Effect of quantum noise on Coulomb blockade in normal tunnel junctions at high voltages

We have investigated asymptotic behavior of normal tunnel junctions at voltages where even the best ohmic environments start to look like RC transmission lines. In the experiments, this is manifested by an exceedingly slow approach to the linear behavior above the Coulomb gap. As expected on the basis of the quantum theory taking into account interaction with the environmental modes, better fits are obtained using 1/sqrt{V}- than 1/V- dependence for the asymptote. These results agree with the horizon picture if the frequency-dependent phase velocity is employed instead of the speed of light in order to determine the extent of the surroundings seen by the junction.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys. Coherent Charge Transport in Metallic Proximity Structures

We develop a detailed microscopic analysis of electron transport in normal diffusive conductors in the presence of proximity induced superconducting correlation. We calculated the linear conductance of the system, the profile of the electric field and the densities of states. In the case of transparent metallic boundaries the temperature dependent conductance has a non-monotoneous ``reentrant'' structure. We argue that this behavior is due to nonequilibrium effects occuring in the normal metal in the presence of both superconducting correlations and the electric field there. Low transparent tunnel barriers suppress the nonequilibrium effects and destroy the reentrant behavior of the conductance. If the wire contains a loop, the conductance shows Aharonov-Bohm oscillations with the period Φ0=h/2e\Phi_0=h/2e as a function of the magnetic flux Φ\Phi inside the loop. The amplitude of these oscillations also demonstrates the reentrant behavior vanishing at T=0T=0 and decaying as 1/T1/T at relatively large temperatures. The latter behavior is due to low energy correlated electrons which penetrate deep into the normal metal and ``feel'' the effect of the magnetic flux Φ\Phi. We point out that the density of states and thus the ``strengh'' of the proximity effect can be tuned by the value of the flux inside the loop. Our results are fully consistent with recent experimental findings.Comment: 16 pages RevTeX, 23 Postscript figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.

    Feigin-Frenkel center in types B, C and D

For each simple Lie algebra g consider the corresponding affine vertex algebra V_{crit}(g) at the critical level. The center of this vertex algebra is a commutative associative algebra whose structure was described by a remarkable theorem of Feigin and Frenkel about two decades ago. However, only recently simple formulas for the generators of the center were found for the Lie algebras of type A following Talalaev's discovery of explicit higher Gaudin Hamiltonians. We give explicit formulas for generators of the centers of the affine vertex algebras V_{crit}(g) associated with the simple Lie algebras g of types B, C and D. The construction relies on the Schur-Weyl duality involving the Brauer algebra, and the generators are expressed as weighted traces over tensor spaces and, equivalently, as traces over the spaces of singular vectors for the action of the Lie algebra sl_2 in the context of Howe duality. This leads to explicit constructions of commutative subalgebras of the universal enveloping algebras U(g[t]) and U(g), and to higher order Hamiltonians in the Gaudin model associated with each Lie algebra g. We also introduce analogues of the Bethe subalgebras of the Yangians Y(g) and show that their graded images coincide with the respective commutative subalgebras of U(g[t]).Comment: 29 pages, constructions of Pfaffian-type Sugawara operators and commutative subalgebras in universal enveloping algebras are adde

Near-stochiometric and carbon-rich a-Si₁₋xCx:H thin films were deposited using the magnetron sputtering of Si target in Ar/CH₄ gas mixture. As-deposited nearstochimetric (x = 0.5) sample showed weak blue photoluminescence (PL), while PL of as-deposited carbon-rich (x = 0.7) sample was 20 times stronger and white in color. The films were annealed in pure argon, wet argon, and dry oxygen at 450 °C for 30 min. The intensity of PL in a-Si₁₋xCx:H layers were enhanced by the factor from 2 to 12 after annealing in dependence on the annealing atmosphere. The strongest oxidation and strongest light emission were observed in carbon-rich series (x = 0.7) after annealing in oxidizing atmosphere. Structural properties of the films were characterized by infra-red absorption spectroscopy, ellipsometry and electron paramagnetic resonance. The effect of carbon enrichment of a-Si₁₋xCx:H films and annealing atmosphere on the evolution of photoluminescence and local interatomic bonding structure in annealed material were studied and analyzed. It has been found that main effects of thermal treatments is strong enhancement of photoluminescence accompanied by formation of Si:C–Hn and Si–OxCy bonding. The strongest oxidation effect as well as strongest hotoluminescence were observed in carbon-rich a-SiC:H films

Modeling of grain subdivision during severe plastic deformation by VPSC method combined with disclination analysis

    No full text
Microstructure development during severe plastic deformation by simple shear is modeled using a combination of the visco-plastic self-consistent (VPSC) method and a disclination model. Strain incompatibilities between a homogeneous effective medium and a grain are calculated by VPSC. These are assumed to result in an accumulation of disclinations in the junctions of a grain that are relaxed by a growth of low-angle dislocation boundaries from the junctions. Predicted misorientation distributions between subgrains and their parent grains agree semi-quantitatively with experimental misorientation distributions for geometrically necessary boundaries. The texture after 100% simple shear was found to be insensitive to the presence of subgrains with misorientations less than 15º

Superconductive proximity effect in interacting disordered conductors

We present a general theory of the superconductive proximity effect in disordered normal--superconducting (N-S) structures, based on the recently developed Keldysh action approach. In the case of the absence of interaction in the normal conductor we reproduce known results for the Andreev conductance G_A at arbitrary relation between the interface resistance R_T and the diffusive resistance R_D. In two-dimensional N-S systems, electron-electron interaction in the Cooper channel of normal conductor is shown to strongly affect the value of G_A as well as its dependence on temperature, voltage and magnetic field. In particular, an unusual maximum of G_A as a function of temperature and/or magnetic field is predicted for some range of parameters R_D and R_T. The Keldysh action approach makes it possible to calculate the full statistics of charge transfer in such structures. As an application of this method, we calculate the noise power of an N-S contact as a function of voltage, temperature, magnetic field and frequency for arbitrary Cooper repulsion in the normal metal and arbitrary values of the ratio R_D/R_T.Comment: RevTeX, 28 pages, 18 PostScript figures; added and updated reference
