    Mining valuable minerals from seawater: A critical review

    ©2017 The Royal Society of Chemistry. Seawater contains large quantities of valuable minerals, some of which are very scarce and expensive in their land-based form. However, only a few minerals, the ones in high concentrations, are currently mined from the sea. Due to recent problems associated with land-based mining industries as a result of depletion of high-grade ores, sustainable water and energy demand and environmental issues, seawater mining is becoming an attractive option. This paper presents a comprehensive and critical review of the current methods of extracting valuable minerals from seawater and seawater brines generated in desalination plants, and suggests ways to overcome some of the limitations and challenges associated with the extraction process. The extraction methods discussed are solar evaporation, electrodialysis (ED), membrane distillation crystallisation (MDC), and adsorption/desorption

    In order to meet the global competition and the survival of products in the market a new way of thinking is necessary to change and improve the existing technology and to develop products at economical price.This paper discusses use taguchi experiment design technique for maximizing tensile strength of friction stir welding AA6061 and AA6061. In friction stir welding, the joints are formed in the solid state by utilizing the heat generated by friction. The objectives of this study are obtaining friction weld element of aluminium 6061 to aluminium 6061 and optimising the friction stir welding parameters in order to establish the weld quality. Effect of tensile strength of friction stir welding process parameter (Rotational speed, travel speed, axial force and tilt angle) is evaluated and optimum welding condition for maximum tensile strength is determined

    Objective: Friction stir welding (FSW) is a relatively new solid state welding technique for similar and dissimilar materials, especially on current interest with Aluminium 7071 to Aluminim 7071. Method/Analysis: The present paper discusses the process parameters followed by mechanical properties and microstructures which affect the weld strength. Findings: Mechanical properties-Tensile strength attained with different process parameters and Microstructures are obtained by Optical Metallurgical Microscopy (MET SCOPE-1) and a Scanning Electron Microscopy equipped with an X-radiation detector EDS Conclusion/Application: In this study Similar FSW between Al 7071 to Al 7071plates with thickness 6mm were performed. The future research will contain creep tests and microstructural investigations using aluminium 7071 alloy using TEM microscopy (Transmission Electron Microscopy).It is demonstrated that FSW of aluminium to aluminium alloys is becoming an emerging technology with numerous commercial applications

    VALIDATED SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC METHOD FOR THE DETERMINATION OF CHLORAMPHENICOL IN PURE AND IN ITS DOSAGE FORM

    Objective: A simple, economic, selective, precise, and accurate UV-Visible spectrophotometric method for the analysis of Chloramphenicol in bulk drug and pharmaceutical formulations was developed and validated in the present study. Methods: Based on oxidative coupling reaction with MBTH reagent at PH-4.5 which is extractable at 620 nm. The Beer's law is obeyed in the concentration range 1-6 ml (10-60 µg ml-1). Results: The RSD was found to be 0.0194% and recovery is 99.73%. The method was completely validated and proven to be rugged. The interferences of the ingredients and recipients were not observed. The repeatability and the performance of the proved method were established by point and internal hypothesis and through recovery studies. Conclusion: The method was found to be accurate and precise, as indicated by recovery studies close to 100 and % RSD is not more than 2. The summery of validation parameters of proposed UV-Visible method is given

    Lagrangian subcategories and braided tensor equivalences of twisted quantum doubles of finite groups

    We classify Lagrangian subcategories of the representation category of a twisted quantum double of a finite group. In view of results of 0704.0195v2 this gives a complete description of all braided tensor equivalent pairs of twisted quantum doubles of finite groups. We also establish a canonical bijection between Lagrangian subcategories of the representation category of a twisted quantum double of a finite group G and module categories over the category of twisted G-graded vector spaces such that the dual tensor category is pointed. This can be viewed as a quantum version of V. Drinfeld's characterization of homogeneous spaces of a Poisson-Lie group in terms of Lagrangian subalgebras of the double of its Lie bialgebra. As a consequence, we obtain that two group-theoretical fusion categories are weakly Morita equivalent if and only if their centers are equivalent as braided tensor categories.Comment: 26 pages; several comments and references adde

    Laryngeal nerve “anastomoses”

    Laryngeal nerves have been observed to communicate with each other and forma variety of patterns. These communications have been studied extensively and have been of particular interest as it may provide an additional form of innervation to the intrinsic laryngeal muscles. Variations noted in incidence may help explain the variable position of the vocal folds after vocal fold paralysis. This study aimed to examine the incidence of various neural communications and to determine their contribution to the innervation of the larynx. Fifty adult cadaveric en-bloc laryngeal specimens were studied. Three different types of communications were observed between internal and recurrent laryngeal nerves viz. (1) Galen’s anastomosis (81%): in 13%, it was observed to supply the posterior cricoarytenoid muscle; (2) thyroarytenoid communication (9%): this was observed to supply the thyroarytenoid musclein 2% of specimens and (3) arytenoid plexus (28%): in 6%, it supplied a branch tothe transverse arytenoid muscle. The only communication between the externaland recurrent laryngeal nerves was the communicating nerve (25%). In one lefthemi-larynx, the internal laryngeal nerve formed a communication with the externall aryngeal nerve, via a thyroid foramen. The neural communications that exist in the larynx have been thought to play a role in laryngeal innervation. The results of this study have shown varying incidences in neural communications. Contributions fromthese communications have also been noted to various in trinsic laryngeal muscles which may be a possible factor responsible for the variable position of the vocalfolds in certain cases of vocal fold paralysis

    Rubidium recovery using potassium cobalt hexacyanoferrate sorbent

    © 2016 Balaban Desalination Publications. All rights reserved. Rubidium (Rb) is a highly valued and economically important metal present in large quantities in many natural and wastewaters. However, its recovery is hampered by its low concentration and extracting agents’ limited selectivity. A batch sorption study showed that a potassium cobalt hexacyanoferrate (KCoFC) sorbent had much higher sorption capacities for Rb and caesium (Cs) than for lithium (Li), sodium (Na) and calcium (Ca). Equilibrium sorption data at pH 7 and 24 ± 1°C for Rb and Cs satisfactorily fitted to the Langmuir model with sorption maxima of 96 and 61 mg/g, respectively. A fixed-bed column (12 cm height) containing a mixture of 2.2 g KCoFC and 19.8 g granular activated carbon had a breakthrough sorption capacity of 61 mg/g when a solution containing 5 mg Rb/L was passed through the column at a velocity of 2.5 m/h (0.7 L/h). When 1 and 5 mg Cs/L were added to the Rb solution, Rb sorption capacity dropped to 46 and 41 mg/g, respectively. During Rb sorption, K from the KCoFC lattice was released. Leaching the column containing sorbed Rb with 0.1 M KCl for 60 min at a velocity of 10 m/h desorbed 99% of sorbed Rb. A process for recovering Rb from sea water reverse osmosis brine is presented
