Studies on the ketocarotenoid pigments in the sea urchin gonads of Stomopneustes variolaris from the Mandapam Coast of Gulf of Mannar
Sea urchin gonads of Stomopneustes variolaris is a delicacy in many parts of the world. The bright yellow orange colour of the gonad derives from the carotenoids pigments and an important organoleptic criterion for its quality. The major carotenoids naturally found in sea urchins are ╬▓-carotene, ╬▒-carotene, ╬▓-echinenone, zeaxanthin, canthaxanthin, lutein, astaxanthin, diatoxanthin, fucoxanthin and alloxanthin. In the present study sea urchin S.variolaris was collected along the Mandapam coast following the lunar phase during pre-monsoon period and they were subjected to the pigment analysis
Envenomation by box Jelly fish
During the month of August 2016, two cases of
envenomation by jellyfishes were reported from
Dhanushkodi and Rameswaram. In the Dhanuskodi
incident, two fishermen were stung by jellyfish
tentacles attached to the gill net they were
operating. Initially both these fishermen felt that
the pain due to the sting would go within a few
hours. However their pain started to increase with
severe low back pain, excruciating muscle cramps
and nausea. This kind of pain development due to
jellyfish sting is characteristic of Irukandji
syndrome. Enquiries with local fishermen revealed
that a box jellyfish locally known as тАЬ Naalu Moolai
SoriтАЭ was responsible. In the second incidence, a
fisherman working in a trawler was stung when he
handled the box jellyfish in the catch
Traditional Knowledge on the Edibility of Sea urchin roe among the Fisher folk Community of the Gulf of Mannar region with a note on their Cuisine
Sea urchins are marine echinoderms and their body consists of five gonads covered by a calcareous test. The gonads of male and female sea
urchins are commonly called тАШroeтАЩ and have been known a delicacy in several parts of the world. However in India not all the coastal community
eat the gonads of sea urchin, but fishers of a fishing village along Gulf of Mannar, have the habit of consuming the sea urchin roe for centuries. There are a variety of
sea urchin recipes viz., Risotto with Sea Urchin-Dill, and Smoked Caviar-Sea Urchin Mousse with Ginger Vinaigrette, Sea Urchin Bruschetta and Sea Urchin Linguine
available in the western world, but in India the cuisine of sea urchin roe is not well known, the present study documented for the first time on the two cooking
methods viz., Grilling and dry fry of sea urchin roe from the fisherfolk community of Gulf of Mannar region

Scyphozoan Jelly fish Diversity in the Gulf of Mannar and Palk bay with an account on the Invasive Jelly fish Phyllorhiza punctata
Swarming dynamics of scyphozoan jelly fishes have great in-fluence on the coastal ecosystem, wherein some scyphozoan are filter feeder and others are piscivores/carnivores. The summer swarming of jellyfishes along the Gulf of Mannar and Palk Bay coast was monitored since 2013 during the months from April to September, and different species of jelly fishes could be recorded in the coastal waters. Furthermore the beach seine operation hauls in several tons of jellyfishes during their operation along this coast, creating a nuisance situation in the fishing operation. Hence the present study was attempted to document the different species of jelly fishes which are found in the coastal waters of Gulf of Mannar and Palk Bay
