    Naltrexone; as an efficient adjuvant in induction of Th1 immunity and protection against Fasciola hepatica infection

    Toxic effects of available therapeutics are major drawbacks for conventional management approaches in parasitic infections. Vaccines have provided a promising opportunity to obviate such unwanted complications. In present study, we examined immune augmenting capacities of an emerging adjuvant, Naltrexone, against Fasciola hepatica infection in BALB/c mice. Seventy BALB/c mice were divided into five experimental groups (14 mice per group) including 1- control (received PBS), 2- vaccine (immunized with F. hepatica E/S antigens), 3- Alum-vaccine (immunized with Alum adjuvant and E/S antigens), 4- NLT-vaccine (immunized with NLT adjuvant and E/S antigens), and 5- Alum-NLT-vaccine (immunized with mixed Alum-NLT adjuvant and E/S antigens). Lymphocyte stimulation index was assessed by MTT assay. Production of IFN-γ, IL-4, IgG2a and IgG1 was assessed by ELISA method. Results showed that NLT, either alone or in combination with alum, can induce immune response toward production of IFN-γ and IgG2a as representatives of Th1 immune response. Also, using this adjuvant in immunization experiment was associated with significantly high proliferative response of splenocytes/lymphocytes. Utilization of mixed Alum-NLT adjuvant revealed the highest protection rate (73.8%) in challenge test of mice infected with F. hepatica. These findings suggest the potential role of NLT as an effective adjuvant in induction of protective cellular and Th1 immune responses against fasciolosis. © 2018 Elsevier Inc

    Effects of probiotic and alpha-lipoic acid supplements, separately or in combination on the anthropometric indicators and maintenance of weight in overweight individuals

    Background & aims: Weight loss after proper diet is one of the main topics in nutrition. This study was designed to evaluate the effects of probiotic and alpha-Lipoic acid (ALA) supplements on the anthropometric indicators and maintenance of weight in overweight individuals. Methods: This study consisted of two phases of weight loss (8 weeks) and weight maintenance (16 weeks). Eighty-eight overweight participants were randomly divided into 4 groups in phase 1: isocaloric diet with probiotic (500 mg), an isocaloric diet with ALA (600 mg) and probiotic, an isocaloric diet with ALA and isocaloric diet with placebo. In phase 2, participants received a normal diet with the mentioned supplements. In the beginning, end of the phase 1, and at the end of phase 2, weight, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), hip circumference (HC), body fat percentage, and blood pressure (BP) were measured. Also, 10 cc blood samples were taken from subjects to measure C-reactive protein (CRP). Data was analyzed using SPSS software. Results: At the end of the two phases, the differences of changes in the probiotic þ ALA group was significant in weight, WC, and CRP factors when compared to the other groups (P < 0.05). Also, at the end of the study, maintain a reduced weight was significantly higher in the probiotic þ ALA group than in the other groups (P < 0.05). Conclusion: According to findings, probiotics and ALA supplementation with normal diet help to maintain decreased weight after adhering to a weight loss diet. This may be due to the reduction of inflammation

    Association of Interleukin 10 And Transforming Growth Factor β Gene Polymorphisms with Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria

    Transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) and interleukin 10 (IL-10) are two anti-inflammatory cytokines that are implicated in the pathogenesis of urticaria. The goal of this study was to examine the possible association of polymorphisms of TGF-β and IL-10 genes with susceptibility to chronic idiopathic urticaria (CIU). This study was conducted on 90 patients with CIU. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was done to determine the genotype at 5 polymorphic sites; TGF-β (codon10C/T and codon25G/C) and IL-10 (-1082G/A, -819C/T, and -592C/A). The C allele at codon 25 of TGF-β was more prevalent in CIU patients compared to controls (OR = 9.5, 95% CI = 5.4-16.8, P<0.001). Genotypes of CT and CG at 10 and 25 codons of TGF-β gene, respectively, and AG, CT, and CA for loci of -1082, -819, and -592 of IL-10 gene were significantly higher in CIU patients (P<0.001). In haplotype analysis, frequency of TGF-β haplotypes differed between patients with CIU and controls; CC haplotype was overrepresented, while CG and TG haplotypes were underrepresented (P<0.001). These results suggest that TGF-β and IL-10 genetic variability could contribute to susceptibility to CIU. Additionally, patients with CIU seem to have genotypes leading to high production of TGF-β and IL-10.</p

    Power system reliability enhancement by using PowerformerTM

    A high-voltage generator PowerformerTM is a new generation of the AC generators. The most significant advantages of these PowerformerTM are their direct connection to high-voltage grid, higher availability, and more reactive power margin, short term overloading capacity and removing the power transformer from the structure of the power plant. In this paper, the installation effect of these generators on the power system reliability is investigated. The amount of the effects depends on the type and location of the power plant, location of the PowerformerTM, the size of load and network topology. For this purpose, in the 6-bus IEEE RBTS system, the conventional generators are replaced by these new PowerformerTM and then, the reliability indices are evaluated. The simulation results show that the reliability indices such as the expected duration of load curtailment (EDLC) and the expected energy not served (EENS) are improved.

    Antinociceptive and Anti-Inflammatory Activities of Teucrium persicum Boiss. Extract in Mice

    Background. Therapeutic properties of Teucrium species as antioxidant, antibacterial, analgesic, anticancer, diuretic, and tonic compounds have been proved earlier. Materials and Methods. In this study, the antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory effects of the aqueous extract of Teucrium persicum on chronic pain, sciatic nerve ligation as a model of neuropathic pain, and inflammatory models were investigated by formalin, hot-plate, and cotton pellet-induced granuloma models in mice, respectively. T. persicum aqueous extracts (100, 200, and 400 mg/kg) were orally gavaged for one week. On 8th day, the time spent and the number of lickings were recorded in formalin test. Morphine and Diclofenac were used intraperitoneally as positive controls. In sciatic nerve ligated animals, as a model of neuropathic pain, doses (100, 200, and 400 mg/kg) of T. persicum extract (TPE) were orally gavaged for 14 consecutive days. The analgesic effect of this extract was examined 14 days after sciatic nerve ligation using the hot-plate test. Controls received saline and Imipramine (40 mg/kg, i.p.) was used a positive control for neuropathic pain model. Results. In the formalin test, a week oral gavage of all TPE doses (100, 200, and 400 mg/kg) caused a significant decrease on the licking response compared to the control negative animals. In the hot-plate test, doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg showed significant analgesic effects in sciatic nerve ligated animals. Oral gavaged of TPE revealed significant analgesic effect on chronic pain in both formalin test and sciatic nerve ligated animals. The TPEs did not have any significant anti-inflammatory effects in cotton pellet-induced granuloma formation in mice. Conclusions. These results suggest that the aqueous extract from T. persicum Boiss. produced antinociceptive effects. Its exact mechanism of action still remains indistinct

    The effect of fine motor activities on development of visual-perceptual skills in individuals with Down syndrome

    Introduction: The development of visual-perceptual skills in children with Down syndrome (DS) is usually significantly delayed. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of fine motor activities on the development of visual-perceptual skills in individuals with DS.  Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, a convenience sample of 18 Down syndrome subjects, aged from 9 to 13 years, were first recruited from an accessible population and then randomly assigned to the intervention or control groups so that the two groups had an equal number of participants. The subjects in the intervention group completed a 24-session program of regular fine motor activities. The Test of Visual-Perceptual Skills-Revised (TVPS-R) was administered before and after the intervention phase. Kolmogorov-Smirnov, independent t, paired t and chi-square tests were used for statistical analysis of the obtained data.  Results: Comparing the pre-treatment results with those achieved after the intervention phase, the intervention group but not the control group showed a significant difference (P < 0.05 and P = 0.095, respectively). Moreover, there was a significant difference between the two groups after intervention period (P = 0.014).  Conclusion: Fine motor activities were effective in enhancing visual-perceptual skills in individuals with DS and this should be considered in the favor of the necessity of administering fine motor intervention programs for this population of children and of educating their parents.  Keywords: Down syndrome, Visual-perceptual Skills, Fine motor skill

    Modifying effect of imidazolium-based ionic liquids on surface activity and self-assembled nanostructures of sodium dodecyl sulfate

    The effect of four cationic ionic liquids (ILs), 1-butyl-3- methylimidazolium chloride (BMImCl), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide (BMImBr), 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (HMImCl), and 1-hexyl-3-methyl-imidazolium bromide (HMImBr) on surface activity and micellization of an anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), is studied. The thermodynamic data on micellization and surface adsorption are obtained from tensiometry and conductometry. The applicability of UV-visible spectroscopy to study of SDS/IL systems is also investigated using Crystal Violet as the probe. Cyclic voltammetry, dynamic light scattering, and TEM imaging are employed to investigate the size and morphology of aggregates. According to the findings, addition of butyl-chained ILs to aqueous SDS results in only a slight gradual increase in average aggregate size whereas the size of SDS assemblies are dramatically increased upon addition of hexyl-chained ILs. It is proposed that BMIm+ cations of the IL undergo Coulombic attractive interactions with anionic headgroups adsorbed at the micellar surface in aqueous SDS whereas HMIm+ interact through hydrophobic chain-chain attractions as well. Thus, mixed micellization results in formation of vesicles. A micellar phase change from vesicles to micelles takes place at higher [SDS]/[IL] ratios.
