    The Maine League of Young Voters is an organization involved in educational and political civic engagement activities in the State of Maine. A membership base consisting of hundreds of grassroots members makes up the base of the organization. By studying the life cycle of the Maine League of Young Voters and comparing it to similar civic engagement organizations, the research here aims to increase the body of knowledge available about how these types of organizations evolve and change. Findings from surveys and interviews indicated that the organization was over-extending the membership, despite a strong grassroots network, and that more delegation of tasks and leadership is necessary. Recommendations are included for improving the ability of the organization to detect and self-assess potential difficulties in the future

    Improved results for N=(2,2) super Yang-Mills theory using supersymmetric discrete light-cone quantization

    We consider the (1+1)-dimensional N=(2,2){\cal N}=(2,2) super Yang--Mills theory which is obtained by dimensionally reducing N=1{\cal N}=1 super Yang--Mills theory in four dimension to two dimensions. We do our calculations in the large-NcN_c approximation using Supersymmetric Discrete Light Cone Quantization. The objective is to calculate quantities that might be investigated by researchers using other numerical methods. We present a precision study of the low-mass spectrum and the stress-energy correlator . We find that the mass gap of this theory closes as the numerical resolution goes to infinity and that the correlator in the intermediate rr region behaves like r4.75r^{-4.75}.Comment: 18 pages, 8 figure

    Noncommutative Superspace, N=1/2 Supersymmetry, Field Theory and String Theory

    We deform the standard four dimensional N=1\N=1 superspace by making the odd coordinates θ\theta not anticommuting, but satisfying a Clifford algebra. Consistency determines the other commutation relations of the coordinates. In particular, the ordinary spacetime coordinates xx cannot commute. We study chiral superfields and vector superfields and their interactions. As in ordinary noncommutative field theory, a change of variables allows us to express the gauge interactions in terms of component fields which are subject to standard gauge transformation laws. Unlike ordinary noncommutative field theories, the change of the Lagrangian is a polynomial in the deformation parameter. Despite the deformation, the noncommutative theories still have an antichiral ring with all its usual properties. We show how these theories with precisely this deformation arise in string theory in a graviphoton background.Comment: 19 page

    WZW-like Action for Heterotic String Field Theory

    We complete the construction of the Neveu-Schwarz sector of heterotic string field theory begun in hep-th/0406212 by giving a closed-form expression for the action and gauge transformations. Just as the Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) action for open superstring field theory can be constructed from pure-gauge fields in bosonic open string field theory, our heterotic string field theory action is constructed from pure-gauge fields in bosonic closed string field theory. The construction involves a simple alternative form of the WZW action which is consistent with the algebraic structures of closed string field theory.Comment: 22 pages, no figures, LaTeX2

    Recruitment of a critically endangered sawfish into a riverine nursery depends on natural flow regimes

    The freshwater sawfish (Pristis pristis) was recently listed as the most Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered (EDGE) animal. The Fitzroy River in the remote Kimberley region of north-western Australia represents a significant stronghold for the species, which uses the freshwater reaches of the river as a nursery. There is also mounting pressure to develop the water resources of the region for agriculture that may substantially affect life history dynamics of sawfish in this system. However, the relationship between hydrology and population dynamics of freshwater sawfish was unknown. We used standardized catch data collected over 17 years to determine how wet season volume influences recruitment of freshwater sawfish into their riverine nursery. Negligible recruitment occurred in years with few days of high flood levels (above 98th percentile of cease-to-flow stage height), and relatively high recruitment occurred in years with 14 or more days of high flood levels. This relationship is indicative of a distinct boom-or-bust cycle, whereby freshwater sawfish rely almost entirely on the few years with large wet season floods, and the brief periods of highest water levels within these years, to replenish juvenile populations in the Fitzroy River nursery. This has direct implications for sustainable water resource management for the Fitzroy River basin in order to preserve one of the last known intact nursery habitats for this globally threatened species
