Isotropic-medium three-dimensional cloaks for acoustic and electromagnetic waves
We propose a generalization of the two-dimensional eikonal-limit cloak
derived from a conformal transformation to three dimensions. The proposed cloak
is a spherical shell composed of only isotropic media; it operates in the
transmission mode and requires no mirror or ground plane. Unlike the well-known
omnidirectional spherical cloaks, it may reduce visibility of an arbitrary
object only for a very limited range of observation angles. In the
short-wavelength limit, this cloaking structure restores not only the
trajectories of incident rays, but also their phase, which is a necessary
ingredient to complete invisibility. Both scalar-wave (acoustic) and transverse
vector-wave (electromagnetic) versions are presented.Comment: 17 pages, 12 figure
On the Progenitor System of the Type Iax Supernova 2014dt in M61
We present pre-explosion and post-explosion Hubble Space Telescope images of
the Type Iax supernova (SN Iax) 2014dt in M61. After astrometrically aligning
these images, we do not detect any stellar sources at the position of the SN in
the pre-explosion images to relatively deep limits (3 sigma limits of M_F438W >
-5.0 mag and M_F814W > -5.9 mag). These limits are similar to the luminosity of
SN 2012Z's progenitor system (M_F435W = -5.43 +/- 0.15 and M_F814W = -5.24 +/-
0.16 mag), the only probable detected progenitor system in pre-explosion images
of a SN Iax, and indeed, of any white dwarf supernova. SN 2014dt is consistent
with having a C/O white-dwarf primary/helium-star companion progenitor system,
as was suggested for SN 2012Z, although perhaps with a slightly smaller or
hotter donor. The data are also consistent with SN 2014dt having a low-mass red
giant or main-sequence star companion. The data rule out main-sequence stars
with M_init > 16 M_sun and most evolved stars with M_init > 8 M_sun as being
the progenitor of SN 2014dt. Hot Wolf-Rayet stars are also allowed, but the
lack of nearby bright sources makes this scenario unlikely. Because of its
proximity (D = 12 Mpc), SN 2014dt is ideal for long-term monitoring, where
images in ~2 years may detect the companion star or the luminous bound remnant
of the progenitor white dwarf.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, submitted to ApJ
Galactic Twins of the Ring Nebula Around SN1987A and a Possible LBV-like Phase for Sk-69 202
Some core-collapse supernovae show clear signs of interaction with dense
circumstellar material that often appears to be non-spherical. Circumstellar
nebulae around supernova progenitors provide clues to the origin of that
asymmetry in immediate pre-supernova evolution. Here I discuss outstanding
questions about the formation of the ring nebula around SN1987A and some
implications of similar ring nebulae around Galactic B supergiants. Several
clues hint that SN1987A's nebula may have been ejected in an LBV-like event,
rather than through interacting winds in a transition from a red supergiant to
a blue supergiant.Comment: 2 pages, to appear in procedings of "Massive stars: fundamental

The Structure of the Homunculus. III. Forming a Disk and Bipolar Lobes in a Rotating Surface Explosion
We present a semi-analytic model for shaping the nebula around eta Carinae
that accounts for the simultaneous production of bipolar lobes and an
equatorial disk through a rotating surface explosion. Material is launched
normal to the surface of an oblate rotating star with an initial kick velocity
that scales approximately with the local escape speed. Thereafter, ejecta
follow ballistic orbital trajectories, feeling only a central force
corresponding to a radiatively reduced gravity. Our model is conceptually
similar to the wind-compressed disk model of Bjorkman & Cassinelli, but we
modify it to an explosion instead of a steady line-driven wind, we include a
rotationally-distorted star, and we treat the dynamics somewhat differently.
Continuum-driving avoids the disk inhibition that normally operates in
line-driven winds. Our model provides a simple method by which rotating hot
stars can simultaneously produce intrinsically bipolar and equatorial mass
ejections, without an aspherical environment or magnetic fields. Although
motivated by eta Carinae, the model may have generic application to other LBVs,
B[e] stars, or SN1987A's nebula. When near-Eddington radiative driving is less
influential, our model generalizes to produce bipolar morphologies without
disks, as seen in many PNe.Comment: ApJ accepted, 9 page
The effect of acute exercise on objectively measured sleep and cognition in older adults
Background: Exercise can improve cognition in aging, however it is unclear how exercise influences cognition, and sleep may partially explain this association. The current study aimed to investigate whether objectively measured sleep mediates the effect of an acute exercise intervention on cognition in older adults. Methods: Participants were 30 cognitively unimpaired, physically active older adults (69.2 ± 4.3 years) with poor sleep (determined via self-report). After a triple baseline cognitive assessment to account for any natural fluctuation in cognitive performance, participants completed either a single bout of 20-minutes of high intensity exercise on a cycle ergometer, or a control condition, in a cross-over trial design. Cognition was measured immediately post-intervention and the following day, and sleep (total sleep time, sleep onset latency, sleep efficiency, % of rapid eye movement sleep, light sleep and deep sleep) was characterized using WatchPAT™ at baseline (5 nights) and measured for one night after both exercise and control conditions. Results: Results showed no effect of the exercise intervention on cognition immediately post-intervention, nor an effect of acute exercise on any sleep variable. There was no mediating effect of sleep on associations between exercise and cognition. However, a change from baseline to post-intervention in light sleep and deep sleep did predict change in episodic memory at the ~24 h post-intervention cognitive assessment, regardless of intervention condition. Discussion: There was no effect of acute high intensity exercise on sleep or cognition in the current study. However, results suggest that associations between sleep and cognition may exist independently of exercise in our sample. Further research is required, and such studies may aid in informing the most effective lifestyle interventions for cognitive health
Spitzer Space Telescope Infrared Imaging and Spectroscopy of the Crab Nebula
We present 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, 8.0, 24, and 70 micron images of the Crab Nebula
obtained with the Spitzer Space Telescope IRAC and MIPS cameras, Low- and
High-resolution Spitzer IRS spectra of selected positions within the nebula,
and a near-infrared ground-based image made in the light of [Fe II]1.644
micron. The 8.0 micron image, made with a bandpass that includes [Ar II]7.0
micron, resembles the general morphology of visible H-alpha and near-IR [Fe II]
line emission, while the 3.6 and 4.5 micron images are dominated by continuum
synchrotron emission. The 24 micron and 70 micron images show enhanced emission
that may be due to line emission or the presence of a small amount of warm dust
in the nebula on the order of less than 1% of a solar mass. The ratio of the
3.6 and 4.5 micron images reveals a spatial variation in the synchrotron power
law index ranging from approximately 0.3 to 0.8 across the nebula. Combining
this information with optical and X-ray synchrotron images, we derive a
broadband spectrum that reflects the superposition of the flatter spectrum jet
and torus with the steeper diffuse nebula, and suggestions of the expected
pileup of relativistic electrons just before the exponential cutoff in the
X-ray. The pulsar, and the associated equatorial toroid and polar jet
structures seen in Chandra and HST images (Hester et al. 2002) can be
identified in all of the IRAC images. We present the IR photometry of the
pulsar. The forbidden lines identified in the high resolution IR spectra are
all double due to Doppler shifts from the front and back of the expanding
nebula and give an expansion velocity of approximately 1264 km/s.Comment: 21 pages, 4 tables, 16 figure
The UV Scattering Halo of the Central Source Associated with Eta Carinae
We have made an extensive study of the UV spectrum of Eta Carinae, and find
that we do not directly observe the star and its wind in the UV. Because of
dust along our line of sight, the UV light that we observe arises from
bound-bound scattering at large impact parameters. We obtain a reasonable fit
to the UV spectrum by using only the flux that originates outside 0.033". This
explains why we can still observe the primary star in the UV despite the large
optical extinction -- it is due to the presence of an intrinsic coronagraph in
the Eta Carinae system, and to the extension of the UV emitting region. It is
not due to peculiar dust properties alone. We have computed the spectrum of the
purported companion star, and show that it could only be directly detected in
the UV spectrum preferentially in the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer
(FUSE) spectral region (912-1175 Ang.). However, we find no direct evidence for
a companion star, with the properties indicated by X-ray studies and studies of
the Weigelt blobs, in UV spectra. This might be due to reprocessing of the
companion's light by the dense stellar wind of the primary. Broad FeII and
[FeII] emission lines, which form in the stellar wind, are detected in spectra
taken in the SE lobe, 0.2" from the central star. The wind spectrum shows some
similarities to the spectra of the B & D Weigelt blobs, but also shows some
marked differences in that high excitation lines, and lines pumped by Ly-alpha,
are not seen. The detection of the broad lines lends support to our
interpretation of the UV spectrum, and to our model for Eta Carinae.Comment: To appear in ApJ. 57 pages with 18 figure
Proteomic atlas of organ vasculopathies triggered by Staphylococcus aureus sepsis
Sepsis is a life-threatening condition triggered by a dysregulated host response to microbial infection resulting in vascular dysfunction, organ failure and death. Here we provide a semi-quantitative atlas of the murine vascular cell-surface proteome at the organ level, and how it changes during sepsis. Using in vivo chemical labeling and high-resolution mass spectrometry, we demonstrate the presence of a vascular proteome that is perfusable and shared across multiple organs. This proteome is enriched in membrane-anchored proteins, including multiple regulators of endothelial barrier functions and innate immunity. Further, we automated our workflows and applied them to a murine model of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) sepsis to unravel changes during systemic inflammatory responses. We provide an organ-specific atlas of both systemic and local changes of the vascular proteome triggered by sepsis. Collectively, the data indicates that MRSA-sepsis triggers extensive proteome remodeling of the vascular cell surfaces, in a tissue-specific manner.Fil: Gómez Toledo, Alejandro. Quantum teleportation on a photonic chip
Quantum teleportation is a fundamental concept in quantum physics which now
finds important applications at the heart of quantum technology including
quantum relays, quantum repeaters and linear optics quantum computing (LOQC).
Photonic implementations have largely focussed on achieving long distance
teleportation due to its suitability for decoherence-free communication.
Teleportation also plays a vital role in the scalability of photonic quantum
computing, for which large linear optical networks will likely require an
integrated architecture. Here we report the first demonstration of quantum
teleportation in which all key parts - entanglement preparation, Bell-state
analysis and quantum state tomography - are performed on a reconfigurable
integrated photonic chip. We also show that a novel element-wise
characterisation method is critical to mitigate component errors, a key
technique which will become increasingly important as integrated circuits reach
higher complexities necessary for quantum enhanced operation.Comment: Originally submitted version - refer to online journal for accepted
