    Effects due to a scalar coupling on the particle-antiparticle production in the Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau theory

    The Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau formalism with vector and scalar potentials is used to point out a few misconceptions diffused in the literature. It is explicitly shown that the scalar coupling makes the DKP formalism not equivalent to the Klein-Gordon formalism or to the Proca formalism, and that the spin-1 sector of the DKP theory looks formally like the spin-0 sector. With proper boundary conditions, scattering of massive bosons in an arbitrary mixed vector-scalar square step potential is explored in a simple way and effects due to the scalar coupling on the particle-antiparticle production and localization of bosons are analyzed in some detail

    Activity standardisation of 177Lu.

    <sup>177</sup> Lu decays through low-energy β <sup>-</sup> - and γ-emissions in addition to conversion and Auger electrons. To support the use of this radiopharmaceutical in Switzerland, a <sup>177</sup> Lu solution was standardised using the β-γ coincidence technique, as well as the TDCR method. The solution had no <sup>177m</sup> Lu impurity. Primary coincidence measurements, with plastic scintillators for beta detection, were carried out using both analogue and digital electronics. TDCR measurements using only defocusing were also made. Monte Carlo calculations were used to compute the detection efficiency. The coincidence measurements with both analogue and digital electronics are compatible within one standard uncertainty, but they are lower than (and discrepant with) the TDCR measurements. An ampoule of this solution was submitted to the BIPM as a contribution to the Système International de Référence

    An effective singular oscillator for Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau particles with a nonminimal vector coupling: a two-fold degeneracy

    Scalar and vector bosons in the background of one-dimensional nonminimal vector linear plus inversely linear potentials are explored in a unified way in the context of the Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau theory. The problem is mapped into a Sturm-Liouville problem with an effective singular oscillator. With boundary conditions emerging from the problem, exact bound-state solutions in the spin-0 sector are found in closed form and it is shown that the spectrum exhibits degeneracy. It is shown that, depending on the potential parameters, there may or may not exist bound-state solutions in the spin-1 sector.Comment: 1 figure. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1009.159

    Radiation exposure in dental radiology: a 1998 nationwide survey in Switzerland

    OBJECTIVES: To measure the frequencies of dental radiological examinations in Switzerland and to determine the associated collective radiation doses. METHODS: To evaluate the frequencies, a sample of 376 dental practitioners and other institutions performing dental radiology were requested to fill in questionnaires designed to measure, amongst others, frequencies of dental radiodiagnoses according to type of examination, patient age and gender, dental specialty and type of surgery. The associated collective radiation doses were determined by multiplying the relevant frequencies with dose estimates obtained from recent measurements and calculations. RESULTS: The total number of dental examinations performed in Switzerland in 1998 was 4.1 million (581 per 1000 population). Periapical, bitewing and panoramic radiographs were the most frequent types of dental examinations. The collective dose associated with dental radiology was 71 person.Sv. This amounts to an annual average effective dose to the population of 10 muSv per caput, which is in agreement with the figures reported for countries of similar healthcare level. Various features such as the age distribution of the radiographed patients, the forms of collimators used, film consumption and the use of digital imaging systems are presented. CONCLUSIONS: Several recommendations for dose reduction are made. These include the re-evaluation of the patterns and justification for prescribing some particular types of dental examinations as well as the avoidance of unnecessary irradiation by the use of rectangular collimation and high sensitivity F-speed films. Personality in career counseling contexts should no longer be considered as vocational personality associated with personality interests but, rather, as a set of dispositions that has an impact on several vocational and career-related outcomes, such as work engagement, work satisfaction, job performance, etc. Although the relationship between personality and the vocational and career related outcomes is not direct, it might certainly be mediated by several regulatory processes, such as work adaptability, and moderated by contextual and environmental factors. Personality assessment initiates an individual's self-regulatory process and contributes to the overall effectiveness of career interventions when feedback is individualized and stimulates a deconstruction, reconstruction, and co-construction of the vocational or multiple self-concept. Personality assessments can also promote the reconstruction of a self-concept more aligned with the perception of the environment about the personality of the counselee, strengthening the reality principle allowing more rational and controlled choices. In addition, some specific personality profiles, such as having high levels of neuroticism and low levels of conscientiousness, can be considered as risk factors frequently leading to career decision-making difficulties. Moreover, people with low conscientiousness benefit less from career interventions, so special attention should be devoted to counselees having that characteristic.     Exact Solutions of the Duffin Kemmer Petiau Equation for the Deformed Hulthen Potential

    Using the Nikiforov Uvarov method, an application of the relativistic Duffin Kemmer Petiau equation in the presence of a deformed Hulthen potential is presented for spin zero particles. We derived the first order coupled differential radial equations which enable the energy eigenvalues as well as the full wavefunctions to be evaluated by using of the Nikiforov Uvarov method that can be written in terms of the hypergeometric polynomials.Comment: 8 pages. submitted to Physica Script

    Activity standardisation of <sup>32</sup>Si at IRA-METAS.

    This work explores the primary activity standardisation of &lt;sup&gt;32&lt;/sup&gt; Si as part of the SINCHRON project that aims at filling the geochronological dating gap by making a new precise measurement of the half-life of this nuclide. The stability of some of the radioactive test solutions, providing &lt;sup&gt;32&lt;/sup&gt; Si as hexafluorosilicic acid (H &lt;sub&gt;2&lt;/sub&gt; &lt;sup&gt;32&lt;/sup&gt; SiF &lt;sub&gt;6&lt;/sub&gt; ), was monitored over long periods, pointing to the adequate sample composition and vial type to ensure stability. These solutions were standardised using liquid scintillation counting with the triple to double coincidence ratio (TDCR) technique and the CIEMAT-NIST efficiency tracing (CNET) method. Complementary backup measurements, using 4πβ-γ coincidence counting with &lt;sup&gt;60&lt;/sup&gt; Co as a tracer, were performed with both liquid and plastic scintillation for beta detection. While &lt;sup&gt;60&lt;/sup&gt; Co coincidence tracing with a liquid scintillator predicted activities in agreement with the TDCR and CNET determinations, using plastic scintillation turned out to be unfeasible as the addition of lanthanum nitrate and ammonia to fix the silicon during the drying process generated large crystals that compromised the linearity of the efficiency function

    Approximate solution of the Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau equation for a vector Yukawa potential with arbitrary total angular momenta

    The usual approximation scheme is used to study the solution of the Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau (DKP) equation for a vector Yukawa potential in the framework of the parametric Nikiforov-Uvarov (NU) method. The approximate energy eigenvalue equation and the corresponding wave function spinor components are calculated for arbitrary total angular momentum in closed form. Further, the approximate energy equation and wave function spinor components are also given for case.
