Internet of Things in Agricultural Innovation and Security
The agricultural Internet of Things (Ag-IoT) paradigm has tremendous potential in transparent integration of underground soil sensing, farm machinery, and sensor-guided irrigation systems with the complex social network of growers, agronomists, crop consultants, and advisors. The aim of the IoT in agricultural innovation and security chapter is to present agricultural IoT research and paradigm to promote sustainable production of safe, healthy, and profitable crop and animal agricultural products. This chapter covers the IoT platform to test optimized management strategies, engage farmer and industry groups, and investigate new and traditional technology drivers that will enhance resilience of the farmers to the socio-environmental changes. A review of state-of-the-art communication architectures and underlying sensing technologies and communication mechanisms is presented with coverage of recent advances in the theory and applications of wireless underground communications. Major challenges in Ag-IoT design and implementation are also discussed
Morphological and immunocytochemical characterization of feline odontoclastic resorptive lesions
Objective: Feline odontoclastic resorptive lesions (FORL) are common in domestic cats. The disease is painful, and leads to root resorption and replacement by bone, and tooth loss. The cause of this non-curable disease has not been established. The present study focused on the periodontal ligament (PL) in clinically and histologically healthy teeth and in teeth exhibiting various degrees of FORL. Methods: A total of 176 tissue blocks from 29 teeth was available for light and transmission electron microscopy. An antibody against osteopontin (OPN) was used for high-resolution immunocytochemistry, since this protein is involved in bone remodeling, cell adhesion, and inflammation. Results: A partial low cell number and an occasional translucent perivascular zone characterized the PL in healthy looking teeth. In teeth exhibiting small or initial FORL, the perivascular hyalinization was more pronounced, cell number was reduced, and widened channels connected the PL with the alveolar bone. In teeth exhibiting severe forms of FORL, the PL tissue was drastically affected. PL regions with massive tissue destruction were characterized by a lack of both cells and extracellular matrix, while other regions were replaced by bone marrow stroma. OPN labeling was restricted to the PL-facing matrix portions of bone and cementum. Conclusion: PL alterations seem to be a common feature in feline teeth. PL degeneration may initially be associated with vasculitis and appeared to increase with the severity of FORL. Since the PL did not recover and bone marrow stroma occupied the degenerated PL, ankylosis and replacement resorption are regarded as unavoidable sequelae
Benchmarking High Density Image Matching for Oblique Airborne Imagery
Both, improvements in camera technology and new pixel-wise matching approaches triggered the further development of software
tools for image based 3D reconstruction. Meanwhile research groups as well as commercial vendors provide photogrammetric
software to generate dense, reliable and accurate 3D point clouds and Digital Surface Models (DSM) from highly overlapping aerial
images. In order to evaluate the potential of these algorithms in view of the ongoing software developments, a suitable test bed is
provided by the ISPRS/EuroSDR initiative Benchmark on High Density Image Matching for DSM Computation. This paper
discusses the proposed test scenario to investigate the potential of dense matching approaches for 3D data capture from oblique
airborne imagery. For this purpose, an oblique aerial image block captured at a GSD of 6 cm in the west of Zürich by a Leica RCD30
Oblique Penta camera is used. Within this paper, the potential test scenario is demonstrated using matching results from two
software packages, Agisoft PhotoScan and SURE from University of Stuttgart. As oblique images are frequently used for data
capture at building facades, 3D point clouds are mainly investigated at such areas. Reference data from terrestrial laser scanning is
used to evaluate data quality from dense image matching for several facade patches with respect to accuracy, density and reliability

Diagnosis of all types of cutaneous tuberculosis is challenging because the clinical picture of these diseases is highly variable. We describe the case of a 79-year old woman with an atypical presentation of Erythema induraturn Bazin (EIB) on the chest and left arm in association with a tuberculous osteomyelitis of the left olecranon. Surprisingly, M. tuberculosis grew also from biopsies of the EIB-lesions. This contradicts the conventional view that considers EIB (a tuberculid) to be caused by a hypersensitivity reaction to mycobacteria. The presented case supports the hypothesis that EIB may also be caused by hematogenous or lymphatic spread of viable M. tuberculosis
