Faceted anomalous scaling in the epitaxial growth of semiconductor films
We apply the generic dynamical scaling theory (GDST) to the surfaces of CdTe
polycrystalline films grown in glass substrates. The analysed data were
obtained with a stylus profiler with an estimated resolution lateral resolution
of m. Both real two-point correlation function and power spectrum
analyses were done. We found that the GDST applied to the surface power spectra
foresees faceted morphology in contrast with the self-affine surface indicated
by the local roughness exponent found via the height-height correlation
function. This inconsistency is explained in terms of convolution effects
resulting from the finite size of the probe tip used to scan the surfaces. High
resolution AFM images corroborates the predictions of GDST.Comment: to appear in Europhysics Letter
Single and Double Photoionization and Photodissociation of Toluene by Soft X-rays in Circumstellar Environment
The formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their methyl
derivatives occurs mainly in the dust shells of asymptotic giant branch (AGB)
stars. The bands at 3.3 and 3.4 m, observed in infrared emission spectra
of several objects, are attributed C-H vibrational modes in aromatic and
aliphatic structures, respectively. In general, the feature at 3.3 m is
more intense than the 3.4 m. Photoionization and photodissociation
processes of toluene, the precursor of methylated PAHs, were studied using
synchrotron radiation at soft X-ray energies around the carbon K edge with
time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Partial ion yields of a large number of ionic
fragments were extracted from single and 2D-spectra, where electron-ion
coincidences have revealed the doubly charged parent-molecule and several
doubly charged fragments containing seven carbon atoms with considerable
abundance. \textit{Ab initio} calculations based on density functional theory
were performed to elucidate the chemical structure of these stable dicationic
species. The survival of the dications subjected to hard inner shell ionization
suggests that they could be observed in the interstellar medium, especially in
regions where PAHs are detected. The ionization and destruction of toluene
induced by X-rays were examined in the T Dra conditions, a carbon-rich AGB
star. In this context, a minimum photodissociation radius and the half-life of
toluene subjected to the incidence of the soft X-ray flux emitted from a

Non-hexagonal-ring defects and structures induced by strain in graphene and in functionalized graphene
We perform {\textit ab initio} calculations for the strain-induced formation
of non-hexagonal-ring defects in graphene, graphane (planar CH), and graphenol
(planar COH). We find that the simplest of such topological defects, the
Stone-Wales defect, acts as a seed for strain-induced dissociation and
multiplication of topological defects. Through the application of inhomogeneous
deformations to graphene, graphane and graphenol with initially small
concentrations of pentagonal and heptagonal rings, we obtain several novel
stable structures that possess, at the same time, large concentrations of
non-hexagonal rings (from fourfold to elevenfold) and small formation energies
On the one-loop effective potential in the higher-derivative four-dimensional chiral superfield theory with a nonconventional kinetic term
We explicitly calculate the one-loop effective potential for a
higher-derivative four-dimensional chiral superfield theory with a
nonconventional kinetic term. We consider the cases of minimal and nonminimal
general Lagrangians. In particular, we find that in the minimal case the
divergent part of the one-loop effective potential vanishes by reason of the

Five-Dimensional QED, Muon Pair Production and Correction to the Coulomb Potential
We consider QED in five dimensions in a configuration where matter is
localized on a 3-brane while foton propagates in the bulk. The idea is to
investigate the effects of the Kaluza-Klein modes of the photon in the
relativistic regime, but in low energy, and in the nonrelativistic regime. In
the relativistic regime, we calculate the cross section for the reaction . We compare our theoretical result with a precise
measurement of this cross section at GeV. As result, we
extract a lower bound on the size of the extra dimension. In the
nonrelativistic regime, we derive the contribution for the Coulomb potential
due to the whole tower of the Kaluza-Klein excited modes of the photon. We use
the modified potential to calculate the Rutherford scattering differential

Favorable outcome of total hip arthroplasty with insufficient bone coverage of the roof reinforcement ring: a case report
A 59-year-old male patient underwent a total hip arthroplasty for the treatment of end-stage dysplastic osteoarthritis. A roof reinforcement ring, a cemented polyethylene cup, and a cementless stem were used. Extensive superolateral portion of the ring was uncovered by host bone. Morsellized autogenous femoral-head graft was impacted to fill the space between superolateral border of the ring and superior part of the dysplastic acetabulum.
At the follow-up after 4-years, the patient had no complaints and was very satisfied with the operation result. The hip radiograph revealed no signs of instability of the acetabular component, and no bone graft resorption. Despite the suboptimal implantation of the ring compromising, apparently, mechanical stability of the prosthesis, the outcome was favorable. This result can be supported by the fixation of the metal ring with screws, the adequate orientation of the prosthesis, the position of hip´s center of rotation, and bone graft incorporation
