Unimpeded permeation of water through helium-leak-tight graphene-based membranes
Permeation through nanometer pores is important in the design of materials
for filtration and separation techniques and because of unusual fundamental
behavior arising at the molecular scale. We found that submicron-thick
membranes made from graphene oxide can be completely impermeable to liquids,
vapors and gases, including helium, but allow unimpeded permeation of water
(H2O permeates through the membranes at least 10^10 times faster than He). We
attribute these seemingly incompatible observations to a low-friction flow of a
monolayer of water through two dimensional capillaries formed by closely spaced
graphene sheets. Diffusion of other molecules is blocked by reversible
narrowing of the capillaries in low humidity and/or by their clogging with
water
Biochemical changes of fish fingers held at frozen storage
The frozen storage characteristics of fish fingers made out of two different species, differing in lipid content for a period of six months are outlined. The study reveals that the lipid content of the fish meat used for making fish fingers influences the storage pattern in terms of the chemical parameters like peroxide value, thiobarbituric acid value and free fatty acids. The introduction of monosodium glutamate has improved the flavour of the fish fingers. Further, the application of batter on the fish fingers imparted some protective effect in the case of semi-fatty fish
Biochemical studies on changes associated with enzymes of glucose metabolism in white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) infected with Penaeus monodon (Fabricius)
Tiger prawns (Penaeus monodon) were infected with white spot virus artificially by intramuscular injection of the virus inoculum. Haemolymph, hepatopancreas and muscle samples from the infectedprawns were analyzed for glucose and enzymes viz aldolase, glucose-6-phosphatase, fructose-1,6-diphosphatase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase in the carbohydrate metabolism. Glucose content reduced to 33% of its original value in 24 h of infection and to 31% in 48 h. Almost 95% loss in activity was observed in the case of fructose 1,6-diphosphatase in hepatopancreas, whereas the reduction in activity in muscle was 67%, after 48 h of infection. Glucose-6-phosphatase showed a reduction of 16 and 13% in hepatopancreas and muscle respectively during 24 h of infection. The activity of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase increased by 300% of original value in hepatopancreas, while in muscle the increase was only 30% of original value during 24 h of infection. No significant change in activity was noted in the case of aldolase. Even at moribund stage, the glycolytic pathway was not affected, as evident from the normal activity of aldolase observed in the present study

Color Skyrmions in the Quark-Gluon Plasma
We consider the general formulation of nonabelian fluid dynamics based on
symmetry considerations. We point out that, quite generally, this admits
solitonic excitations which are the color analog of skyrmions. Some general
