Textbook of Oyster Biology and Culture in India
Oysters are bivalve molluscs occurring worldwide in temperate, subtropical and tropical seas. Generally they inhabit the coastal waters.
Certain species of oysters also occur in lagoons, estuaries and backwaters. They are endowed with a pelagic larval life which ensures wider distribution. The larvae settle on hard substrates such as rocks, molluscan shells or on firm bottom areas, undergo metamorphosis and lead sedentary life. Oysters are filter feeders, feed low in the food chain and playa crucial role in the coastal ecosystem. The soft body parts of the oyster are enclosed within two shells which protect the animal from external disturbances. Oyster meat is nutritious and rich in protein and mineral
Candidate species, other than shrimps for coastal aquaculture
Aquaculture is practised in three types of environments namely in freshwater, brackishwater and in the
sea. The term 'Coastal aquaculture' is widely used to denote aquaculture in the coastal areas and comprises
both brackishwater farming and mariculture. It is either land-based or sea-based and the latter is pop'ularly
.known as sea farming
Environmental impacts of coastal aquaculture development
Management measures to mitigate deteriorating water quality/ and
the adverse environmental impacts of aquaculture development are
to be dealt with as a priority area and a holistic approach is needed.
Environmental baseline studies are necessary to establish and assess
environmental quality and to be able to quantify this quality in
economic terms
Experimental culture of the Indian oyster, Crassostrea madrasensis (Preston) at Ashtamudi lake, Kerala
The edible oyster,
Crassostrea Madrasensis, (P reston)
occurs attached to hard substrates
in the intertidal and subtidal regions
of the coastal areas. Oyster
meat is a highly esteemed seafood
and aquaculture of oysters is widely
prevalent and well established in
many temperate countri
Production of Intermediate or Medium Carbon Ferro Chrome at FACOR
FACOR has foreseen the need to develop the intermediate carbon ferro chrome alloy to meet the demands of alloy and stainless steel manufacturers. The paper describes the decarbonisation of liquid high carbon ferro chrome in. an AOD convertor with respect to : (a) Theoretical
aspects and fundamentals, (b) Plant and equipment, (c) Process of making intermediate carbon ferro chromium., (d) Advantages of the processto improve the quality with respect to titanium, silicon, hydrogen and nitrogen in intermediate carbon ferro chromium
On the widths of K levels of heavy elements
The ratios of the widths of K levels of heavy elements with atomic number 70 to 92 have been calculated with relativistic wave functions, retardation, screening and field theoretical corrections to relativistic energy. The calculated values have been compared with the available observed data and good agreement has been obtained
Molluscan shellfish resources of India - An overview
Several groups of molluscan ahellfish such as cephalopods comprising squids and cuttlefishes;
bivalves like pearl oysters, edible oysters, mussels, clams and windowpone oyster; and gastropods
represented by diank, top shell, turbo shell and a variety of ornamental species contribute to the marine
fisheries of the country. This paper gives a synoptic picture of the available information about these
resources, their distribution, exploitation, produdion and stock assessment. Suggestions for developing
these resources are also given
