminated. While the SED of 3C390.3 is generally dominated by accretion-related continuum, during accretion low states the jet can significantly contribute in the optical to X-ray bands via synchrotron self-Compton emission.     A randomised trial of subcutaneous intermittent interleukin-2 without antiretroviral therapy in HIV-infected patients: the UK-Vanguard Study

    Objective: The objective of the trial was to evaluate in a pilot setting the safety and efficacy of interleukin-2 (IL-2) therapy when used without concomitant antiretroviral therapy as a treatment for HIV infection. Design and Setting: This was a multicentre randomised three-arm trial conducted between September 1998 and March 2001 at three clinical centres in the United Kingdom. Participants: Participants were 36 antiretroviral treatment naive HIV-1-infected patients with baseline CD4 T lymphocyte counts of at least 350 cells/mm(3). Interventions: Participants were randomly assigned to receive IL-2 at 15 million international units (MIU) per day ( 12 participants) or 9 MIU/day ( 12 participants) or no treatment ( 12 participants). IL-2 was administered by twice-daily subcutaneous injections for five consecutive days every 8 wk. Outcome Measures: Primary outcome was the change from baseline CD4 T lymphocyte count at 24 wk. Safety and plasma HIV RNA levels were also monitored every 4 wk through 24 wk. The two IL-2 dose groups were combined for the primary analysis. Results: Area under curve (AUC) for change in the mean CD4 T lymphocyte count through 24 wk was 129 cells/mm(3) for those assigned IL-2 ( both dose groups combined) and 13 cells/mm(3) for control participants (95% CI for difference, 51.3 - 181.2 cells/mm(3); p = 0.0009). Compared to the control group, significant increases in CD4 cell count were observed for both IL-2 dose groups: 104.2/mm(3) ( p = 0.008) and 128.4 cells/mm(3) ( p = 0.002) for the 4.5 and 7.5 MIU dose groups, respectively. There were no significant differences between the IL-2 (0.13 log(10) copies/ ml) and control (0.09 log(10) copies/ml) groups for AUC of change in plasma HIV RNA over the 24-wk period of follow- up ( 95% CI for difference, - 0.17 to 0.26; p = 0.70). Grade 4 and dose-limiting side effects were in keeping with those previously reported for IL-2 therapy. Conclusions: In participants with HIV infection and baseline CD4 T lymphocyte counts of at least 350 cells/mm(3), intermittent subcutaneous IL-2 without concomitant antiretroviral therapy was well tolerated and produced significant increases in CD4 T lymphocyte counts and did not adversely affect plasma HIV RNA levels
