    Cytogenetic Studies of Normal and Cleft-Palate Epitheliums in Mice

    This study investigated teratogenic activity on a cellular level through analysis of the cytogenetic complex in cleft-palate epithelial cells from the progenies of mice treated with cortisone.     Interruption of the Arterial Inferior Alveolar Flow and its Effects on Mandibular Collateral Circulation and Dental Tissues

    The interruption of circulation through the inferior alveolar artery was followed by the establishment of a fast retrograde blood flow through the vessel. The mental artery and the mandibular branch of the sublingual artery were the main vessels to contribute to that flow.     Effects of Composite Restorations on the Periodontal Membrane in Monkeys

    We evaluated the histopathological response of the periodontal membrane to intentionolly-replanted teeth carrying composite (experimental) and silver amalgam (control) restorations in the middle third of each root. The study revealed that the amalgam produced, in the periodontal tissues, an initial localized inflammation that subsided with the subsequent formation of a fibrous capsule. However, the periodontal membrane adjacent to the composite resin restorations demonstrated chronic inflammation.     Spontaneous Endoreduplication, Tetraploidy and Chromosome Breakage in Lymphocyte Cultures from Healthy Subjects

    SUMMARY42,703 metaphases of peripheral lymphocytes from 20 healthy subjects (10 women and 10 men) were examined in order to establish the frequency of endoreduplicated cells and of tetraploid cells without diplochromosomes. Frequencies were found to be 0.016% and 0.112%, respectively. The two sexes did not differ as to the frequency of tetraploid cells, with and without diplochromosomes (about 0.13% in either sex). In a total of 2,135 well spread metaphases examined, 26 cells (i.e. 1.2%) with chromosomal breaks were found. Again, no significant differences between the two sexes were found as to such chromosome abnormalities

    Microphotometrical image analysis of the subtelomeric region of T-banded endoreduplicated chromosomes of Chinese hamster ovary cells

    Microphotometrical scanning and computer graphic image analysis were carried out to detect the distribution of chromatin densities in subtelomeric segments of T-banded endoreduplicated chromosomes of Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells. Chromatin density patterns detected with this method were similar to those previously found in CHO and normal human chromosomes. The highest chromatin densities were considered as marker segments which led to the detection of reciprocal changes of position in endoreduplicated chromosomes during cell spreading on the slide. The problem of the subtelomeric T-banding density patterns found in the endoreduplicated chromosomes and their relation to the structure and molecular composition of this region is briefly discussed.<br>Empregaram-se técnicas de escaneamento microfotométrico e análise de imagem gráfica computadorizada para detectar a distribuição de densidades de cromatina em segmentos subteloméricos de cromossomos endo-reduplicados com bandeamento T de células do ovário do hamster chinês (CHO). Os padrões de densidade de cromatina detectados com este método foram similares aos previamente encontrados em CHO e cromossomos humanos normais. As densidades de cromatina mais elevadas foram consideradas como segmentos marcadores que levaram à detecção de alterações recíprocas de posição de cromossomos endo-reduplicados durante o espalhamento das células na lâmina. O problema dos padrões de densidade de bandeamento T subteloméricos encontrados nos cromossomos endo-reduplicados e sua relação com a estrutura e a composição molecular desta região é discutido brevemente

    Permeability of biological and synthetic molecules through dentine

    The diffusion through dentine by a number of biological and synthetic molecules, including resins and dyes, is reported. In vitro measurements were derived by experiments with a modified ‘split-chamber device’. Diffusion was found to be indirectly proportional to dentine thickness for all molecules. Permeability of water-soluble molecules and ethanol-soluble molecules was proportional to the molecular weights, except for fluorescein, hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) and urethane dimethacrylate. The resin components tested are not soluble enough in an aqueous medium to diffuse through 0.5 mm dentine at sufficient concentrations to cause cytotoxicity to pulpal cells.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/71760/1/j.1365-2842.1994.tb01162.x.pd
