Electromagnetic wave refraction at an interface of a double wire medium
Plane-wave reflection and refraction at an interface with a double wire
medium is considered. The problem of additional boundary conditions (ABC) in
application to wire media is discussed and an ABC-free approach, known in the
solid state physics, is used. Expressions for the fields and Poynting vectors
of the refracted waves are derived. Directions and values of the power density
flow of the refracted waves are found and the conservation of the power flow
through the interface is checked. The difference between the results, given by
the conventional model of wire media and the model, properly taking into
account spatial dispersion, is discussed.Comment: 17 pages, 11 figure
Measurement of air and nitrogen fluorescence light yields induced by electron beam for UHECR experiments
Most of the Ultra High Energy Cosmic Ray (UHECR) experiments and projects
(HiRes, AUGER, TA, EUSO, TUS,...) use air fluorescence to detect and measure
extensive air showers (EAS). The precise knowledge of the Fluorescence Light
Yield (FLY) is of paramount importance for the reconstruction of UHECR. The
MACFLY - Measurement of Air Cherenkov and Fluorescence Light Yield - experiment
has been designed to perform such FLY measurements. In this paper we will
present the results of FLY in the 290-440 nm wavelength range for dry air and
pure nitrogen, both excited by electrons with energy of 1.5 MeV, 20 GeV and 50
GeV. The experiment uses a 90Sr radioactive source for low energy measurement
and a CERN SPS electron beam for high energy. We find that the FLY is
proportional to the deposited energy (E_d) in the gas and we show that the air
fluorescence properties remain constant independently of the electron energy.
At the reference point: atmospheric dry air at 1013 hPa and 23C, the ratio
FLY/E_d=17.6 photon/MeV with a systematic error of 13.2%.Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures. Accepted for publication in Astroparticle

Modeling of radiative - conductive heat transfer in compositing materials
A layer of composite material is investigated, which is heated one-sidedly with one-dimensional energy transfer accounting for thermal conductivity and radiation. A mathematical model is suggested for non-stationary coefficient thermophysical problem under radiative-conductive heat transfer in a material layer. Temperature dependencies of thermal capacity and thermal conductivity coefficient of composite radio-transparent material have been determined through numerical modeling by solving the coefficient reverse problem of thermal conductivity
Effects of dimephosphone on skin survival in conditions of reduced blood circulation
The search for and creation of drugs with dermatoprotective and metabotropic activity is one of the priorities of modern diabetology. Synthetic organophosphorus compounds with no anticholinesterase activity, to which dimephosphone belongs to, deserve great attention in this respec
Long-range attraction between particles in dusty plasma and partial surface tension of dusty phase boundary
Effective potential of a charged dusty particle moving in homogeneous plasma
has a negative part that provides attraction between similarly charged dusty
particles. A depth of this potential well is great enough to ensure both
stability of crystal structure of dusty plasma and sizable value of surface
tension of a boundary surface of dusty region. The latter depends on the
orientation of the surface relative to the counter-ion flow, namely, it is
maximal and positive for the surface normal to the flow and minimal and
negative for the surface along the flow. For the most cases of dusty plasma in
a gas discharge, a value of the first of them is more than sufficient to ensure
stability of lenticular dusty phase void oriented across the counter-ion flow.Comment: LATEX, REVTEX4, 7 pages, 6 figure
Glory Oscillations in the Index of Refraction for Matter-Waves
We have measured the index of refraction for sodium de Broglie waves in gases
of Ar, Kr, Xe, and nitrogen over a wide range of sodium velocities. We observe
glory oscillations -- a velocity-dependent oscillation in the forward
scattering amplitude. An atom interferometer was used to observe glory
oscillations in the phase shift caused by the collision, which are larger than
glory oscillations observed in the cross section. The glory oscillations depend
sensitively on the shape of the interatomic potential, allowing us to
discriminate among various predictions for these potentials, none of which
completely agrees with our measurements
Measurement of trapped proton fluences in main stack of P0006 experiment
We have measured directional distribution and Eastward directed mission fluence of trapped protons at two different energies with plastic nuclear track detectors (CR-39 with DOP) in the main stack of the P0006 experiment on LDEF. Results show arriving directions of trapped protons have very high anisotropy with most protons arriving from the West direction. Selecting these particles we have determined the mission fluence of Eastward directed trapped protons. We found experimental fluences are slightly higher than results of the model calculations of Armstrong and Colborn
