AVAILABILITY OF ENGLISH-JAPANESE MACHINE TRANSLATION USING A PERSONAL COMPUTER (Papers Presented at the International Conference on Information and Knowledge\u2787, on the Theme "Dissemination")
Several software programs available for English-Japanese machine translation have been evaluated in various types of basic and practical sentences. The results are unfortunately dissatisfactory because of mainly the weakness in grammatical bases. However
The dialectic between African and Black aesthetics in some South African short stories
Most current studies on 'African' and/or 'Black' literature in South Africa appear to ignore the contradictions underlying the valuative concepts 'African' and 'Black'. This (Jamesonian) unconsciousness has led, primarily, to a situation where writers and critics assume generally that the concepts 'African' and 'Black' are synonymous and interchangeable. This study argues that such an attitude either unconsciously represses an awareness of the distinctive aspects of the worldview connotations of these concepts or deliberately suppresses them. The theoretical and pragmatic approach which this study adopts to explore the distinctive aspects of the worldview connotations of these concepts takes the form, initially, of a critique of such assumptions and their connotations. It is argued that any misconceptions about the relations between the concepts 'African' and 'Black' can only be elucidated through a rigorous and distinct definition of each of these concepts and the respective world views embodied in them. Each of the variables of these definitions is also examined thoroughly through an application of, inter alia, Frederick Jameson's 'dialectical' theory of textual criticism, Pierre Macherey's 'theory of literary production' and also through the post-colonial notions of 'hybridity' and 'syncreticity' propounded by Bill Ashcroft et.al (eds). In this way the study examines the dialectical interplay between, for instance, such oppositional notions as 'African' and 'Western' (place-conscious), 'Black' and 'White' (race-conscious), and other forms of ideological 'dominance' and 'marginality' reflected in the 'African' and/or 'Black' writers' motivations for the acquisition, appropriation and uses of the language of the 'other' (i.e. English) and its literary discourse in South Africa, Africa and elsewhere in the world. A close textual reading of the stories in Mothobi Mutloatse's (ed) Forced Landing, Mbulelo Mzamane's (ed) Hungry Flames underlies an examination of the processes of anthologisation and their implications of aesthetic collectivism, reconstruction and world view monolithicism which repress the distinctive world outlooks of the stories in these anthologies. The notions of aesthetic monolithicism implicit in each of these anthologies are interrogated via the editors' truistic assumptions about the organic nature of the relations between the concepts 'African' and 'Black'. The notion of a monolithic 'African' and 'Black' aesthetic is further decentred through a close textual reading of the uses of the 'African' and 'Black' valuative concepts in the short story collections The Living and the Dead and In Corner B by Es'kia (formerly Ezekiel) Mphahlele. The humanistic pronouncements in Mphahlele' s critical and short story texts suggest various ways of resolving the racial demarcations in both the 'Black' and 'White' South African literary formations. According to Mphahlele, a predominant racial consciousness inherent in the racial capitalist mode of economic production has deprived South African literature and culture an opportunity of creating a national humanistic and 'Afrocentric' form of aesthetic consciousness. The logical consequence of such a deprivation has been that the racial impediments toward the formation of a single national literature will have to be dismantled before the vision of a humanistic and 'Afrocentric' aesthetic can be realised in South Africa. The dismantling of both the 'Black' and 'White' monolithic forms of consciousness may pave the way toward the attainment of a synthetic and place-centred humanistic aesthetic. Such a dismantling of racial monolithicism will, hopefully, stimulate a debate on the question of an equally humanistic economic mode of production

Acceleration of healing of the medial collateral ligament of the knee by local administration of synthetic microRNA-210 in a rat model
AbstractBackgroundInjury to the medial collateral ligament (MCL) of the knee joint is the most common ligament injury of the knee. Ligament healing generally takes a long time. Micro-ribonucleic acid (miRNA) is one of the noncoding RNAs and plays a crucial role in physiological function; miRNA (miR)-210 is known as a potent factor of angiogenesis, which is an important initiator of ligament healing. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of local injection of double-stranded (ds) miR-210 on the healing of the MCL of rat knee joint.MethodsMCLs of Sprague-Dawley rats were cut transversely. After the fascia and skin were sutured, dsmiR-210 or control dsRNA was injected into the injured site of MCL. At 2 weeks and 4 weeks, histological analysis and immunofluorescence staining of vascular endothelial growth factor, isolectin B4, collagen type 1, and Ki67 as well as a mechanical test were performed. Analysis of complementary deoxyribonucleic acid (cDNA) microarray data was performed at 1 week.ResultsHistological analysis showed that parallel fibres in the injured site were organised at 2 weeks and became thicker at 4 weeks in the miR-210-treated group, whereas the injured site in controls was filled with loose fibrous tissues and was thinner than that in the miR-210-treated group. The number of blood vessels in the miR-210-treated group was significantly higher than that in controls (p < 0.05), and vascular endothelial growth factor, Ki67, and collagen type 1 in the miR-210-treated group were intensely expressed in the repaired site as compared to the control group. The mechanical test indicated that the ultimate failure load in the miR-210-treated group was significantly higher than that in the control group at 2 weeks. The cDNA microarray analysis showed significant upregulation of genes related to cell proliferation and cell differentiation, and genes involved in negative regulation of apoptosis.ConclusionThis study showed that local injection of dsmiR-210 could accelerate MCL healing in rat, which is likely due to stimulation of angiogenesis at the healing site
Decreased expression of miR-146a and miR-155 contributes to an abnormal Treg phenotype in patients with rheumatoid arthritis
Objectives: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been implicated in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases, not least for their critical role in the regulation of regulatory T cell (Treg) function. Deregulated expression of miR-146a and miR-155 has been associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We therefore investigated miR-146a and miR-155 expression in Tregs of patients with RA and their possible impact on Treg function and disease activity.
Methods: Expression of miR-146a and miR-155 was assessed in RA patients and controls. MiRNA expression was correlated with disease activity and expression of target genes. Interference with biological activity of miRNAs was evaluated in functional Treg assays.
Results: Diminished upregulation of miR-146a and miR-155 in response to T cell stimulation was found in Tregs of RA patients. Diminution of miR-146a expression was observed in particular in patients with active disease, and correlated with joint inflammation. In patients with active RA, Tregs demonstrated a pro-inflammatory phenotype characterised by inflammatory cytokine expression. This was due to an augmented expression and activation of signal transducer and activator transcription 1 (STAT1), a direct target of miR-146a.
Conclusions: Our results suggest that in RA miR-146a facilitates a pro-inflammatory phenotype of Tregs via increased STAT1 activation, and contributes thereby to RA pathogenesis
