Studies on lantern fish (Benthosema pterotum) 1. Biochemical and microbiological investigation
Lantern-fish, an under-utilised fish is present in abundance, all the year round in tropical and sub-tropical waters. Biochemical and microbiological studies carried out on lantern fish, caught from the Gulfs of Oman and Aden are reported in this paper
Experimental formulation of an anti fouling paint with tributyl tin oxide as toxic pigment
Results of the experimental formulation of an antifouling paint incorporating TBTO as toxic pigment are presented in this paper. Of the various resins tested, namely, phenolic, cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL), epoxy linseed oil with rosin and limed rosin, the paint composition with limed rosin gave the critical leaching rate of TBTO. Acid alkali test showed dissolution of matrix and visible migration of toxin to the surface. Accelerated corrosion tests had not recorded any signs of corrosion in panels painted with or without barrier coat. Raft exposure studies indicated that the new formulation could resist fouling accumulation on painted panels for 9 months

Studies on arsenical creosote as a wood preservative for marine structures. Part 2. Observation on leaching, corrosion and resistance to borer attack
A detailed study on arsenical creosote with reference to leaching, corrosion and anti-borer properties was carried out. Results showed that aging had very little effect on the preservative which suggested better fixation of the preservative into the wood. Corrosion of mild steel, galvanised iron, aluminium-magnesium alloy (M57S) and copper panels in the preservative was found to be negligible. Normal creosote and low temperature creosote of Regional Research Laboratory, Hyderabad, both fortified with arsenic trioxide resisted borer damage on wooden panels for a period of over five months in the port of Cochin. The performance of low temperature creosote fortified with arsenic was found to be equally satisfactory when compared to normal creosote fortified in the same manner. A loading of 208.6 Kgs/ml³ for Haldu (Adina cordifolia) and 138 Kgs/m³ for Mango (Mangifera indica) in the case of normal creosote and 177 Kgs/m³ for Mango the case of RRL creosote were found to be sufficient for treating the wood
Comparative study of the nutrient content of fish and shell fish
The amino acid, mineral and proximate composition of mullet (Mugil oeur), mackerel (Rastrelliger kanagurta), crab (Scylla serrata) and prawn (Penaeus indicus) are reported. The data are used for comparing the nutritional quality of the fish and shell fish. Further, the amino acid composition is screened for their adequacy to meet the FAO/WHO recommended pattern of essential amino acids
Studies on arsenical creosote as a wood preservative for marine structures. Part 1. Incorporation of arsenic in creosote at various temperatures
A detailed study of the fortification of normal creosote and low temperature creosote with As sub(2) O sub(3) at 40°C, 50°C, 60°C, 70°C, 80°C and 90°C was carried out. When compared to normal creosote, low temperature creosote has been found to combine more easily with As sub(2) O sub(3) when temperature was . raised from 40 to 90°C. The incorporated arsenic values obtained shows that low temperature creosote with high phenolic content, retains considerably more As sub(2) O sub(3) and a maximum of 0.2180% w/w can be incorporated in low temperature creosote at 90°C

From cosmic deceleration to acceleration: new constraints from SN Ia and BAO/CMB
We use type Ia supernovae (SN Ia) data in combination with recent baryonic
acoustic oscillations (BAO) and cosmic microwave background (CMB) observations
to constrain a kink-like parametrization of the deceleration parameter ().
This -parametrization can be written in terms of the initial () and
present () values of the deceleration parameter, the redshift of the
cosmic transition from deceleration to acceleration () and the redshift
width of such transition (). By assuming a flat space geometry,
and adopting a likelihood approach to deal with the SN Ia data we obtain, at
the 68% confidence level (C.L.), that: ,
and when we combine
BAO/CMB observations with SN Ia data processed with the MLCS2k2 light-curve
fitter. When in this combination we use the SALT2 fitter we get instead, at the
same C.L.: , and
. Our results indicate, with a quite general and
model independent approach, that MLCS2k2 favors Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati-like
cosmological models, while SALT2 favors CDM-like ones. Progress in
determining the transition redshift and/or the present value of the
deceleration parameter depends crucially on solving the issue of the difference
obtained when using these two light-curve fitters.Comment: 25 pages, 9 figure
MSLED, Neutrino Oscillations and the Cosmological Constant
We explore the implications for neutrino masses and mixings within the
minimal version of the supersymmetric large-extra-dimensions scenario (MSLED).
This model was proposed in {\tt hep-ph/0404135} to extract the phenomenological
implications of the promising recent attempt (in {\tt hep-th/0304256}) to
address the cosmological constant problem. Remarkably, we find that the
simplest couplings between brane and bulk fermions within this approach can
lead to a phenomenologically-viable pattern of neutrino masses and mixings that
is also consistent with the supernova bounds which are usually the bane of
extra-dimensional neutrino models. Under certain circumstances the MSLED
scenario can lead to a lepton mixing (PMNS) matrix close to the so-called
bi-maximal or the tri-bimaximal forms (which are known to provide a good
description of the neutrino oscillation data). We discuss the implications of
