    Emotion-Related Regulation: An Emerging Construct

    Emotion-related regulation is a topic of considerable current interest; however, this was not always true. We briefly discuss the history of interest in the topic and then the current state of the field, including definitions of the construct. In addition, we summarize some of the important issues for future attention, including definitional issues, topics that merit attention, and methodological and design issues. This field of inquiry is flourishing, but it is one that is rapidly expanding and improving in the quality of the research

    Cognitive Processes and Prosocial Behaviors Among Children: The Role of Affective Attributions and Reconciliations

    Although attributions about others’ sad emotions have been shown to be positively related to helping behavior, there have been considerable inconsistencies in the findings. This study was designed to investigate the relations of affective attributions, affective reconciliations, and cognitive perspective-taking measures to prosocial behavior. Eighty-nine preschool through second grade children were administered various social cognition indices (two affective and one cognitive); the children were then given an opportunity to help a same-sex confederate child obtain toys. Helping that required a specific form of affective attribution and reconciliation was signifi cantly related to the affective attribution and reconciliation measures when the demands required by the helping opportunity “matched” the social cognition measure demands. The findings are discussed in terms of the need to reconceptualize the relations between social cognitive skills and helping

    Fomite-mediated transmission as a sufficient pathway: a comparative analysis across three viral pathogens

    Abstract Background Fomite mediated transmission can be an important pathway causing significant disease transmission in number of settings such as schools, daycare centers, and long-term care facilities. The importance of these pathways relative to other transmission pathways such as direct person-person or airborne will depend on the characteristics of the particular pathogen and the venue in which transmission occurs. Here we analyze fomite mediated transmission through a comparative analysis across multiple pathogens and venues. Methods We developed and analyzed a compartmental model that explicitly accounts for fomite transmission by including pathogen transfer between hands and surfaces. We consider two sub-types of fomite-mediated transmission: direct fomite (e.g., shedding onto fomites) and hand-fomite (e.g., shedding onto hands and then contacting fomites). We use this model to examine three pathogens with distinct environmental characteristics (influenza, rhinovirus, and norovirus) in four venue types. To parameterize the model for each pathogen we conducted a thorough literature search. Results Based on parameter estimates from the literature the reproductive number ( R 0 R0\mathcal {R}_{0} ) for the fomite route for rhinovirus and norovirus is greater than 1 in nearly all venues considered, suggesting that this route can sustain transmission. For influenza, on the other hand, R 0 R0\mathcal {R}_{0} for the fomite route is smaller suggesting many conditions in which the pathway may not sustain transmission. Additionally, the direct fomite route is more relevant than the hand-fomite route for influenza and rhinovirus, compared to norovirus. The relative importance of the hand-fomite vs. direct fomite route for norovirus is strongly dependent on the fraction of pathogens initially shed to hands. Sensitivity analysis stresses the need for accurate measurements of environmental inactivation rates, transfer efficiencies, and pathogen shedding. Conclusions Fomite-mediated transmission is an important pathway for the three pathogens examined. The effectiveness of environmental interventions differs significantly both by pathogen and venue. While fomite-based interventions may be able to lower R 0 R0\mathcal {R}_{0} for fomites below 1 and interrupt transmission, rhinovirus and norovirus are so infectious ( R 0 > > 1 R0>>1\mathcal {R}_{0}>>1 ) that single environmental interventions are unlikely to interrupt fomite transmission for these pathogens.https://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/146145/1/12879_2018_Article_3425.pd

    Assessing Perceived Empathic and Social Self-Efficacy Across Countries

    The Perceived Empathic Self-Efficacy Scale (PESE) and the Perceived Social Self-Efficacy Scale (PSSE) were developed to assess, respectively, individuals' self-efficacy beliefs regarding both empathic responding to others' needs or feelings and managing interpersonal relationships. In this study of young adults, a unidimensional factorial structure of both scales was found in Italy, the United States, and Bolivia. Complete invariance at the metric level and partial invariance at the scalar level were found across gender and countries for both scales. The construct and incremental validity of both PESE and PSSE were further examined in a different sample of Italian young adults. Patterns of association of the PESE or PSSE with self-esteem, psychological well-being, and the use of adaptive and maladaptive coping strategies were found, often over and beyond their associations with empathy or extraversion, respectively

    Developmental trajectories of physical aggression: prediction of overt and covert antisocial behaviors from self- and mothers’ reports

    "Physical aggression declines for the majority of children from preschool to elementary school. Although this desistance generally continues during adolescence and early adulthood, a small group of children maintain a high level of physical aggression over time and develop other serious overt and covert antisocial behaviors. Typically, researchers have examined relations of developmental changes in physical aggression to later violence with teachers’ or mothers’ reports on surveys. Little is known about the degree to which children’s self-reported physical aggression predicts later antisocial behavior. The longitudinal study in this article had a staggered, multiple cohort design. Measures of physical aggression were collected through self- and mother reports from age 11–14 years, which were used to construct trajectory groups (attrition was 6 and 14% from age 11–14, respectively, for self- and mother reports). Overt and covert antisocial behaviors were self-reported at age 18–19 years (attrition was 36% from age 11 to 18–19). Four trajectory groups (low stable, 11%; moderate-low declining, 34%; moderate declining, 39%; high stable, 16%) were identified from self-reports, whereas three trajectories (low declining, 33%; moderate declining, 49%; high stable, 18%) were identified from mothers’ ratings. We examined the prediction of overt and covert antisocial behaviors in early adulthood from the high stable and the moderate declining trajectories. According to both informants, higher probability of belonging to the high stable group was associated with higher overt and covert antisocial behavior, whereas higher probability of belonging to the moderate declining group was associated with higher covert antisocial behavior. Our results support the value of children’s as well as mothers’ reports of children’s aggression for predicting different types of serious antisocial behavior in adulthood." [author's abstract

    Phenotypic variations in persistence and infectivity between and within environmentally transmitted pathogen populations impact population-level epidemic dynamics

    Abstract Background Human pathogens transmitted through environmental pathways are subject to stress and pressures outside of the host. These pressures may cause pathogen pathovars to diverge in their environmental persistence and their infectivity on an evolutionary time-scale. On a shorter time-scale, a single-genotype pathogen population may display wide variation in persistence times and exhibit biphasic decay. Methods We use a transmission modeling framework to develop an infectious disease model with biphasic pathogen decay. We take a differential algebra approach to assessing model identifiability, calculate basic reproduction numbers by the next generation method, and use simulation to explore model dynamics. Results For both long and short time-scales, we demonstrate that epidemic-potential-preserving trade-offs have implications for epidemic dynamics: less infectious, more persistent pathogens cause epidemics to progress more slowly than more infectious, less persistent (labile) pathogens, even when the overall risk is the same. Using identifiability analysis, we show that the usual disease surveillance data does not sufficiently inform these underlying pathogen population dynamics, even when combined with basic environmental monitoring data. However, risk could be indirectly ascertained by developing methods to separately monitor labile and persistent subpopulations. Alternatively, determining the relative infectivity of persistent pathogen subpopulations and the rates of phenotypic conversion will help ascertain how much disease risk is associated with the long tails of biphasic decay. Conclusion A better understanding of persistence–infectivity trade-offs and associated dynamics can improve our ecological understanding of environmentally transmitted pathogens, as well as our risk assessment and disease control strategies.https://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/149181/1/12879_2019_Article_4054.pd

    Crystallization of a designed peptide from a molten globule ensemble

    Backgound:The design of amino acid sequences that adopt a desired three-dimensional fold has been of keen interest over the past decade. However, the design of proteins that adopt unique conformations is still a considerable problem. Until very recently, all of the designed proteins that have been extensively characterized possess the hallmarks of the molten globular state. Molten globular intermediates have been observed in both equilibrium and kinetic protein folding/stability studies, and understanding the forces that determine compact non-native states is critical for a comprehensive understanding of proteins. This paper describes the solution and early solid state characterization of peptides that form molten globular ensembles.Results & Conclusions:Crystals diffracting to 3.5å resolution have been grown of a 16-residue peptide (α1A) designed to form a tetramer of α-helices. In addition, a closely related peptide, α1, has previously been shown to yield crystals that diffract to 1.2å resolution. The solution properties of these two peptides were examined to determine whether their well defined crystalline conformations were retained in solution. On the basis of an examination of their NMR spectra, sedimentation equilibria, thermal unfolding, and ANS binding, it is concluded that the peptides form α-helical aggregates with properties similar to those of the molten globule state. Thus, for these peptides, the process of crystallization bears many similarities to models of protein folding. Upon dissolution, the peptides rapidly assume compact molten globular states similar to the molten globule like intermediates that are formed at short times after refolding is initiated. Following a rate-determining nucleation step, the peptides crystallize into a single or a small number of conformations in a process that mimics the formation of native structure in proteins
