Finite N Index and Angular Momentum Bound from Gravity

We exactly compute the finite N index and BPS partition functions for N=4 SYM theory in a newly proposed maximal angular momentum limit. The new limit is not predicted from the superconformal algebra, but naturally arises from the supergravity dual. We show that the index does not receive any finite N corrections while the free BPS partition function does.Comment: 14 pages, v2: minor revisions, published versio

Superfield Formulation for Non-Relativistic Chern-Simons-Matter Theory

We construct a superfield formulation for non-relativistic Chern-Simons-Matter theories with manifest dynamical supersymmetry. By eliminating all the auxiliary fields, we show that the simple action reduces to the one obtained by taking non-relativistic limit from the relativistic Chern-Simons-Matter theory proposed in the literature. As a further application, we give a manifestly supersymmetric derivation of the non-relativistic ABJM theory.Comment: 18 page

    ABJM with Flavors and FQHE

We add fundamental matters to the N=6 Chern-Simons theory (ABJM theory), and show that D6-branes wrapped over AdS_4 x S^3/Z_2 in type IIA superstring theory on AdS_4 x CP^3 give its dual description with N=3 supersymmetry. We confirm this by the arguments based on R-symmetry, supersymmetry, and brane configuration of ABJM theory. We also analyze the fluctuations of the D6-brane and compute the conformal dimensions of dual operators. In the presence of fractional branes, the ABJM theory can model the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE), with RR-fields regarded as the external electric-magnetic field. We show that an addition of the flavor D6-brane describes a class of fractional quantum Hall plateau transition.Comment: 23 pages, Latex, no figures; (v2) references added, typos correcte

On the Universal Tachyon and Geometrical Tachyon

We study properties of non-BPS D(p+1)-brane in the background of k NS5-branes, with one transverse direction compactified on a circle, from the point of view of Dirac-Born-Infeld action. We present the analysis of two different embedding of non-BPS D(p+1)-brane in given background and study the classical solutions of given world-volume theory. We argue for the configuration of a non-BPS D(p+1)-brane which allows us to find solutions of the equations of motion that give unified descriptions of G and U-type branes.Comment: 24 pages, minor change

On Witten's Instability and Winding Tachyons

We investigate, from a spacetime perspective, some aspects of Horowitz's recent conjecture that black strings may catalyze the decay of Kaluza-Klein spacetimes into a bubble of nothing. We identify classical configurations that interpolate between flat space and the bubble, and discuss the energetics of the transition. We investigate the effects of winding tachyons on the size and shape of the barrier and find no evidence at large compactification radius that tachyons enhance the tunneling rate. For the interesting radii, of order the string scale, the question is difficult to answer due to the failure of the α\alpha^\prime expansion.Comment: 15 pages, 2 figures, Late
