    Identification of tomato inbred lines for heat tolerance through agronomic and physiological approaches

    Eighteen tomato inbred lines were evaluated for tolerance against heat under field condition. Eight inbred lines were found promising in respect to flower and fruit setting. Ten inbred lines did not set fruit due to showing sensitivity to heat. Inbred line C11 produced the maximum number of 20.8 fruits per plant and fruit yield of 581 g per plant. Inbred line C51 produced 553 g fruit per plant. The highest individual fruit weight of 65.7 g was produced by WP10 with only 180 g fruit yield per plant. Three inbred lines, C41, C51 and C71 had more than 5% total soluble solid. Membrane thermostability (MT) test of eighteen inbred lines was accomplished with a view to evaluate heat tolerance under elevated temperature of 55°C. The result of MT test revealed that some of the inbred lines had the longer heat killing time and hence those genotypes were considered as heat tolerant among the collection. Three inbred lines, C51, C71 and HT019 took maximum of 240 minutes to cause 50% injury, which indicated that these inbred lies could be considered as useful breeding materials in developing heat tolerant tomato varieties. Six inbred lines namely C11, C41, HT020, HT021, WP10 and VRT004 also had tolerance against elevated temperature for 210 minutes to cause 50% injury. These nine inbred lines, due to having longer time to cause 50% injury level against elevated temperature, can also be selected for utilization in tomato breeding program to develop heat tolerant varieties

    Incidental diagnosis of diseases on un-enhanced helical computed tomography performed for ureteric colic

    BACKGROUND: Patients presenting in the emergency room with flank pain suggestive of acute ureteric colic may have alternative underlying conditions mimicking ureteric stones. An early diagnosis and appropriate treatment for other causes of flank pain is important. The majority of centers around the world are increasingly using un-enhanced helical CT (UHCT) for evaluation of ureteric colic. This study was conducted to determine the incidence and spectrum of significant incidental diagnoses established or suggested on UHCT performed for suspected renal/ureteric colic. METHODS: Urologist and radiologist reviewed 233 consecutive UHCT, performed for suspected renal/ureteral colic along with assessment of the medical records. Radiological diagnoses of clinical entities not suspected otherwise were analyzed. All other relevant radiological, biochemical and serological investigations and per-operative findings were also noted. RESULTS: Ureteral calculi were identified in 148 examinations (64%), findings of recent passage of calculi in 10 (4%) and no calculus in 75 examinations (32%). Overall the incidental findings (additional or alternative diagnosis) were found in 28 (12%) CT scans. Twenty (71%) of these diagnoses were confirmed by per-operative findings, biopsy, and other radiological and biochemical investigations or on clinical follow up. CONCLUSION: A wide spectrum of significant incidental diagnoses can be identified on UHCT performed for suspected renal/ureteral colic.     Granular cell tumors of the urinary bladder

    BACKGROUND: Granular cell tumors (GCTs) are extremely rare lesions of the urinary bladder with only nine cases being reported in world literature of which one was malignant. Generally believed to be of neural origin based on histochemical, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural studies; they mostly follow a clinically benign course but are commonly mistaken for malignant tumors since they are solid looking, ulcerated tumors with ill-defined margins. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We herein report two cases of GCTs, one benign and one malignant, presenting with gross hematuria in a 14- and a 47-year-old female, respectively. RESULTS: Histopathology revealed characteristic GCTs with positive immunostaining for neural marker (S-100) and negative immunostaining for epithelial (cytokeratin, Cam 5.2, AE/A13), neuroendocrine (neuron specific enolase, chromogranin A, and synaptophysin) and sarcoma (desmin, vimentin) markers. The benign tumor was successfully managed conservatively with transurethral resection alone while for the malignant tumor, radical cystectomy, hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, anterior vaginectomy, plus lymph node dissection was done. Both cases show long-term disease free survival. CONCLUSION: We recommend careful pathologic assessment for establishing the appropriate diagnosis and either a conservative or aggressive surgical treatment for benign or localized malignant GCT of the urinary bladder, respectively

    Firm absorptive capacity:multidimensionality, drivers and contextual conditions

    Abstract Purpose: This paper aims to enrich absorptive capacity literature by specifically highlighting and adding environmental conditions and internationalisation process to the original conceptualisation. Design/methodology/approach: The authors undertake a conceptual analysis and present an enhanced framework of absorptive capacity by integrating multiple literature streams. The authors have analysed the most relevant literature to provide underlying justifications for the proposed conceptual model. Findings: Absorptive capacity ensures the long-term survival and success of a business. To develop absorptive capacity successfully, firms should focus on its various dimensions and existing intangible assets and external environment. The multidimensionality and richness of absorptive capacity is an under-explored area in the existing literature. The authors revisit the conceptualisation of absorptive capacity and add environmental conditions and the internationalisation process to the original conceptualisation. Absorptive capacity does not lead to a competitive advantage independent of its environment. To successfully develop it, firms have to adopt a holistic approach by considering the multi-dimensions, drivers and contextual conditions of absorptive capacity. Originality/value: This study contributes by conceptualising absorptive capacity as a dynamic capability. It is one of the first studies to specifically propose a framework that combines antecedents (prior knowledge, combinative capabilities and IT capabilities), moderators (environmental conditions, namely, market and technological turbulence, competitiveness and the internationalisation process) and consequences (competitive advantage). The study offers a unique conceptualisation with implications for researchers and managers. As a result, managers will have a well-defined blueprint to create value by using firm capabilities

    Sequence variants in four genes underlying Bardet-Biedl syndrome in consanguineous families.

    Purpose: To investigate the molecular basis of Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS) in five consanguineous families of Paki­stani origin. Methods: Linkage in two families (A and B) was established to BBS7 on chromosome 4q27, in family C to BBS8 on chromosome 14q32.1, and in family D to BBS10 on chromosome 12q21.2. Family E was investigated directly with exome sequence analysis. Results: Sanger sequencing revealed two novel mutations and three previously reported mutations in the BBS genes. These mutations include two deletions (c.580_582delGCA, c.1592_1597delTTCCAG) in the BBS7 gene, a missense mutation (p.Gln449His) in the BBS8 gene, a frameshift mutation (c.271_272insT) in the BBS10 gene, and a nonsense mutation (p.Ser40*) in the MKKS (BBS6) gene. Conclusions: Two novel mutations and three previously reported variants, identified in the present study, further extend the body of evidence implicating BBS6, BBS7, BBS8, and BBS10 in causing BBS
