    We show that the smooth homotopy 4-sphere obtained by Gluck twisting the m-twist n-roll spin of any unknotting number one knot is diffeomorphic to the standard 4-sphere, for any pair of integers (m,n). It follows as a corollary that an infinite collection of twisted doubles of Gompf's infinite order corks are standard

    The Origin of Soft X-rays in DQ Herculis

    DQ Herculis (Nova Herculis 1934) is a deeply eclipsing cataclysmic variable containing a magnetic white dwarf primary. The accretion disk is thought to block our line of sight to the white dwarf at all orbital phases due to its extreme inclination angle. Nevertheless, soft X-rays were detected from DQ Her with ROSAT PSPC. To probe the origin of these soft X-rays, we have performed Chandra ACIS observations. We confirm that DQ Her is an X-ray source. The bulk of the X-rays are from a point-like source and exhibit a shallow partial eclipse. We interpret this as due to scattering of the unseen central X-ray source, probably in an accretion disk wind. At the same time, we observe what appear to be weak extended X-ray features around DQ Her, which we interpret as an X-ray emitting knot in the nova shell.Comment: 18 pages including 4 figures, accepted for publication in Astrphyisical Journa

    On the abundance of Lithium in T Coronae Borealis

    We have obtained high resolution echelle spectroscopy of the recurrent nova T CrB. We find that the surface lithium abundance in T CrB is signifcantly enhanced compared to field M giants, where it is not detectable. We offer possible explanations for this in terms of either a delay in the onset of convection in the giant star, enhanced coronal activity due to star-spots or the enhancement of Li resulting from the nova explosion(s).Comment: 3 pages, 1 figure (a and b), accepted by MNRA

    A compact noise covariance matrix model for MVDR beamforming

    Acoustic beamforming is routinely used to improve the SNR of the received signal in applications such as hearing aids, robot audition, augmented reality, teleconferencing, source localisation and source tracking. The beamformer can be made adaptive by using an estimate of the time-varying noise covariance matrix in the spectral domain to determine an optimised beam pattern in each frequency bin that is specific to the acoustic environment and that can respond to temporal changes in it. However, robust estimation of the noise covariance matrix remains a challenging task especially in non-stationary acoustic environments. This paper presents a compact model of the signal covariance matrix that is defined by a small number of parameters whose values can be reliably estimated. The model leads to a robust estimate of the noise covariance matrix which can, in turn, be used to construct a beamformer. The performance of beamformers designed using this approach is evaluated for a spherical microphone array under a range of conditions using both simulated and measured room impulse responses. The proposed approach demonstrates consistent gains in intelligibility and perceptual quality metrics compared to the static and adaptive beamformers used as baselines

    Challenging the orthodoxy: union learning representatives as organic intellectuals

    Teacher education and continuing professional development have become a key areas of controversy in England since the period of school sector restructuring following the 1988 Education Reform Act. More recently teacher training and professional development have often been used to promote and reinforce a narrow focus on the government’s ‘standards agenda’. However, the emerging discourse of ‘new professionalism’ has raised the profile of professional development in schools, and together with union learning representatives, there are opportunities to secure real improvements in teachers’ access to continuing professional development. This paper argues however that union learning representatives must go beyond advocating for better access to professional development and should raise more fundamental questions about the nature of professional development and the education system it serves. Drawing on Gramsci’s notion of the ‘organic intellectual’, the paper argues that union learning representatives have a key role as organisers of ideas – creating spaces in which the ideological dominance of current policy orthodoxy might be challenged

    Another Faint UV Object Associated with a Globular Cluster X-Ray Source: The Case of M92

    The core of the metal poor Galactic Globular Cluster M92 (NGC 6341) has been observed with WFPC2 on the Hubble Space Telescope through visual, blue and mid-UV filters in a program devoted to study the evolved stellar population in a selected sample of Galactic Globular Clusters. In the UV (m255,m255−U)(m_{255}, m_{255}-U) color magnitude diagram we have discovered a faint `UV-dominant' object. This star lies within the error box of a Low Luminosity Globular Cluster X-ray source (LLGCX) recently found in the core of M92. The properties of the UV star discovered in M92 are very similar to those of other UV stars found in the core of some clusters (M13, 47 Tuc, M80, etc)---all of them are brighter in the UV than in the visible and are located in the vicinity of a LLGCX.     High Spectral Resolution Measurement of the Sunyaev–Zel'dovich Effect Null with Z-Spec

    The Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect spectrum crosses through a null where ΔT_CMB = 0 near ν_0 = 217 GHz. In a cluster of galaxies, ν0 can be shifted from the canonical thermal SZ effect value by corrections to the SZ effect scattering due to the properties of the inter-cluster medium. We have measured the SZ effect in the hot galaxy cluster RX J 1347.5 – 1145 with Z-Spec, an R ~ 300 grating spectrometer sensitive between 185 and 305 GHz. These data comprise a high spectral resolution measurement around the null of the SZ effect and clearly exhibit the transition from negative to positive ΔT_CMB over the Z-Spec band. The SZ null position is measured to be ν_0 = 225.8 ± 2.5(stat.) ± 1.2(sys.) GHz, which differs from the canonical null frequency by 3.0σ and is evidence for modifications to the canonical thermal SZ effect shape. Assuming the measured shift in ν0 is due only to relativistic corrections to the SZ spectrum, we place the limit kT_e = 17.1 ± 5.3 keV from the zero-point measurement alone. By simulating the response of the instrument to the sky, we are able to generate likelihood functions in {y_0, T_e, v_pec} space. For v_pec = 0 km s^(–1), we measure the best-fitting SZ model to be y_0 = 4.6^(+0.6)_(–0.9) × 10^(–4), T_e, 0 = 15.2^(+12)_(–7.4) keV. When v pec is allowed to vary, a most probable value of v_pec = + 450 ± 810 km s^(–1) is found

    Quantum projection filter for a highly nonlinear model in cavity QED

    Both in classical and quantum stochastic control theory a major role is played by the filtering equation, which recursively updates the information state of the system under observation. Unfortunately, the theory is plagued by infinite-dimensionality of the information state which severely limits its practical applicability, except in a few select cases (e.g. the linear Gaussian case.) One solution proposed in classical filtering theory is that of the projection filter. In this scheme, the filter is constrained to evolve in a finite-dimensional family of densities through orthogonal projection on the tangent space with respect to the Fisher metric. Here we apply this approach to the simple but highly nonlinear quantum model of optical phase bistability of a stongly coupled two-level atom in an optical cavity. We observe near-optimal performance of the quantum projection filter, demonstrating the utility of such an approach.Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures.
