Examination of the 22^{22}C radius determination with interaction cross sections

    Get PDF
A nuclear radius of 22^{22}C is investigated with the total reaction cross sections at medium- to high-incident energies in order to resolve the radius puzzle in which two recent interaction cross section measurements using 1^1H and 12^{12}C targets show the quite different radii. The cross sections of 22^{22}C are calculated consistently for these target nuclei within a reliable microscopic framework, the Glauber theory. To describe appropriately such a reaction involving a spatially extended nucleus, the multiple scattering processes within the Glauber theory are fully taken into account, that is, the multi-dimensional integration in the Glauber amplitude is evaluated using a Monte Carlo technique without recourse to the optical-limit approximation. We discuss the sensitivity of the spatially extended halo tail to the total reaction cross sections. The root-mean-square matter radius obtained in this study is consistent with that extracted from the recent cross section measurement on 12^{12}C target. We show that the simultaneous reproduction of the two recent measured cross sections is not feasible within this framework.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev.

A case of WAGR syndrome in association with developmental glaucoma requiring bilateral Baerveldt glaucoma implants and subsequent tube repositioning

Glaucoma drainage device implantation is efficacious for the treatment of pediatric glaucoma patients when multiple angle surgeries fail. However, tube touching of the corneal endothelium is one of the major postoperative complications to deal with. A 15-month-old male patient with Wilms’ tumor, aniridia, genitourinary anomalies, and mental retardation (WAGR) syndrome was diagnosed with bilateral developmental glaucoma. He underwent Baerveldt glaucoma implant (BGI) surgeries in both eyes after multiple failed trabeculotomies. The tube in his right eye was touching the cornea 15 months after BGI surgery. To avoid corneal endothelium damage, BGI tube repositioning with scleral fixation was performed without serious complications. The bilateral BGI surgeries achieved successful intraocular pressure reduction for over 2 years and tube repositioning with scleral fixation of BGI tube was successful for BGI tube malposition. Although careful attention to intraocular pressure and tube malposition is essential after glaucoma drainage device implantation, especially in pediatric cases, BGI surgery is effective in the management of developmental glaucoma following unsuccessful angle surgeries

Revising the existing Performance Indicator system for small water supply utilities in Japan

    Get PDF
97.5% of the water utilities in Japan serve less than 50, 000 customers, and are called small water utilities. The Performance Indicator system in Japan, used to evaluate the performance of various aspects of the supply system, currently has 137 items, which are too many in number for the small utilities to adopt because of resource and financial constraints. The objective of this study is to, thus, revise the existing PI system to arrive at a reduced, relevant and practical structure that provides enough information to rationally evaluate small water supply systems in Japan. Principal Component Analysis was used to reduce the dimensionality of the original data. The results suggest that only nine components, consisting of 33 items (called 9-cPIS), are sufficient for evaluating the small water utilities. The effectiveness of the 9-cPIS in benchmarking, evaluating business models, and the planning and management of the water utilities has been discussed further

The effect of istradefylline for Parkinson’s disease : A meta-analysis

Adenosine A2A receptor antagonists are an alternative treatment strategy for Parkinson’s disease. Several randomized placebo controlled studies have tested the effect of A2A receptor antagonist istradefylline, and more robust evidence has been acquired. This meta-analysis aimed to provide evidence for its efficacy and safety on patients with Parkinson’s disease. After a systematic literature search, we calculated the pooled standardized mean difference and risk ratio for continuous and dichotomous variables, respectively. Further, sensitivity analyses were performed to confirm the effect estimated by meta-analyses. Publication bias was assessed by funnel plot and deviation of intercept. Six studies satisfied our inclusion criteria. Istradefylline (40 mg/day) decreased off time and improved motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease in homogeneous studies. Istradefylline at 20 mg/day decreased off time and improved motor symptoms, but heterogeneity was found in the analysis of the former among studies. There was a significant effect of istradefylline on dyskinesia in homogeneous studies. Publication bias, however, was observed in the comparison of dyskinesia. Other adverse events showed no significant difference. The present meta-analysis suggests that istradefylline at 40 mg/day could alleviate off time and motor symptoms derived from Parkinson’s disease. Dyskinesia might be worsened, but publication bias prevents this from being clear

Microperimetry and multimodal imaging in polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy

    Get PDF
Polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) is a degenerative macular disease. The study determined the topographical concordance in the areal extent of PCV, defined by indocyanine green angiography (ICGA), and the corresponding outcomes from spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and microperimetry, in 25 individuals (25 eyes) who had undergone 3 months of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor treatment. The differential light sensitivity within 10° eccentricity was evaluated by Pattern Deviation probability analysis. The concordances and proportional areal extents of the abnormality for ICGA, SD-OCT and microperimetry were compared. The concordance in the areal extent between all three modalities was 59%. The median concordance between ICGA and microperimetry was 60%; between ICGA and SD-OCT, 70%; and between SD-OCT and microperimetry, 72%. SD-OCT and microperimetry each identified a greater areal extent (>20%) compared to ICGA in 13 and 19 eyes, respectively. A greater areal extent (>20%) was present in 9 eyes for microperimetry compared to SD-OCT and in 5 eyes for SD-OCT compared to microperimetry. SD-OCT and microperimetry each identified a greater area of abnormality than ICGA which supports the clinical utility of SD-OCT. Strong concordance was present between SD-OCT and microperimetry; however, microperimetry identified additional areas of functional abnormality
