Catalytic Ozonation of Phenolic Wastewater: Identification and Toxicity of Intermediates
A new strategy in catalytic ozonation removal method for degradation and detoxification of phenol from industrial wastewater
was investigated. Magnetic carbon nanocomposite, as a novel catalyst, was synthesized and then used in the catalytic ozonation
process (COP) and the effects of operational conditions such as initial pH, reaction time, and initial concentration of phenol on
the degradation efficiency and the toxicity assay have been investigated. The results showed that the highest catalytic potential
was achieved at optimal neutral pH and the removal efficiency of phenol and COD is 98.5% and 69.8%, respectively. First-order
modeling demonstrated that the reactions were dependent on the initial concentration of phenol, with kinetic constants varying
from 0.038 min−1 ([phenol]o = 1500mg/L) to 1.273 min−1 ([phenol]o = 50mg/L). Bioassay analysis showed that phenol was highly
toxic to Daphnia magna (LC50 96 h = 5.6mg/L). Comparison of toxicity units (TU) of row wastewater (36.01) and the treated
effluent showed that TU value, after slightly increasing in the first steps of ozonation for construction of more toxic intermediates,
severely reduced at the end of reaction (2.23).Thus, COP was able to effectively remove the toxicity of intermediates which were
formed during the chemical oxidation of phenolic wastewaters
Baždarno polje U(1) u 6d prostoru-vremenu s nekomutativnim dimenzijama: pristup koherentnih stanja
We consider the U(1) gauge field defined over a six dimensional space-time with extra dimensions compactified on a noncommutative toroidal orbifold, within the context of coherent state approach to the noncommutative spaces. We demonstrate that the fuzzines of extra dimensions can lead to the cancelation of the part of electrostatic interaction mediated by the massive KK modes.Razmatramo baždarno polje U(1) definirano u šest-dimenzijskom prostoru-vremenu s dodatnim dimenzijama i zbijeno u nekomutativnom toroidnom staznom umotu, u svezi pristupa s koherentnim stanjima nekomunitativnim prostorima. Pokazujemo da neodređenost dodatnih dimenzija može voditi poništenju dijela elektrostatskog međudjelovanja koje prenose masivni KK modovi
Dynamics of inflationary cosmology in TVSD model
Within the framework of a model Universe with time variable space dimensions
(TVSD), known as decrumpling or TVSD model, we study TVSD chaotic inflation and
obtain dynamics of the inflaton, scale factor and spatial dimension. We also
study the quantum fluctuations of the inflaton field and obtain the spectral
index and its running in this model. Two classes of examples have been studied
and comparisons made with the standard slow-roll formulae. We compare our
results with the recent Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) data.Comment: 18 pages, 3 figures, accepted in Mod. Phys. Lett.
Chaotic Inflation with Time-Variable Space Dimensions
Assuming the space dimension is not constant but decreases during the
expansion of the Universe, we study chaotic inflation with the potential
. Our investigations are based on a model Universe with variable
space dimensions. We write down field equations in the slow-roll approximation,
and define slow-roll parameters by assuming the number of space dimensions
decreases continuously as the Universe expands. The dynamical character of the
space dimension shifts the initial and final value of the inflaton field to
larger values. We obtain an upper limit for the space dimension at the Planck
length. This result is in agreement with previous works for the effective time
variation of the Newtonian gravitational constant in a model Universe with
variable space dimensions.Comment: 19 pages, To be published in Int.J.Mod.Phys.D. Minor changes to match

Causality between Cash Flow and Earnings: Evidence from Tehran (Iran) Stock Exchange.
This article employs data from 155 companies from 27 different industries listed on the Tehran Stock Exchange (TSE) for the period from 2000 to 2009 to examine the direction of causality between cash flow and earnings after taking consideration of stationarity and co-integration. The results indicate that there is a bidirectional causal relationship between cash flow and earnings at the level of all individual companies, so that cash flow variables caused earning variables and vice versa. However, at the level of industrial sectors, causality exists only between earning before interest and taxation (EBIT) and cash flow from operating activities (CFOA)
California Public Health Departments Remotely Treat Tuberculosis: Outcomes & Opportunities
Background and Purpose: Using video-based directly observed therapy (VDOT) to remotely monitor tuberculosis (TB) patients’ treatment is now a viable option due to the advancement and expansion of technology. This study determined the utilization levels, benefits, barriers, and outcomes of California public health departments using VDOT to treat TB. Methods: Interviews (n=7) with pilot site staff in California and a survey (n=56) were used for data collection. In 2015 the survey was disseminated to attendees of the California Tuberculosis Control Association annual conference. Results: Almost 27 percent (n=15) of survey respondents were using VDOT. Reported benefits were high and centered on patient and provider satisfaction, cost savings, and staff safety. The highest concern was reimbursement, specifically that California’s Medicaid program, Medi-Cal, reimburses for in-person DOT but not VDOT. Conclusion: VDOT is a practical and effective option for providing DOT as it has many benefits with minimal concerns. Reimbursement equal to that of in-person DOT and the continued technological improvements should alleviate the existing hindrances that are currently preventing many health departments from implementing VDOT or expanding their existing program. Satisfaction is high, outcomes are positive, and VDOT is cost effective so efforts should be made to break down the barriers to expansion
Comparison of yolk fatty acid content, blood and egg cholesterol of hens fed diets containing palm olein oil and kilka fish oil
The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of dietary palm olein oil (POO) and Kilka fish oil (KFO) on yolk fatty acid content, ratio of fatty acids (FAs), antibody titre, and blood and yolk cholesterol of laying hens. One hundred White Hy-Line 26-wk-old (W-36) hens were allotted to 6 dietary treatments containing 0, 1.5, 3 and 4.5% POO or 2 and 4% KFO. The FAs and cholesterol content of yolk were measured at the end of three consecutive days of each period. Results reveal that the oleic acid increased and palmitic acid decreased (P<0.05) when hens were fed diets containing POO. The KFO diets reduced the blood cholesterol, yolk linoleic acid and yolk ω-6 FA (P<0.05), whereas the blood cholesterol increased by the supplementation of POO to dietary treatments. The yolk long chain polyunsaturated ω-3 FAs [Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)] increased as KFO was increased in diets (P<0.001). The diets supplementation of KFO and POO thus, showed a decrease and an increase in the ratio of ω-6/ ω-3 FAs (P<0.05), respectively. It is concluded that supplementation of KFO to the dietary treatment may improve deposition of ω-3 FAs; however, the POO supplementation may improve deposition of ω-9 FAs without alteration of yolk cholesterol.Key words: Palm olein oil (POO), Kilka fish oil (KFO), hens, egg omega-9 and omega-3 fatty acid
A new voltage based relay scheme to protect micro-grids dominated by embedded generation using solid state converters
ABSTRACT This paper describes a new relay that uses disturbances in the three phase voltages to provide reliable and fast detection of different types of faults within the micro-grid. The algorithm uses the d-q reference frame to provide a disturbance signal which is used to detect the fault, identify its type and initiate the isolation the faulted section. The paper presents both analysis of the protection and network to demonstrate the operation of the relay and the associated scheme. Simulation results for a variety of different faults within the micro-grid and the network when operating in parallel are included to demonstrate its operation
