Wave forecasting and monitoring during very severe cyclone Phailin in the Bay of Bengal
Wave fields, both measured and forecast during the very severe cyclone Phailin, are discussed in this communication. Waves having maximum height of 13.54 m were recorded at Gopalpur, the landfall point of the cyclone. The forecast and observed significant wave heights matched well at Gopalpur with correlation coefficient of 0.98, RMS error of 0.35 m and scatter index of 14%. Forecasts were also validated in the open ocean and found to be reliable (scatter index < 15%). The study also revealed the presence of Southern Ocean swells with a peak period of 20-22 sec hitting Gopalpur coast along with the cyclone-generated waves
A prospective comparative study of efficacy of lenalidomide plus dexamethasone combination therapy versus VAD (vincristine, doxorubicin and dexamethasone) regimen in the treatment of multiple myeloma
Background: Lenalidomide plus Dexamethasone (Len-Dex) and VAD (Vincristine, Doxorubicin and Dexamethasone) regimen are the two common drug therapies employed in the treatment of Multiple myeloma.Objectives: To compare the efficacy of Len-Dex versus VAD regimen based on complete remission achieved with treatment in newly diagnosed cases of multiple myeloma in a tertiary care hospital in Kerala.Methods: Eighty patients (forty in each group) of newly diagnosed cases of multiple myeloma, who were willing to give the informed consent, were included in the study. Patients were allocated by the treating physician to two groups; one group was given Len-Dex (lenalidomide + dexamethasone) regimen and the other VAD (Vincristine, Adriamycin, Dexamethasone) regimen. A total of six cycles were given for both groups. Their baseline investigations and follow up investigations were collected at regular intervals, based on these values, the outcome was classified as partial remission and complete remission and the results were compared and analyzed.Results: Among the forty patients in each group, 17 (38%) on VAD regimen and 28 (62%) on Len-Dex regimen achieved complete remission. The statistical analysis was done using chi square test (╧З2= 6.13, df= 1, p= 0.01) which showed statistically significant difference.Conclusions: The study showed that the efficacy of Lenalidomide-Dexamethasone (Len-Dex) combination therapy is clearly higher than that of VAD regimen among the study population. The overall efficacy of Len-Dex combination is 70% and that of VAD regimen is only 42.5%
Growth and maturity of Indian oil sardine Sardinella longiceps (Valenciennes, 1847) along southwest coast of India
Growth studies are important to determine the total recruitment of fish
with respect to time while information on age and length at first maturity
are essential to assess the spawning stock. The present communication
deals with growth, maturity and mortality parameters of Indian oil
sardine Sardinella longiceps from southwest coast of India. Length at
first maturity of oil sardine was found to be 15.7 and 15.2 cm for male
and female, respectively. Comparison of length at first maturity of oil
sardine with earlier studies showed only minor variations. The growth
parameters LтИЮ, K, and age at zero length (t0) were calculated as 19.8 cm,
1.14 yr-1 and -0.0464 respectively. From the VBG equation, the length
attained at the end of I, II and III year is estimated as 13.79, 17.87 and
18.9 cm respectively. Two peaks of recruitment to the fishery were
observed. The values of total mortality (Z), natural mortality (M) and
fishing mortality (F) estimated are 4.33, 2.7 and 1.6 respectively. The
exploitation rate was found to be 0.37
Seasonal variations in the diet of the Indian oilsardine, Sardinella longiceps Valenciennes off Cochin, Kerala
Seasonal fluctuations in the food of the oilsardine Sardinella longiceps landed by ring seines from the inshore waters off
Cochin were studied during 2010. S. longiceps is chiefly a plankton feeder with diatoms, dinoflagellates and zooplankton
appearing in the diet in decreasing order of abundance. During pre-monsoon (February-May), Pleurosigma was present in
70% of the stomachs analysed followed by Thalassiosira, Biddulphia and Coscinodiscus. During monsoon season
(June-September), 87.5% of the stomachs contained Coscinodiscus followed by Thalassiosira and Pyrophacus. During
post-monsoon (October- January) again, the frequency of occurrence of Pleurosigma (74.2%) was higher followed by
Biddulphia and Thalassiosira. Zooplankton, represented by tintinnids and copepods, were present in the diet throughout the
year, but in relatively less number of stomachs. Higher feeding activity was observed during monsoon (June-September),
which coincided with maximum spawning activity
Cosmokinetics: A joint analysis of Standard Candles, Rulers and Cosmic Clocks
We study the accelerated expansion of the universe by using the kinematic
approach. In this context, we parameterize the deceleration parameter, q(z), in
a model independent way. Assuming three simple parameterizations we reconstruct
q(z). We do the joint analysis with combination of latest cosmological data
consisting of standard candles (Supernovae Union2 sample), standard ruler
(CMB/BAO), cosmic clocks (age of passively evolving galaxies) and Hubble (H(z))

Stock structure analysis of Indian mackerel Rastrelliger kanagurta (Cuvier, 1817) from south-east and south-west coasts of India using truss network system
A total of 200 specimens of Indian mackerel (Rastrelliger kanagurta) were collected from Kochi in the south-west
coast and Chennai in the south-east coast and they were subjected to truss analysis. A truss network was constructed by
interconnecting 10 landmarks to form a total of 21 truss distance variables extracted from the landmarks. The transformed
truss measurements were subjected to factor analysis which revealed that there is no separation of the stocks along
south-east and south-west coasts. Thus the present study has indicated that the population of Indian mackerel from
south-east and south-west coasts remains the same

The transformed truss measurements were subjected to factor analysis which revealed that there is no separation of the stocks along southeast and southwest coasts. The marginal differences in shape and form are attributed to the ecological differences in the habitats which is evident from differences in length weight relationships and feeding intensity of the population along these two coasts

Mutation in the FUS nuclear localisation signal domain causes neurodevelopmental and systemic metabolic alterations
Variants in the ubiquitously expressed DNA/RNA-binding protein FUS cause aggressive juvenile forms of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Most FUS mutation studies have focused on motor neuron degeneration; little is known about wider systemic or developmental effects. We studied pleiotropic phenotypes in a physiological knock-in mouse model carrying the pathogenic FUSDelta14 mutation in homozygosity. RNA sequencing of multiple organs aimed to identify pathways altered by the mutant protein in the systemic transcriptome, including metabolic tissues, given the link between ALS-frontotemporal dementia and altered metabolism. Few genes were commonly altered across all tissues, and most genes and pathways affected were generally tissue specific. Phenotypic assessment of mice revealed systemic metabolic alterations related to the pathway changes identified. Magnetic resonance imaging brain scans and histological characterisation revealed that homozygous FUSDelta14 brains were smaller than heterozygous and wild-type brains and displayed significant morphological alterations, including a thinner cortex, reduced neuronal number and increased gliosis, which correlated with early cognitive impairment and fatal seizures. These findings show that the disease aetiology of FUS variants can include both neurodevelopmental and systemic alterations
