The primary objective of this study was to develop an overview of the trends of male and female enrollment in nine selected 4-H projects in Tennessee from 1969 through 1981. The nine project areas of study were: (1) dairy, (2) corn, (3) home grounds, (4) electric, (5) tractor, (6) clothing, (7) home improvement, (8) public speaking, and (9) bread. Data for this study were obtained from the Tennessee Annual 4-H Youth Enrollment Reports from 1969 through 1981. Data from the reports were organized in tables and figures. The major findings of the study were as follows: The number of males enrolled from 1969 through 1981 decreased in the dairy, corn, home grounds, electric, tractor, and home improvement projects. Increases in the number of males enrolled from 1969 through 1981 were reported in the clothing, public speaking, and bread projects. Enrollment of females from 1969 through 1981 decreased in the dairy, corn, home grounds, electric, clothing, home improvement, and bread projects. The number of females enrolled from 1969 through 1981 increased in the tractor and public speaking projects. Implications and recommendations for further study were included

Information-processing skills related to working memory in individuals with Asperger\u27s disorder

The present study examined information-processing (IP) deficits specific to the ability of individuals with Asperger\u27s disorder (AD) to interpret and respond to nonverbal and verbal information inherent in social relationships as it relates to working memory capacity. Sixty boys between the ages of 11.0 and 15.7 years (30 diagnosed with AD [Group A], and 30 typically developing, same-age peers [Group T]) were assessed using the Working Memory Test Battery for Children (WMTB-C). The present study combined theories from cognitive, neurological, and clinical psychology, isolated specific working memory components, and identified a connection between working memory capacity and the social skill deficiencies of individuals with AD. Three working memory scores (i.e., verbal [PL], visual-spatial [VSSP], and complex [CE]) were compared between the two groups using ANOVA. All working memory differences examined between the two groups in the present study were statistically different. The effect sizes of differences between Groups A and T for PL, VSSP, and CE were .397, .279, and .627, respectively. The results of the present study support the hypothesis that working memory is a specific IP deficit of individuals with AD. Findings suggest that by targeting remedial efforts to enhance working memory capacity, individuals with AD can more effectively engage in complex IP tasks, participate in reciprocal social interactions, and thereby create social change. Future research needs to expand upon the connection between working memory capacity and the social deficiencies of individuals with Asperger\u27s disorder

The Balkanization of the High School Reading Specialist: Searching for an Identity

There is a lack of research on how Wisconsin\u27s high schools are addressing the literacy needs of their students. State Statute 118.015 requires a district reading specialist, but there has been very little research done on compliance; therefore, the first phase of the study was to collect and analyze both demographic and descriptive data via a survey to determine compliance with the Statute, focusing specifically on the secondary level. It is argued that a careful, in-depth study on the role of the secondary reading specialist is needed to understand the current use of professionals in this role. While there is a dearth of research on the role, the research that does exist demonstrates the lack of consistency in role definition. Thus, the second phase of this research was to construct a case study of the role of a reading specialist, Donna, in the context of the high school. The goal was to develop a deep and rich understanding of her role. A qualitative research design was used because the use of an inductive approach was best suited to the development of a case study. The study was conducted using the constant comparative method in which interviews and observations provided the basis for further investigation and elaboration. Key themes and sub-themes were identified through inductive analysis. Four major themes emerged. The first is the lack of compliance with State Statute 118.015. The three others are the lack of definitive licensure for the evolving role of the high school reading specialist into that of coach, the lack of clear definitions and role responsibilities, and the importance of features that distinguish high schools from elementary or middle schools, thus making them unique. The present study explores the theoretical shift taking place in the role of the reading specialist in reading and literacy in the 21st century, from an intervention focus to a more broadly defined, schoolwide, professional development model. The results of this study indicate that this shift is resulting in a wide variety of opinions as to the direction of the role; thus, this balkanization is prohibiting a clear definition and understanding of the role of the reading specialist at the high school level. The implications of the survey and case study data for students, teachers and schools are discussed, including suggestions for future research

The Relationship Between Professional Quality Life, Coping Mechanisms, and Mental Fortitude

The health and mental fortitude of individuals enforcing policy and law is important to communities, agencies, and families. This helping profession is plagued by high suicide rates, maladaptive coping, and other negative health-related ailments. The present study used the DRS 15-R, ProQOL, RS-14, and BriefCOPE scales across 315 participants in order to investigate coping mechanisms and professional quality of life facets among individuals enforcing policy and law. It revealed multiple statistically significant relationships using multiple linear regression, hierarchical linear regression, and binary logistic regression. Emotion-focused coping techniques and compassion satisfaction both possessed statistically significant direct relationships with resilience and hardiness. Less productive coping techniques and burnout both exhibited statistically significant indirect relationships with hardiness. Burnout and less productive coping practices showed statistically significant indirect relationships with resilience. Compassion satisfaction exhibited a statistically significant direct relationship with rigid control, and burnout showed a statistically significant indirect relationship. Secondary traumatic stress symptoms were found to have a statistically significant indirect relationship with rigid control. The results may be used by law enforcement to manage stress in healthier ways which can benefit families, as well as decrease sick time, maladaptive patterns escalating into self-harm, and the intangible and tangible costs of workforce turnover rates

Patrick Henry and John Jay: True Patriots and Advocates for Civil and Religious Liberty

    Get PDF
Patrick Henry and John Jay had a significant impact in the founding of the United States of America as two of the principal and most influential Founders. They were also among the most public Christians of all the Founding Fathers. Their dedication in their fight for civic and religious freedom as a means to maintaining liberty was well-known. Despite these similarities, they opposed each other on most every major issue. Each envisioned different governments in which to obtain liberty and to keep the American republic. This thesis seeks to explore the differences and similarities between Henry, as a leader of the Anti-Federalists, and Jay, as a leader of the Federalists, in order to highlight some of the major issues throughout the founding period given their close religious similarity when American evangelicalism was in its infancy
