Non-concave fundamental diagrams and phase transitions in a stochastic traffic cellular automaton
Within the class of stochastic cellular automata models of traffic flows, we
look at the velocity dependent randomization variant (VDR-TCA) whose parameters
take on a specific set of extreme values. These initial conditions lead us to
the discovery of the emergence of four distinct phases. Studying the
transitions between these phases, allows us to establish a rigorous
classification based on their tempo-spatial behavioral characteristics. As a
result from the system's complex dynamics, its flow-density relation exhibits a
non-concave region in which forward propagating density waves are encountered.
All four phases furthermore share the common property that moving vehicles can
never increase their speed once the system has settled into an equilibrium
Presence of Many Stable Nonhomogeneous States in an Inertial Car-Following Model
A new single lane car following model of traffic flow is presented. The model
is inertial and free of collisions. It demonstrates experimentally observed
features of traffic flow such as the existence of three regimes: free,
fluctuative (synchronized) and congested (jammed) flow; bistability of free and
fluctuative states in a certain range of densities, which causes the hysteresis
in transitions between these states; jumps in the density-flux plane in the
fluctuative regime and gradual spatial transition from synchronized to free
flow. Our model suggests that in the fluctuative regime there exist many stable
states with different wavelengths, and that the velocity fluctuations in the
congested flow regime decay approximately according to a power law in time.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Vibrational entropy and microstructural effects on the thermodynamics of partially disordered and ordered Ni3V
Samples of Ni3V were prepared with two microstructures: (1) with equilibrium D022 order, and (2) with partial disorder (having a large D022 chemical order parameter, but without the tetragonality of the unit cell). For both materials, we measured the difference in their heat capacities from 60 to 325 K, inelastic neutron-scattering spectra at four values of Q at 11 and at 300 K, and Young's moduli and coefficients of thermal expansion. The difference in heat capacity at low temperatures was consistent with a harmonic model using the phonon density of states (DOS) curves determined from the inelastic neutron-scattering spectra. In contrast, at temperatures greater than 160 K the difference in heat capacity did not approach zero, as expected of harmonic behavior. The temperature dependence of the phonon DOS can be used to approximately account for the anharmonic contributions to the differential heat capacity. We also argue that some of the anharmonic behavior should originate with a microstructural contribution to the heat capacity involving anisotropic thermal contractions of the D022 structure. We estimate the difference in vibrational entropy between partially disordered and ordered Ni3V to be Spdis -Sord =(+0.038±0.015)kB /atom at 300 K
A Simplified Cellular Automaton Model for City Traffic
We systematically investigate the effect of blockage sites in a cellular
automaton model for traffic flow. Different scheduling schemes for the blockage
sites are considered. None of them returns a linear relationship between the
fraction of ``green'' time and the throughput. We use this information for a

Discrete stochastic models for traffic flow
We investigate a probabilistic cellular automaton model which has been
introduced recently. This model describes single-lane traffic flow on a ring
and generalizes the asymmetric exclusion process models. We study the
equilibrium properties and calculate the so-called fundamental diagrams (flow
vs.\ density) for parallel dynamics. This is done numerically by computer
simulations of the model and by means of an improved mean-field approximation
which takes into account short-range correlations. For cars with maximum
velocity 1 the simplest non-trivial approximation gives the exact result. For
higher velocities the analytical results, obtained by iterated application of
the approximation scheme, are in excellent agreement with the numerical

Two-lane traffic rules for cellular automata: A systematic approach
Microscopic modeling of multi-lane traffic is usually done by applying
heuristic lane changing rules, and often with unsatisfying results. Recently, a
cellular automaton model for two-lane traffic was able to overcome some of
these problems and to produce a correct density inversion at densities somewhat
below the maximum flow density. In this paper, we summarize different
approaches to lane changing and their results, and propose a general scheme,
according to which realistic lane changing rules can be developed. We test this
scheme by applying it to several different lane changing rules, which, in spite
of their differences, generate similar and realistic results. We thus conclude
that, for producing realistic results, the logical structure of the lane
changing rules, as proposed here, is at least as important as the microscopic
details of the rules
Mechanical restriction versus human overreaction triggering congested traffic states
A new cellular automaton (CA) traffic model is presented. The focus is on
mechanical restrictions of vehicles realized by limited acceleration and
deceleration capabilities. These features are incorporated into the model in
order to construct the condition of collision-free movement. The strict
collision-free criterion imposed by the mechanical restrictions is softened in
certain traffic situations, reflecting human overreaction. It is shown that the
present model reliably reproduces most empirical findings including
synchronized flow, the so-called {\it pinch effect}, and the time-headway
distribution of free flow. The findings suggest that many free flow phenomena
can be attributed to the platoon formation of vehicles ({\it platoon effect})Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, to appear in PR
Critical behavior of a traffic flow model
The Nagel-Schreckenberg traffic flow model shows a transition from a free
flow regime to a jammed regime for increasing car density. The measurement of
the dynamical structure factor offers the chance to observe the evolution of
jams without the necessity to define a car to be jammed or not. Above the
jamming transition the dynamical structure factor exhibits for a given k-value
two maxima corresponding to the separation of the system into the free flow
phase and jammed phase. We obtain from a finite-size scaling analysis of the
smallest jam mode that approaching the transition long range correlations of
