Paper Session I-A - Space Shuttle, Human Space Transportation for the Next Thirty Years

    Get PDF
NASA’s Integrated Space Transportation Plan (ISTP) is focused on increasing safety and reliability, reducing cost, and meeting NASA’s mission requirements while making maximum use of the aerospace industry capabilities and commercial market leverage. In addition, the ISTP will ensure continued safe access to space through Space Shuttle safety and supportability upgrades until a replacement alternative has been demonstrated. To implement the ISTP, Congress has funded the Space Launch Initiative (SLI). The goal of the SLI is for NASA to meet its future space flight needs, including human access to space, using commercial launch vehicles that reduce cost and improve safety and reliability. The premise of the SLI is that the private sector can define a business environment, including a sufficiently large commercial launch market, to close the business case and justify the corporate investment required by building and operating a commercial replacement for the Shuttle. Significant changes in the launch market have reduced the opportunity to leverage off the commercial market. NASA’s SLI is funding technology maturation projects to drive down the technical risk but the launch market growth projections remain elusive. If the full convergence between government and commercial mission needs can not be achieved and the market analysis and business modeling will not predict business case closure for a commercial RLV development start, a Shuttle Evolved Vehicle (SEV), supported by the ELV fleet, will use the mature technologies from the SLI to ensure that our national launch and spaceflight requirements are met. Boeing is defining an SEV architecture that will maintain the Space Shuttle System viable through 2030; provide safe, reliable, robust transportation to and from earth orbit; and meet the emerging needs of expanded missions and customers

    Air Force construction automation/robotics

    Get PDF
The Air Force has several missions which generate unique requirements that are being met through the development of construction robotic technology. One especially important mission will be the conduct of Department of Defense (DOD) space activities. Space operations and other missions place construction/repair equipment operators in dangerous environments and potentially harmful situations. Additionally, force reductions require that human resources be leveraged to the maximum extent possible, and more stringent construction repair requirements push for increased automation. To solve these problems, the U.S. Air Force is undertaking a research and development effort at Tyndall AFB, FL, to develop robotic construction/repair equipment. This development effort involves the following technologies: teleoperation, telerobotics, construction operations (excavation, grading, leveling, tool change), robotic vehicle communications, vehicle navigation, mission/vehicle task control architecture, and associated computing environment. The ultimate goal is the fielding of a robotic repair capability operating at the level of supervised autonomy. This paper will discuss current and planned efforts in space construction/repair, explosive ordnance disposal, hazardous waste cleanup, and fire fighting

Theater Education Through the Common Core

    Get PDF
As school budgets have plummeted, one of the extra curriculums that has suffered by losing funding has been the theatre department (wheeler 2007). The common core of education focuses on the four subjects of math, science, English, and history. The subjects are traditionally separated from each other with separate specialized teachers. However, several instructors try to utilize various methods in order to teach individual subjects more effectively. Even though the arts as a separate subject have slowly been cut from school programs around the nation, they have become an integral part of many teacher\u27s curriculum to aid students in understanding difficult material. Upon further analysis, the many aspects of theater could be applicable to all of the common core standards. In this project, I plan to design a curriculum that uses aspects of the theater in order to teach all of the common core standards of English as well as math, science, and history. I shall describe specific lesson plans for each subject and their implementation in a classroom environment during a single semester of the school year. The aspects of theater utilized shall be technical theater, including but not limited to sound, costume, stage, and lighting design. Also included will be theater history, play readings of various time periods, dance, and acting styles. After a semester of study using this proposed curriculum, the students will present a final project using the skills learned in the program

The Advantage of STEEP as a Method to Identify Elementary School Children who are At-Risk for Learning Disabilities

The purpose of the current study was to determine the relationship between the Screening to Enhance Equitable Placement (STEEP) and the Dyslexia Screening Instrument (DSI) to deem STEEP a valuable tool for identifying children who may be at risk for a learning disability or dyslexia. The following research question was examined: What is the concurrent validity of STEEP, as a screening instrument for identifying at risk students for learning disabilities by comparing it to the Dyslexia Screening Instrument? In this study, students in first through fourth grade classrooms at a rural Southeastern Ohio elementary school who were administered STEEP and obtained a Mastery/Instructional Math score and a Frustrational Reading score were identified and were administered the DSI. The results of the study indicate that the probability of a consistent score on the DSI and STEEP are zero. Conclusions and recommendations for further research were discussed
