Youth unemployment, firm size and reservation wages in South Africa
Youth unemployment in South Africa is high. We investigate whether one of the reasons may be that the wages young people want or need are above those that they could reasonably expect to earn given their characteristics. Unlike previous work on the relationship between reservation wages and unemployment we differentiate between wages in different sizes of firms. Larger firms pay more and thus, even if reservation wages are similar to average predicted wages they may be above wages that young people could expect to earn in smaller firms. The role of clinician emotion in clinical reasoning: balancing the analytical process
IntroductionThis review paper identifies and describes the role of clinicians' memory, emotions and physical responses in clinical reasoning processes. Clinical reasoning is complex and multi-factorial and key models of clinical reasoning within musculoskeletal physiotherapy are discussed, highlighting the omission of emotion and subsequent physical responses and how these can impact upon a clinician when making a decision.DiscussionIt is proposed that clinicians should consider the emotions associated with decision-making, especially when there is concern surrounding a presentation. Reflecting on practice in the clinical environment and subsequently applying this to a patient presentation should involve some acknowledgement of clinicians' physical responses, emotions and how they may play a part in any decision made. Presenting intuition and gut-feeling as separate reasoning methods and how these processes co-exist with other more accepted reasoning such as hypothetico-deductive is also discussed.ConclusionMusculoskeletal physiotherapy should consider the elements of feelings, emotions and physical responses when applying reflective practice principles. Furthermore, clinicians dealing with difficult and challenging presentations should look at the emotional as well as the analytical experience when justifying decisions and learning from practice
Revisiting the Jurassic Geomagnetic Reversal recorded in the Lesotho Basalt (Southern Africa)
We carried out a detailed and continuous paleomagnetic sampling of the
reversed to normal geomagnetic transition recorded by some 60 consecutive flow
units near the base of the Lesotho Basalt (183  1 Ma). After
alternating field or thermal cleaning the directions of remanence are generally
well clustered within flow units. In contrast, the thermal instability of the
samples did not allow to obtain reliable paleointensity determinations. The
geomagnetic transition is incompletely recorded due to a gap in volcanic
activity attested both by eolian deposits and a large angular distance between
the field directions of the flows underlying or overlying these deposits. The
transition path is noticeably different from that reported in the pioneer work
of van Zijl et al. (1962). The most transitional Virtual Geomagnetic Poles are
observed after the volcanic hiatus. Once continents are replaced in their
relative position 180 Ma ago, the post-hiatus VGP cluster over Russia. However,
two successive rebounds from that cluster are found, with VGP reaching
repeatedly Eastern Asia coast. Thus, the VGP path is not narrowly constrained
in paleolongitude. The decrease in intensity of magnetization as the field
deviates from the normal or reversed direction suggests that the decrease in
field magnitude during the reversal reached 80-90%. We conclude that although
the reversal is of a dipole of much weaker moment than that which existed on
average during Cenozoic time, the characteristics of the reversing geodynamo

The success of learnerships? Lessons from South Africa's training and education programme
Vocational training programmes, like South Africa's learnership programme, which combine classroom learning and on-the-job training seem like the type of intervention which can create skills, get young people into jobs quicker, and reduce youth unemployment. This paper uses a longitudinal dataset of young people over four years - some of whom participate in the learnership programme - and firm level data to assess whether the programme meets its objectives, and based on this draws lessons for similar programmes in other countries. The results are disappointing: young people completing learnerships are more likely to be employed but this fades quickly; they do not get better jobs; and the way the programme is funded, as well as the nature of the firms which undertake subsidized training, means that the programme redistributes resources from smaller to larger firms and from more labour-intensive firms to less
Internet-based guided self-help for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD): randomised controlled trial
Background: There are numerous barriers that limit access to evidence-based treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Internet-based guided self-help is a treatment option that may help widen access to effective intervention, but the approach has not been sufficiently explored for the treatment of PTSD. Methods: 42 adults with DSM-5 PTSD of mild to moderate severity were randomly allocated to internet-based self-help with up to 3 hours of therapist assistance, or to a delayed treatment control group. The internet-based programme included 8 modules that focused on psycho-education; grounding; relaxation; behavioural activation; real-life and imaginal exposure; cognitive therapy and relapse prevention. The primary outcome measure was reduction in clinician-rated traumatic stress symptoms using the clinician administered PTSD scale for DSM-V (CAPS-5). Secondary outcomes were self-reported PTSD symptoms; depression; anxiety; alcohol use; perceived social support; and functional impairment. Results: Post-treatment, the internet-based guided self-help group had significantly lower clinician assessed PTSD symptoms than the delayed treatment control group (between-group effect size Cohen’s d=1.86). The difference was maintained at one-month follow-up and dissipated once both groups had received treatment. Similar patterns of difference between the two groups were found for depression, anxiety and functional impairment. The average contact with treating clinicians was 2½ hours. Conclusions: Internet-based trauma-focused guided self-help for PTSD is a promising treatment option that requires far less therapist time than current first line face-to-face psychological therapy
SPEAR-1: An experiment to measure current collection in the ionosphere by high voltage biased conductors
An experiment is described in which a high electrical potential difference, up to 45 kV, was applied between deployed conducting spheres and a sounding rocket in the ionosphere. Measurements were made of the applied voltage and the resulting currents for each of 24 applications of different high potentials. In addition, diagnostic measurements of optical emissions in the vicinity of the spheres, energetic particle flow to the sounding rocket, dc electric field and wave data were made. The ambient plasma and neutral environments were measured by a Langmuir probe and a cold cathode neutral ionization gauge, respectively. The payload is described and examples of the measured current and voltage characteristics are presented. The characteristics of the measured currents are discussed in terms of the diagnostic measurements and the in-situ measurements of the vehicle environment. In general, it was found that the currents observed were at a level typical of magnetically limited currents from the ionospheric plasma for potentials less than 12 kV, and slightly higher for larger potentials. However, due to the failure to expose the plasma contactor, the vehicle sheath modified the sphere sheaths and made comparisons with the analytic models of Langmuir-Blodgett and Parker-Murphy less meaningful. Examples of localized enhancements of ambient gas density resulting from the operation of the attitude control system thrusters (cold nitrogen) were obtained.
