Le monastère des bénédictines de Couvrechef à Caen représente un jalon important dans l’architecture monastique de la reconstruction en France après la Seconde Guerre mondiale. La simplicité, voire l’austérité de ses lignes, constitue la traduction architecturale du retour à la source originelle du monachisme tel qu’il fut édicté dans la règle de saint Benoît. L’architecte Jean Zunz reprend dans ses grandes lignes le plan traditionnel hérité des usages cisterciens, en privilégiant l’aspect fonctionnel par rapport à la recherche du spectaculaire ou de l’originalité. Il réserve à l’église un parti de plan plus contemporain afin de mettre en valeur cet espace liturgique.The monastery of the Benedictines in Caen (north area of « Couvrechef ») represents an important event in the monastic architecture of the reconstruction in France after the Second world war. The simplicity, even the austerity of its architectural lines, constitutes the architectural translation of comeback to the original source of the monachisme such as it has been promulgated in the Rule of saint Benedict. The architect Jean Zunz uses in its main lines the plan inherited from the Cistercian tradition, by giving more importance to the functional aspect on the result than to the spectacular or the originality. He draws for the church a more contemporary plan to highlight this liturgical space

La reconstruction des édifices religieux en Basse-Normandie après la Seconde Guerre mondiale

The study begun for the purposes of legal protection in conformance with ancient memorials allowed to establish synthetic material global relative to the reconstruction of the religious buildings by replacing it in its historic and economic local context. The typological analysis revealed a big formal explosion offering very characteristic, architectural variety and experimentation of the stylistic hesitances in the architecture of the 1950s. The art of stained-glass window making found a privileged position through research always more plastic around the lighting of the church. The conclusion will try to bring in the form of synthesis a contribution to a legitimate interrogation: can we speak about a « style » of the reconstruction
