Assessing the Geomechanical Responses of Storage System in CO2 Geological Storage: an Introduction of Research Program in the National Institute for Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST)

AbstractThis paper overviews studies being conducted in the National Institute for Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) on the fluid-rock mechanical interaction associated with CO2 geological storage (CGS). Our studies include the extension of TOUGH-FLAC simulator developed in LBNL to CGS under the geologic conditions of Japan where the young sedimentary basins underlain by so-called “soft rocks” are postulated to be the place of CO2 storage. Experimental studies and basic studies on the petrophysical properties of “soft rocks” are also the important parts of the whole research program to elucidate their mechanical behaviors under the conditions in and around a CO2 reservoir and its caprock

Effects of unconscious thought on lie detection

Unconscious thought, defined as a situation where conscious attention is directed elsewhere rather than on the decision being made, has been reported as an effective way to uncover a target's lie (Reinhard et al., 2013). We reexamined the study of Reinhard et al. in a Japanese setting and also investigated how perceivers' personality traits related to accurate lie detections and true/false response tendency. Moreover, we examined how lie detection affected perceivers' interpersonal relationships. An experiment was conducted with 56 university students. Results indicate that students were more likely to make correct judgements when targets told the truth than when they lied. However, unconscious thought did not increase lie detection rates or true/false response tendency compared with conscious thought and control conditions. Among the personality traits that we used, state anxiety, social skills, and tendency to lie affected the lie detection rate. State anxiety also affected the true/false response tendency. Finally, perceiving a target telling the truth led participants to want to continue relationships, and this process was mediated by the impression of the targets. The cultural differences in unconscious thought, possible reasons our results did not replicate the findings of Reinhard et al., and the importance of state anxiety in lie detection are discussed.本論文は,第一著者が広島大学教育学部に提出した平成26年度卒業論文を基に作成したものである

The Collection and Image Database of Japanese Old Photographs in Bakumatsu-Meiji Period of Nagasaki University Library

    Get PDF
Nagasaki University Library began collecting old Japanese photographs, digitizing the images, and entering them into an on-line public database early on. Today, visitors from all over the world can access this site. The collection currently boasts 7,100 photos, making it one of the largest in Japan. This report intends to illustrate how Nagasaki University developed the database and how it is being used

Terpenoids from Ligularia virgaurea collected in China: the first example of two bakkane derivatives with an anhydride-type ring C and nineteen new chemical constituents

    Get PDF
Further chemical investigation of two Ligularia virgaurea samples collected in China resulted in the isolation of 21 new compounds, two of which were bakkane-type sesquiterpenoids bearing an anhydride-type ring C, which was a previously unknown partial structure. These samples belonged to the V-type (the major component was virgaurenone) among the five chemotypes found in this species

The maintenance and improvement of housing environments are essential for aged and handicapped persons living in a local communities. The support team consists of public health nurses, home helpers, occupational therapists and architects took part in giving an advices for house remodeling in Tsuyama City. We compared the effectiveness of the participation of the team before and after remodeling of housing environment. An interview was conducted at each cases for places of remodeling, living spaces, quantity of care and ease of going. The results are as follows ; 1. The remodeling of bathrooms, participating support team improved the living spaces to be able to take bath. 2. The remodeling of entrances and corridors for leaving beds, improved the living space and the QOL of care recipients. The results suggest that the remodeling of houses dose not always lighten care burdens for caring, but changes the quality of care for aged and handicapped persons

Phosphorylation of Syntaxin‐1a by casein kinase 2α (CK2α) regulates presynaptic vesicle exocytosis from the reserve pool

The t-soluble NSF-attachment protein receptor protein Syntaxin-1a (Stx-1a) is abundantly expressed at pre-synaptic terminals where it plays a critical role in the exocytosis of neurotransmitter-containing synaptic vesicles. Stx-1a is phosphorylated by Casein kinase 2α (CK2α) at Ser14, which has been proposed to regulate the interaction of Stx-1a and Munc-18 to control of synaptic vesicle priming. However, the role of CK2α in synaptic vesicle dynamics remains unclear. Here, we show that CK2α over-expression reduces evoked synaptic vesicle release. Furthermore, shRNA-mediated knockdown of CK2α in primary hippocampal neurons strongly enhanced vesicle exocytosis from the reserve pool, with no effect on the readily releasable pool of primed vesicles. In neurons in which endogenous Stx-1a was knocked down and replaced with a CK2α phosphorylation-deficient mutant, Stx-1a(D17A), vesicle exocytosis was also increased. These results reveal a previously unsuspected role of CK2α phosphorylation in specifically regulating the reserve synaptic vesicle pool, without changing the kinetics of release from the readily releasable pool
