    TGRS Observations of Positron Annihilation in Classical Novae

    The TGRS experiment on board the Wind spacecraft has many advantages as a sky monitor --- broad field of view (~2 pi) centered on the south ecliptic pole), long life (1994-present), and stable low background and continuous coverage due to Wind's high altitude high eccentricity orbit. The Ge detector has sufficient energy resolution (3-4 keV at 511 keV) to resolve a cosmic positron annihilation line from the strong background annihilation line from beta-decays induced by cosmic ray impacts on the instrument, if the cosmic line is Doppler-shifted by this amount. Such lines (blueshifted) are predicted from nucleosynthesis in classical novae. We have searched the entire TGRS database for 1995-1997 for this line, with negative results. In principle such a search could yield an unbiased upper limit on the highly-uncertain Galactic nova rate. We carefully examined the times around the known nova events during this period, also with negative results. The upper limit on the nova line flux in a 6-hr interval is typically <3.8 E-3 photon/(cm2 s) at 4.6 sigma. We performed the same analysis for times around the outburst of Nova Vel 1999, obtaining a worse limit due to recent degradation of the detector response caused by cosmic ray induced damage.Comment: 5 pp. inc. 3 figs.     Transient Gamma Ray Spectrometer Measurements of Gamma-Ray Lines from Novae. I. Limits on the Positron Annihilation Line in Five Individual Novae

    The Transient Gamma Ray Spectrometer (TGRS) on board the WIND spacecraft has spent most of the interval 1995-1997 in a high-altitude orbit where gamma-ray backgrounds are low. Its high-resolution Ge spectrometer is thus able to detect weak lines which are slightly offset from stronger background features. One such line is predicted from nucleosynthesis in classical novae, where beta-decays on a time-scale of a few hours in an expanding envelope produce positrons that annihilate to generate a line which is blueshifted by a few keV away from the background annihilation line at 511 keV. The broad TGRS field of view contained five known Galactic novae during 1995 January - 1997 June, and we have searched the spectra taken around the times of these events for the blueshifted nova annihilation line. Although no definite detections were made, the method is shown to be sensitive enough to detect novae occurring on ONeMg-rich white dwarfs out to about 2.5 kpc.Comment: 27 pp. + 10 figs., or offprint mailed by request to [email protected]

    Complex-Temperature Singularities in the d=2d=2 Ising Model. III. Honeycomb Lattice

    We study complex-temperature properties of the uniform and staggered susceptibilities χ\chi and χ(a)\chi^{(a)} of the Ising model on the honeycomb lattice. From an analysis of low-temperature series expansions, we find evidence that χ\chi and χ(a)\chi^{(a)} both have divergent singularities at the point z=1zz=-1 \equiv z_{\ell} (where z=e2Kz=e^{-2K}), with exponents γ=γ,a=5/2\gamma_{\ell}'= \gamma_{\ell,a}'=5/2. The critical amplitudes at this singularity are calculated. Using exact results, we extract the behaviour of the magnetisation MM and specific heat CC at complex-temperature singularities. We find that, in addition to its zero at the physical critical point, MM diverges at z=1z=-1 with exponent β=1/4\beta_{\ell}=-1/4, vanishes continuously at z=±iz=\pm i with exponent βs=3/8\beta_s=3/8, and vanishes discontinuously elsewhere along the boundary of the complex-temperature ferromagnetic phase. CC diverges at z=1z=-1 with exponent α=2\alpha_{\ell}'=2 and at v=±i/3v=\pm i/\sqrt{3} (where v=tanhKv = \tanh K) with exponent αe=1\alpha_e=1, and diverges logarithmically at z=±iz=\pm i. We find that the exponent relation α+2β+γ=2\alpha'+2\beta+\gamma'=2 is violated at z=1z=-1; the right-hand side is 4 rather than 2.     Complex-Temperature Properties of the Ising Model on 2D Heteropolygonal Lattices

    Using exact results, we determine the complex-temperature phase diagrams of the 2D Ising model on three regular heteropolygonal lattices, (3636)(3 \cdot 6 \cdot 3 \cdot 6) (kagom\'{e}), (3122)(3 \cdot 12^2), and (482)(4 \cdot 8^2) (bathroom tile), where the notation denotes the regular nn-sided polygons adjacent to each vertex. We also work out the exact complex-temperature singularities of the spontaneous magnetisation. A comparison with the properties on the square, triangular, and hexagonal lattices is given. In particular, we find the first case where, even for isotropic spin-spin exchange couplings, the nontrivial non-analyticities of the free energy of the Ising model lie in a two-dimensional, rather than one-dimensional, algebraic variety in the z=e2Kz=e^{-2K} plane.Comment: 31 pages, latex, postscript figure

    Gamma-ray limits on Galactic 60Fe nucleosynthesis and implications on the Origin of the 26Al emission

    The Gamma Ray Imaging Spectrometer (GRIS) recently observed the gamma-ray emission from the Galactic center region. We have detected the 1809 keV Galactic 26Al emission at a significance level of 6.8-sigma but have found no evidence for emission at 1173 keV and 1332 keV, expected from the decay chain of the nucleosynthetic 60Fe. The isotopic abundances and fluxes are derived for different source distribution models. The resulting abundances are between 2.6+-0.4 and 4.5+-0.7 Solar Masses for 26Al and a 2-sigma upper limit for 60Fe between 1.7 and 3.1 Solar Masses. The measured 26Al emission flux is significantly higher than that derived from the CGRO/COMPTEL 1.8 MeV sky map. This suggests that a fraction of the 26Al emission may come from extended sources with a low surface brightness that are invisible to COMPTEL. We obtain a 60Fe to 26Al flux ratio 2-sigma upper limit of 0.14, which is slightly lower than the 0.16 predicted from current nucleosynthesis models assuming that SNII are the major contributors to the galactic 26Al. Since the uncertainties in the predicted fluxes are large (up to a factor of 2), our measurement is still compatible with the theoretical expectations.Comment: to be published in Astroph.     Social presence and dishonesty in retail

    Self-service checkouts (SCOs) in retail can benefit consumers and retailers, providing control and autonomy to shoppers independent from staff, together with reduced queuing times. Recent research indicates that the absence of staff may provide the opportunity for consumers to behave dishonestly, consistent with a perceived lack of social presence. This study examined whether a social presence in the form of various instantiations of embodied, visual, humanlike SCO interface agents had an effect on opportunistic behaviour. Using a simulated SCO scenario, participants experienced various dilemmas in which they could financially benefit themselves undeservedly. We hypothesised that a humanlike social presence integrated within the checkout screen would receive more attention and result in fewer instances of dishonesty compared to a less humanlike agent. This was partially supported by the results. The findings contribute to the theoretical framework in social presence research. We concluded that companies adopting self-service technology may consider the implementation of social presence in technology applications to support ethical consumer behaviour, but that more research is required to explore the mixed findings in the current study.<br/

    How do novel feed formulations affect growth performance, oxidative stress and immune response of atlantic salmon?

    Trabajo presentado en la International Conference & Exposition Aquaculture Europe, celebrada en Funchal, Maderia (Portugal) del 04 al 07 de octubre de 2021.[Introduction]: The aquaculture industry continues to grow faster than any other sector of food production. The need to make aquaculture as sustainable and more environmentally conscious as possible is becoming clearer everyday (FAO, 2020). With this in mind, the replacement of fishmeal and fish oil in aquafeeds has been studied in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) (e.g., Bendiksen et al., 2011) with many products emerging as potential alternatives to conventional ones (e.g., Hodar et al., 2020). One of the main objectives of the EU project GAIN is to evaluate new ingredients that are already commercially available using different formulation concepts that consider all the fish nutritional needs. GAIN diets are based on circular economy principles and maximize resource efficiency, while contributing to zero waste in the agri-food value chain, being cost-effective feeds, and having good social acceptability. The present study aims to understand the actual effects of these novel feed formulations on growth performance, nutritional status, immunity and oxidative status.[Methods]: Quadruplicate groups of Atlantic salmon were fed ad libitum with three different diets. Two diets were developed to facilitate the eco-intensification of aquaculture through increased circularity and resource utilization (NOPAP - formula without processed animal protein - and PAP - formula with processed animal protein). The third diet was a commercial-like formulation that was used as a control. After a 96-day feeding trial, plasma samples were collected to evaluate humoral parameters (protease, anti-protease, bactericidal activity, and IgM). Liver and head kidney tissues (collected at day 45 and 96) were used for the simultaneous profiling by PCR array of a panel of 38 or 28 genes, respectively, as markers of growth performance, lipid and energy metabolism, and immune and antioxidant activities. Liver samples were also used to analyse lipid peroxidation. In addition, after 45 and 96 days, the lice count and fish welfare were also assessed by standard methods. The dorsal skin and foregut were collected at days 45 and 96 for mucosal mapping (mucous cell area, density, and barrier status).[Results]: Growth performance was adequate and comparable to commercial standards for the novel diets tested. Other parameters analysed, including those related to key performance indicators, intestinal and skin dorsal mucosal mapping, plasma innate immune defences, and lipid peroxidation in the liver did not significantly differ across diets. Regarding head kidney gene expression, at Day 45, 2 out of 28 genes in the array were differentially expressed (p<0.05). Gene expression of fish fed with novel feed formulations showed a pro-inflammatory profile evidenced by the up regulation of il-8, and a down regulation of il-10.At Day 96, the same genes continued to be differentially expressed, but gene clec1b (membrane protein) was also up-regulated. However, the rest of the analyses do not support this pro-inflammatory profile. A longer trial may bring light to some of the current results. In turn, the liver had a differential gene expression only at the second sampling point (Day96), where 4 out of 38 genes in the array were affected, including growth performance (igf2), lipid metabolism, elongases (elovl4), and energy metabolism (ucp2l and sirt1). These transcriptomic changes may be attributed to an initial response to the experimental diets. Cross-analysis of gene expression by time points and dietary treatment (two-way ANOVA) yielded only 2 out of 38 genes that had significantly different expression across treatments. The differentially expressed genes were related to growth performance (igf2) and lipid metabolism (elovl4).[Conclusions]: The novel feed formulations of the GAIN project for Atlantic Salmon seem to be viable options for the near future. In any case, all results are related to the formulation itself and cannot be attributed to a specific ingredient alteration.     CMYA5 establishes cardiac dyad architecture and positioning

    Cardiac excitation-contraction coupling requires dyads, the nanoscopic microdomains formed adjacent to Z-lines by apposition of transverse tubules and junctional sarcoplasmic reticulum. Disruption of dyad architecture and function are common features of diseased cardiomyocytes. However, little is known about the mechanisms that modulate dyad organization during cardiac development, homeostasis, and disease. Here, we use proximity proteomics in intact, living hearts to identify proteins enriched near dyads. Among these proteins is CMYA5, an under-studied striated muscle protein that co-localizes with Z-lines, junctional sarcoplasmic reticulum proteins, and transverse tubules in mature cardiomyocytes. During cardiac development, CMYA5 positioning adjacent to Z-lines precedes junctional sarcoplasmic reticulum positioning or transverse tubule formation. CMYA5 ablation disrupts dyad architecture, dyad positioning at Z-lines, and junctional sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ release, leading to cardiac dysfunction and inability to tolerate pressure overload. These data provide mechanistic insights into cardiomyopathy pathogenesis by demonstrating that CMYA5 anchors junctional sarcoplasmic reticulum to Z-lines, establishes dyad architecture, and regulates dyad Ca2+ release.R01 HL146634 - NHLBI NIH HHSPublished versio

    Genotoksičnost metalnih nanočestica: osvrt na podatke istraživanja In vivo

    With increasing production and application of a variety of nanomaterials (NMs), research on their cytotoxic and genotoxic potential grows, as the exposure to these nano-sized materials may potentially result in adverse health effects. In large part, indications for potential DNA damaging effects of nanoparticles (NPs) originate from inconsistent in vitro studies. To clarify these effects, the implementation of in vivo studies has been emphasised. This paper summarises study results of genotoxic effects of NPs, which are available in the recent literature. They provide indications that some NP types cause both DNA strand breaks and chromosomal damages in experimental animals. Their genotoxic effects, however, do not depend only on particle size, surface modifi cation (particle coating), and exposure route, but also on exposure duration. Currently available animal studies may suggest differing mechanisms (depending on the duration of exposure) by which living organisms react to NP contact. Nevertheless, due to considerable inconsistencies in the recent literature and the lack of standardised test methods - a reliable hazard assessment of NMs is still limited. Therefore, international organisations (e.g. NIOSH) suggest utmost caution when potential exposure of humans to NMs occurs, as long as evidence of their toxicological and genotoxic effect(s) is limited.S povećanjem proizvodnje i primjene niza različitih nanomaterijala (NM) raste i potreba istraživanja njihovih mogućih citotoksičnih i genotoksičnih učinaka kao i drugih štetnih učinaka na zdravlje u uvjetima profesionalne ili opće izloženost ljudi. Indikacije potencijanog oštećenja DNA kojeg uzrokuju nanočestice u velikoj mjeri proizlaze iz nedosljednih in vitro ispitivanja. Kako bi se razjasnili ti učinci, naglašena je potreba provedbe in vivo ispitivanja. Ovaj pregledni rad sažima rezultate procjene genotoksičnih učinaka nanočestica koji su objavljeni u novijoj stručnoj i znanstvenoj literaturi. Navedeni rezultati pokazuju da određene nanočestice uzrokuju lomove u molekuli DNA i oštećuju kromosome u eksperimentalnim životinjama. Njihovi genotoksični učinci ne ovise samo o veličini čestice, modifi kaciji površine (oblaganje čestice) i načinu izlaganja, već i o trajanju izloženosti nanočesticama. Postojeća istraživanja provedena na životinjama upućuju na različite mehanizme koji ovise o trajanju izlaganja i pomoću kojih živi organizmi reagiraju na doticaj s nanočesticama. Međutim postoje brojne nedosljednosti u novijoj literaturi, a standardne testne metode nisu dostupne pa je stoga pouzdanija procjena opasnosti od izlaganja nanomaterijalima u ljudi još uvijek veoma ograničena. Stoga se u međunarodnim dokumentima savjetuje oprez prilikom svakog izlaganja ljudi nanomaterijalima kako bi se spriječili mogući opći toksični genotoksični učinci
