    Industrial dynamics, fiscal policy and R&D: evidence from a computational experiment

    We present an agent-based computational model in which bounded rational firms and workers trade on fully decentralized markets for final goods and labor by means of random matching protocols. The model replicates several macroeconomic phenomena regularly observed in the data, with aggregate features emerging from the localized interactions of individual entities. The model is then used as a computational laboratory to run an experiment on the role of fiscal policy in increasing macroeconomic performance

    First serological evidence of SARS-CoV-2 natural infection in small ruminants : Brief report

    : Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) emerged in late December 2019 and spread worldwide, quickly becoming a pandemic. This zoonotic coronavirus shows a broad host range, including wildlife and domestic animals. Small ruminants are shown to be susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 but, to date, no natural infection has been reported. Herein, we performed a survey for SARS-CoV-2 among sheep and goats in the Campania region of Italy using an indirect multispecies ELISA. Next, positive sera were submitted to virus serum neutralization for the quantification of specific neutralizing antibodies. Out of 612 sheep and goats, 23 were found ELISA positive (3.75%) and 1 of them showed 1:20 neutralizing antibodies titer. No significant difference was found between the two species, as well as between male and female, geographical location and age. Our findings demonstrate that natural infection can occur in flocks in a field situation. Moreover, low susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 is reported for sheep and goats, nevertheless, the continuous mutations of this virus open new scenarios on viral host range and tropism, highlighting the importance of investigating animal species that could represent ongoing or future possible hosts

    Acute ischemic stroke with cervical internal carotid artery steno-occlusive lesion: multicenter analysis of endovascular approaches

    open14noBackground Occlusions of internal carotid artery (ICA), whether isolated or in tandem lesions (TL) have a poor response to treatment with intravenous thrombolysis. Previous studies ​​have demonstrated the superiority of mechanical thrombectomy in the treatment of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) following large vessel occlusion, compared to standard intravenous fibrinolysis. The aim of our study was to describe endovascular treatment (EVT) in AIS due to ICA occlusion, whether isolated or in TL. Methods we assessed the association between 90-day outcome and clinical, demographic, imaging and procedure data in 51 consecutive patients with acute isolated ICA or TL occlusion who underwent endovascular treatment (EVT). We evaluated baseline NIHSS and mRS, ASPECTS, type of occlusion, stent placement, use of stent retrievers and/or thromboaspiration, duration of the procedure, mTICI, procedural therapy and complications. Results A favorable 90-day outcome (mRS 0–2) was achieved in 34 patients (67%) and was significantly associated with the use of dual antiplatelet therapy after the procedure (p = 0.008), shorter procedure duration (p = 0.031), TICI 2b-3 (p < 0.001) and lack of post-procedural hemorrhagic transformation (p = 0.001). Four patients did not survive, resulting in a mortality rate of 8% Conclusions EVT in the treatment of AIS due to ICA occlusion is safe and effective; mortality rates are in agreement with the current literature.     Magnetocaloric effect in the intermetallic compound Gd7Pd3

    As a part of a current research concerning the physical characterisation of Rare Earth intermetallic compounds for magnetic refrigeration devices, the magnetocaloric properties of the Gd7Pd3 phase, which shows a ferromagnetic transition at 318 K, are presented. Heat capacity measurements have been performed in the 5-360 K temperature range and for applied magnetic fields up to 5 T (Tesla). Basing on the heat capacity data the isothermal entropy change DeltaS(M) and the adiabatic temperature rise DeltaT(ad) have been calculated (DeltaS(M) = 2.5 and 6.5 J/K kg and DeltaT(ad) = 3.0 and 8.5 K at 320 K and respectively at 2 and 5 T). From the DeltaS(M) vs. T plot the refrigerant capacity in the 260-360 K temperature range has been calculated to be 100 J/kg for an applied magnetic field of 2 T and 380 J/kg for an applied magnetic field of 5 T

    Physical properties of Ce2CoSn2

    A complete physical characterisation, through specific heat, electrical resistivity and magnetization measurements was performed, in a wide temperature range on the new phase Ce2CoSn7, which crystallizes in a very large fee cell with a structure type similar to the Tb117Fe52Ge112 one. From the real part of the AC susceptibility data a broad maximum call be observed at 7 K with an inflexion point, hi agreement with the maximum observed in the imaginary part of the AC susceptibility, at a lower temperature (around 6 K). We hypothesize that the lower maximum can be attributed to an antiferromagnetic transition while the upper one could be related to the onset of a Kondo regime, ale antiferromagnetic order is confirmed by magnetization measurements performed at 2 K in magnetic fields up to 9 Tesla: a metamagnetic transition could be observed around 0.4 Tesla. In the paramagnetic range the inverse of susceptibility follows a modified Curie-Weiss law, with an effective paramagnetic moment mu =2.89 mu (B) and a paramagnetic Curie temperature slightly positive. The heat capacity results suggest that this phase might be a heavy fermion system, with an electronic specific heat coefficient gamma =1.3 J/K-2 mel. The electrical resistivity measurements exhibit a pronounced minimum at about 13 It and below this temperature a logarithmic Kondo-like behaviour is observed
