    Cultural models of intimate life in contemporary urban Mexico: a review of self-help texts.

    This paper examines cultural representations of intimacy and social change in four Mexican self-help books. They portray in an emblematic manner current cultural debates and tensions in Mexican society regarding the social organisation of couple relationships and sexuality. Their narratives are characterised by an ambiguous position between the assertion of patriarchal cultural models and the acknowledgement of trends towards alternative, egalitarian and love-based relationship forms. I use the analysis of these texts to bring to the fore central patterns, tensions, and conflicts that are characteristic of the cultural dynamics of gender relations and intimate life in contemporary Mexico

    ON THE MULTI-PREFERENCE APPROACH TO EVALUATING OPPORTUNITIES

    The purpose of the paper is to provide a general framework for analyzing ""preference for opportunities."" Based on two simple axioms a fundamental result due to Kreps is used in order to represent rankings of opportunity sets in terms of multiple preferences. The paper provides several refinements of the basic representation theorem. In particular, a condition of ""closedness under compromise"" is suggested in order to distinguish the flexibility interpretation of the model from normative interpretations which play a crucial role in justifying the intrinsic value of opportunities. Moreover, the paper clarifies the link between the multiple preference approach and the ""choice function"" approach to evaluating opportunities. In particular, it is shown how the well-known Aizerman/Malishevski result on rationalizability of choice functions can be obtained as a corollary from the more general multiple preference representation of a ranking of opportunity sets.

    Online child sexual abuse by female offenders: an exploratory study

    The expansion of the Internet and the proliferation of information technologies have created new opportunities for the sexual abuse of children. Sex offenders use the Internet to access and distribute indecent images of children and to select victims to groom for the purpose of abuse (Davidson & Gottschalk 2010; Martellozzo, 2010; Martellozzo & Taylor, 2009; Quayle, Erooga, Wright, Taylor, & Harbinson, 2006). It is a commonly held assumption, stated implicitly or explicitly in both public debates and scholarly research, that child sexual abuse is a typically male crime, in so far as offenders are generally held to be men and the level of sexual aggression involved in their offences is seen as closely related to masculine behaviour. This article aims to increase knowledge and understanding of the problem of online child sexual abuse by female offenders. As rehearsed in the literature (Martellozzo, 2011; Webster, Davidson, Bifulco, Pham, & Caretti, 2009), online child sexual abuse is predominantly a crime committed by men and only a small percentage of females sexually abuse children through the Internet.     Profits, Costs, and the Changing Structure of Dairy Farming

    U.S. dairy production is consolidating into fewer but larger farms. This report uses data from several USDA surveys to detail that consolidation and to analyze the financial drivers of consolidation. Specifically, larger farms realize lower production costs. Although small dairy farms realize higher revenue per hundredweight of milk sold, the cost advantages of larger size allow large farms to be profitable, on average, even while most small farms are unable to earn enough to replace their capital.     This article examines recent changes in British family migration policy. It explore the reasons for these policy changes. It highlights that these changes have affected the legal, financial, social and lived experiences of transnational couples. It uses primary research to exemplify these changes, For example, it highlights that the changes in policy has had some negative impacts on the ability of transnational families to have intimate relationships with each other. Some of these changes have led to the separation of couples. Other changes have led to what couples outline as an involuntary separation from the UK. This research has current and future relevance in the context of the focus of the current government, and the likelihood that policy will be tightened even further in the aftermath of Britain leaving the EU, post-Brexit

    External and intrinsic anchoring in nematic liquid crystals: A Monte Carlo study

    We present a Monte Carlo study of external surface anchoring in nematic cells with partially disordered solid substrates, as well as of intrinsic anchoring at free nematic interfaces. The simulations are based on the simple hexagonal lattice model with a spatially anisotropic intermolecular potential. We estimate the corresponding extrapolation length bb by imposing an elastic deformation in a hybrid cell-like nematic sample. Our estimates for bb increase with increasing surface disorder and are essentially temperature--independent. Experimental values of bb are approached only when both the coupling of nematic molecules with the substrate and the anisotropy of nematic--nematic interactions are weak.Comment: Revisions primarily in section I

    Human Dermal Microvascular Endothelial Cells Produce Matrix Metalloproteinases in Response to Angiogenic Factors and Migration

    Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a family of inducible enzymes that degrade extracellular matrix components, allowing cells to traverse connective tissue structures efficiently. Specific tissue inhibitors (TIMPs) function as physiologic inhibitors of MMP activity. Because neovascularization may require various proteinases, we characterized the profile of metalloenzyme production by microvascular endothelial cells (MEC) and the modulation of expression by phorbol esters (PMA) and by the physiologically relevant cytokines tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), basic fibroblast growth factor, and interferon-γ. MMP expression by MEC and large-vessel human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, immunoprecipitation, Northern hybridization, and transfection assays. Constitutive expression of MMPs by endothelial cells was low. PMA stimulated the production of collagenase, stromelysin, 92-kDa gelatinase, and TIMP-1 in both endothelial cell types. TIMP-2 was constitutively expressed by MEC and HUVEC, but was down-regulated by PMA. TNF-α induced an endothelial-cell-specific up-regulation of collagenase with a concomitant inhibition of PMA-induced TIMP-1 up-regulation, a response that is distinct from that of fibroblasts. Interferon-γ up-regulated TIMP-1 production by MEC and blocked PMA and TNT-induced up-regulation of collagenase. Northern hybridization assays showed pretranslational control of PMA-, basic fibroblast growth factor-, and TNF-α–induced MM.P expression. Collagenase-promoter CAT constructs containing 2.28 kb of the 5' region of the collagenase gene demonstrated transcriptional regulation. The potential physiologic relevance of such regulation was shown in an in vitro migration assay. MEC were stimulated to migrate by wounding and exposure to TNF-α. Collagenase mRNA was prominently expressed by the migrating cells, as shown by in situ hybridization. In sum, MEC have a unique profile of MMP expression and regulation compared with other cell types, which may be important for wound healing and angiogenesis, particularly during the early phase of migration
