A checklist of chromosome numbers and karyotypes of Amazonian freshwater fishes

    Get PDF
Forbidden Landscape from Holography

We present a class of field configurations that are forbidden in the quantum gravity because of inconsistency in the dual field theory from holography. Scale invariant but non-conformal field theories are impossible in (1+1) dimension, and so should be the corresponding gravity dual. In particular, the "spontaneous Lorentz symmetry breaking" models and the "ghost condensation" models, which are well-studied in phenomenology literatures, are forbidden in any consistent quantum theories of gravity in (1+2) dimension since they predict such inconsistent field configurations.Comment: 4pages, v2: some improvements, reference adde

Pentaquark baryon production from photon-neuteron reactions

Extending the hadronic Lagrangians that we recently introduced for studying pentaquark Θ+\Theta^+ baryon production from meson-proton, proton-proton, and photon-proton reactions near threshold to include the anomalous interaction between γ\gamma and KKK^*K, we evaluate the cross section for Θ+\Theta^+ production from photon-neutron reactions, in which the Θ+\Theta^+ was first detected in the SPring-8 experiment in Japan and the CLAS experiment at Thomas Jefferson National Laboratory. With empirical coupling constants and form factors, and assuming that the decay width of Θ+\Theta^+ is 20 MeV, the predicted cross section is found to have a peak value of about 280 nb, which is substantially larger than that for Θ+\Theta^+ production from photon-proton reactions.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figure

Mirrorfolds with K3 Fibrations

We study a class of non-geometric string vacua realized as completely soluble superconformal field theory (SCFT). These models are defined as `interpolating orbifolds' of K3×S1K3 \times S^1 by the mirror transformation acting on the K3K3 fiber combined with the half-shift on the S1S^1-base. They are variants of the T-folds, the interpolating orbifolds by T-duality transformations, and thus may be called `mirrorfolds'. Starting with arbitrary (compact or non-compact) Gepner models for the K3K3 fiber, we construct modular invariant partition functions of general mirrorfold models. In the case of compact K3K3 fiber the mirrorfolds only yield non-supersymmetric string vacua. They exhibit IR instability due to winding tachyon condensation which is similar to the Scherk-Schwarz type circle compactification. When the fiber SCFT is non-compact (say, the ALE space in the simplest case), on the other hand, both supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric vacua can be constructed. The non-compact non-supersymmetric mirrorfolds can get stabilised at the level of string perturbation theory. We also find that in the non-compact supersymmeric mirrorfolds D-branes are {\em always} non-BPS. These D-branes can get stabilized against both open- and closed-string marginal deformations.Comment: Eqns (2.61) and (3.17) correcte

BPS pp-wave brane cosmological solutions in string theory

We construct time dependent BPS pp-wave brane solutions in the context of M-theory and type II supergravity. It is found that N-brane solutions we considered satisfy the crossing rule as S-brane solutions but 1/8 supersymmetry remains. By applying them to the cosmological setting, inflationary solutions are obtained. During this inflation, the size of the extradimensions becomes smaller than our four-dimensional spacetime dynamically. We also discuss the mechanism for terminating this inflation and recovering the hot big-bang universe.Comment: 10 page

Anomalously localized states and multifractal correlations of critical wavefunctions in two-dimensional electron systems with spin-orbital interactions

Anomalously localized states (ALS) at the critical point of the Anderson transition are studied for the SU(2) model belonging to the two-dimensional symplectic class. Giving a quantitative definition of ALS to clarify statistical properties of them, the system-size dependence of a probability to find ALS at criticality is presented. It is found that the probability increases with the system size and ALS exist with a finite probability even in an infinite critical system, though the typical critical states are kept to be multifractal. This fact implies that ALS should be eliminated from an ensemble of critical states when studying critical properties from distributions of critical quantities. As a demonstration of the effect of ALS to critical properties, we show that the distribution function of the correlation dimension of critical wavefunctions becomes a delta function in the thermodynamic limit only if ALS are eliminated.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure

Renormalization of the P- and T-odd nuclear potentials by the strong interaction and enhancement of P-odd effective field

    Get PDF
Approximate analytical formulas for the self-consistent renormalization of P,T-odd and P-odd weak nuclear potentials by the residual nucleon-nucleon strong interaction are derived. The contact spin-flip nucleon-nucleon interaction reduces the constant of the P,T-odd potential 1.5 times for the proton and 1.8 times for the neutron. Renormalization of the P-odd potential is caused by the velocity dependent spin-flip component of the strong interaction. In the standard variant of π+ρ\pi + \rho-exchange, the conventional strength values lead to anomalous enhancement of the P-odd potential. Moreover, the π\pi-meson exchange contribution seems to be large enough to generate an instability (pole) in the nuclear response to a weak potential.Comment: 5 pages, Revtex3, no figure

Flux Backgrounds in 2D String Theory

    Get PDF
We study RR flux backgrounds in two dimensional type 0 string theories. In particular, we study the relation between the 0A matrix model and the extremal black hole in two dimensions. Using T-duality we find a dual flux background in type 0B theory and propose its matrix model description. When the Fermi level is set to zero this system remains weakly coupled and exhibits a larger symmetry related to the structure of flux vacua. Finally, we construct a two dimensional type IIB background as an orbifold of the 0B background.Comment: Harvmac, 40 pages, 6 figs, minor changes, references adde
