Development and Validation of the Awareness of Privilege and Oppression Scale-2

The two studies presented describe the revision process that led to the development of the Awareness of Privilege and Oppression Scale–2 (APOS-2) and efforts to evaluate the new measure’s reliability and construct validity. In Study 1, a 26-item measure was developed from data gathered from a sample of 484 undergraduate students. An exploratory factor analysis suggested a four-factor solution made up of awareness of racism, sexism, heterosexism, and classism was appropriate. In Study 2, confirmatory factor analysis suggested the proposed hierarchical four-factor solution was the best available fit of the data using a second sample of 520 undergraduate students. The observed Cronbach alpha reliability estimates for the final 26-item total score and subscale scores in the two presented studies were as follows: Total score (.89, .88), Awareness of Heterosexism (.82, .82), Awareness of Sexism (.76, .76), Awareness of Classism (.81, .82), and Awareness of Racism (.84, .80)

    Aviation Psychology: Cognition and Personality

    Get PDF
This study has two main objectives. The first is to measure the personality traits of aviation students at EKU. Recent research indicates the existence of a distinct pilot personality profile, characterized by heightened emotional stability and conscientiousness compared to the general population. The current study will evaluate aviation students at EKU and see how they compare to that specific profile. The second objective is to evaluate aviation students\u27 confidence in their visual abilities during flight and to see whether certain interventions can help them better calibrate their confidence with their actual abilities. Awareness of cognitive limitations is vital for pilots as failure to recognize them can lead to catastrophic consequences. Results will be analyzed to determine the relationship between personality traits, aviation outcomes, and perceptions of visual awareness. Findings from this study could inform aviation instructors, advisors, and others about the role of personality in aviation education and the efficacy of interventions targeting perceptual limitations. This integrated approach aims to enhance aviation training by addressing both individual differences and perceptual challenges encountered in real-world aviation settings

Immune Cell Recruitment and Cell-Based System for Cancer Therapy

Immune cells, such as cytotoxic T lymphocytes, natural killer cells, B cells, and dendritic cells, have a central role in cancer immunotherapy. Conventional studies of cancer immunotherapy have focused mainly on the search for an efficient means to prime/activate tumor-associated antigen-specific immunity. A systematic understanding of the molecular basis of the trafficking and biodistribution of immune cells, however, is important for the development of more efficacious cancer immunotherapies. It is well established that the basis and premise of immunotherapy is the accumulation of effective immune cells in tumor tissues. Therefore, it is crucial to control the distribution of immune cells to optimize cancer immunotherapy. Recent characterization of various chemokines and chemokine receptors in the immune system has increased our knowledge of the regulatory mechanisms of the immune response and tolerance based on immune cell localization. Here, we review the immune cell recruitment and cell-based systems that can potentially control the systemic pharmacokinetics of immune cells and, in particular, focus on cell migrating molecules, i.e., chemokines, and their receptors, and their use in cancer immunotherapy

Use of the index of pulmonary vascular disease for predicting long-term outcome of pulmonary arterial hypertension associated with congenital heart disease

AimsLimited data exist on risk factors for the long-term outcome of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) associated with congenital heart disease (CHD-PAH). We focused on the index of pulmonary vascular disease (IPVD), an assessment system for pulmonary artery pathology specimens. The IPVD classifies pulmonary vascular lesions into four categories based on severity: (1) no intimal thickening, (2) cellular thickening of the intima, (3) fibrous thickening of the intima, and (4) destruction of the tunica media, with the overall grade expressed as an additive mean of these scores. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between IPVD and the long-term outcome of CHD-PAH.MethodsThis retrospective study examined lung pathology images of 764 patients with CHD-PAH aged <20 years whose lung specimens were submitted to the Japanese Research Institute of Pulmonary Vasculature for pulmonary pathological review between 2001 and 2020. Clinical information was collected retrospectively by each attending physician. The primary endpoint was cardiovascular death.ResultsThe 5-year, 10-year, 15-year, and 20-year cardiovascular death-free survival rates for all patients were 92.0%, 90.4%, 87.3%, and 86.1%, respectively. The group with an IPVD of ≥2.0 had significantly poorer survival than the group with an IPVD <2.0 (P = .037). The Cox proportional hazards model adjusted for the presence of congenital anomaly syndromes associated with pulmonary hypertension, and age at lung biopsy showed similar results (hazard ratio 4.46; 95% confidence interval: 1.45–13.73; P = .009).ConclusionsThe IPVD scoring system is useful for predicting the long-term outcome of CHD-PAH. For patients with an IPVD of ≥2.0, treatment strategies, including choosing palliative procedures such as pulmonary artery banding to restrict pulmonary blood flow and postponement of intracardiac repair, should be more carefully considered

Metacognitive Reading Strategies of Upward Bound Students

The use of metacognitive strategies in learning process gained a growing interest in academia. Metacognition is awareness and monitoring of one’s own comprehension processes (Moktari & Reichard, 2002). The purpose of this study was to better understand metacognitive reading strategies utilized by Upward Bound students and to enhance student’s awareness of their strategies. High school students in the Upward Bound Program completed the Metacognitive Awareness of Reading Strategies Inventory (MARSI) before and three months after a 5-week summer program (n=94). Data were collected over two years. The MARSI has three subscales including problem solving, global reading strategies, and supporting reading strategies while reading academic assignments. While students employed more metacognitive reading strategies after participation in the program in terms of the MARSI overall score and three subscale scores, the changes were not statistically significant. Inspection of average subscale scores showed that students used problem-solving strategies the most frequently and improved the most in support reading strategies after the program. Based on the results, we recommend implementing interventions specifically toward metacognitive reading during the program and supporting students’ transfer of reading skills from the program to their high school
