    The Distribution of Redshifts in New Samples of Quasi-stellar Objects

    Two new samples of QSOs have been constructed from recent surveys to test the hypothesis that the redshift distribution of bright QSOs is periodic in log⁥(1+z)\log(1+z). The first of these comprises 57 different redshifts among all known close pairs or multiple QSOs, with image separations ≀\leq 10\arcsec, and the second consists of 39 QSOs selected through their X-ray emission and their proximity to bright comparatively nearby active galaxies. The redshift distributions of the samples are found to exhibit distinct peaks with a periodic separation of ∌0.089\sim 0.089 in log⁥(1+z)\log(1+z) identical to that claimed in earlier samples but now extended out to higher redshift peaks z=2.63,3.45z = 2.63, 3.45 and 4.47, predicted by the formula but never seen before. The periodicity is also seen in a third sample, the 78 QSOs of the 3C and 3CR catalogues. It is present in these three datasets at an overall significance level 10−510^{-5} - 10−610^{-6}, and appears not to be explicable by spectroscopic or similar selection effects.     The Structure of Rapidly Rotating Late-Type Spiral Galaxies: I. Photometry, HI and Optical Kinematics

    We present I-band photometry, long-slit optical spectroscopy, and new aperture synthesis HI observations for eight late-type spirals with rotation velocities in the range 243 km/s < V_{rot} < 308 km/s. The sample will be used to study the structure and angular momentum of disks at the high-mass end of the spiral galaxy population; here we discuss the basic properties of these ``fast rotators'', and derive hybrid optical/HI rotation curves for each. Despite the presence of HI warps and low-mass companions in many systems, their kinematics are regular and there is excellent agreement between optical and HI tracers near the optical radius r_{opt}. At high inclinations at which projection effects are negligible, the sample galaxies exhibit flat, featureless rotation curves out to their last measured points at 1.7r_{opt}--3.5 r_{opt}. The intermediate inclination systems are also consistent with a constant rotation amplitude for r > 0.5 r_{opt}. We therefore find no evidence for declining rotation curves at the high-mass end of the late-type spiral galaxy population. Combining our data with the compilation of spirals with reliable outer HI kinematics from the work of Casertano & van Gorkom, we find no convincing trends between logarithmic outer rotation curve slopes and rotation amplitudes or surface brightnesses for galaxies with V_{rot} > 220 km/s.     Facilitating Lewin\u27s change model with collaborative evaluation in promoting evidence based practices of health professionals

    Evidence based practices (EBPs) in clinical settings interact with and adapt to host organizational characteristics. The contextual factors themselves, surrounding health professions’ practices, also adapt as practices become sustained. The authors assert the need for better planning models toward these contextual factors, the influence of which undergird a well-documented science to practice gap in literature on EBPs. The mechanism for EBP planners to anticipate contextual effects as programs Unfreeze their host settings, create Movement, and become Refrozen (Lewin, 1951) is present in Lewin\u27s 3-step change model. Planning for contextual change appears equally important as planning for the actual practice outcomes among providers and patients. Two case studies from a Geriatric Education Center network will illustrate the synthesis of Lewin\u27s three steps with collaborative evaluation principles. The use of the model may become an important tool for continuing education evaluators or organizations beginning a journey toward EBP demonstration projects in clinical settings

    Chandra Observation of the Globular Cluster NGC 6440 and the Nature of Cluster X-ray Luminosity Functions

    As part of our campaign to determine the nature of the various source populations of the low-luminosity globular cluster X-ray sources, we have obtained a Chandra X-ray Observatory ACIS-S3 image of the globular cluster NGC 6440. We detect 24 sources to a limiting luminosity of ~2 times 10^31 erg/s (0.5-2.5keV) inside the cluster's half-mass radius, all of which lie within ~2 core radii of the cluster center. We also find excess emission in and around the core which could be due to unresolved point sources. Based upon X-ray luminosities and colors, we conclude that there are 4-5 likely quiescent low-mass X-ray binaries and that most of the other sources are cataclysmic variables. We compare these results to Chandra results from other globular clusters and find the X-ray luminosity functions differ among the clusters.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, accepted by ApJ, minor changes, added table of clusters' physical parameter

    Departures From Axisymmetric Morphology and Dynamics in Spiral Galaxies

    New HI synthesis data have been obtained for six face-on galaxies with the Very Large Array. These data and reanalyses of three additional data sets make up a sample of nine face-on galaxies analyzed for deviations from axisymmetry in morphology and dynamics. This sample represents a subsample of galaxies already analyzed for morphological symmetry properties in the R-band. Four quantitative measures of dynamical nonaxisymmetry are compared to one another and to the quantitative measures of morphological asymmetry in HI and R-band to investigate the relationships between nonaxisymmetric morphology and dynamics. We find no significant relationship between asymmetric morphology and most of the dynamical measures in our sample.     ‘Blood, guts and Bambi eyes’ : Urotsukidoji and the Transcultural Reception and Regulation of Anime

    The regulation and reception of anime in Britain has, historically, been fraught with difficulty. In 1992, the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) rejected the first instalment of Urotsukidoji, a controversial series of erotic anime, on the grounds of its sexually explicit content; this decision set a precedent for the way in which they would continue to censor anime for the following two decades. Nearly twenty years later, in 2009, Clause 62 of the Coroners and Justice Act, also colloquially known as the ‘Dangerous Cartoons Act’, made it a criminal offence to possess non-photographic pornographic images of children, including CGI, cartoons, manga images and drawings. Through an examination of the BBFC's archival materials on Urotsukidoji – Legend of the Overfiend, supplemented by references to a small number of newspaper articles published during this period, this article offers a range of insights into the historical context in which the current series of debates surrounding the ‘Dangerous Cartoons Act’ can be situated and assessed. These are used to consider the transcultural flow of genres across national borders, and the difficulties that a regulator from one culture encounters when dealing with controversial material originating from another, such as Japan, that has a substantially different set of social values and artistic conventions. Furthermore, this case highlights the important role played by distribution companies in shaping the production and evolution of genres within the transcultural marketplace
