    Doubly perturbed S3S_3 neutrinos and the s13s_{13} mixing parameter

    We further study a predictive model for the masses and mixing matrix of three Majorana neutrinos. At zeroth order the model yielded degenerate neutrinos and a generalized ``tribimaximal" mixing matrix. At first order the mass splitting was incorporated and the tribimaximal mixing matrix emerged with very small corrections but with a zero value for the parameter s13s_{13}. In the present paper a different, assumed weaker, perturbation is included which gives a non zero value for s13s_{13} and further corrections to other quantities. These corrections are worked out and their consequences discussed under the simplifying assumption that the conventional CP violation phase vanishes. It is shown that the existing measurements of the parameter s23s_{23} provide strong bounds on s13s_{13} in this model.Comment: 8 page

    Electrical transport and optical studies of ferromagnetic Cobalt doped ZnO nanoparticles exhibiting a metal-insulator transition

    The observed correlation of oxygen vacancies and room temperature ferromagnetic ordering in Co doped ZnO1-o nanoparticles reported earlier (Naeem et al Nanotechnology 17, 2675-2680) has been further explored by transport and optical measurements. In these particles room temperature ferromagnetic ordering had been observed to occur only after annealing in forming gas. In the current work the optical properties have been studied by diffuse reflection spectroscopy in the UV-Vis region and the band gap of the Co doped compositions has been found to decrease with Co addition. Reflections minima are observed at the energies characteristic of Co+2 d-d (tethrahedral symmetry) crystal field transitions, further establishing the presence of Co in substitutional sites. Electrical transport measurements on palletized samples of the nanoparticles show that the effect of a forming gas is to strongly decrease the resistivity with increasing Co concentration. For the air annealed and non-ferromagnetic samples the variation in the resistivity as a function of Co content are opposite to those observed in the particles prepared in forming gas. The ferromagnetic samples exhibit an apparent change from insulator to metal with increasing temperatures for T>380K and this change becomes more pronounced with increasing Co content. The magnetic and resistive behaviors are correlated by considering the model by Calderon et al [M. J. Calderon and S. D. Sarma, Annals of Physics 2007 (Accepted doi: 10.1016/j.aop.2007.01.010] where the ferromagnetism changes from being mediated by polarons in the low temperature insulating region to being mediated by the carriers released from the weakly bound states in the higher temperature metallic region.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure

    A partial Lagrangian approach to mathematical models of epidemiology.

    This paper analyzes the first integrals and exact solutions of mathematical models of epidemiology via the partial Lagrangian approach by replacing the three first-order nonlinear ordinary differential equations by an equivalent system containing one second order equation and a first-order equation. The partial Lagrangian approach is then utilized for the second-order ODE to construct the first integrals of the underlying system.We investigate the SIR and HIV models.We obtain two first integrals for the SIR model with and without demographic growth. For the HIV model without demography, five first integrals are established and two first integrals are deduced for the HIV model with demography. Then we utilize the derived first integrals to construct exact solutions to the models under investigation. The dynamic properties of these models are studied too. Numerical solutions are derived for SIR models by finite difference method and are compared with exact solutions

    ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH RISKS TO FARMERS AS A RESULT OF PESTICIDES’ MISMANAGEMENT IN KHANYOUNIS GOVERNORATE, GAZA STRIP

    Several poisoning and death cases were reported in Khanyounis Governorate as a result of mis-use and mishandling of pesticides. Carcinogenic and internationally banned pesticides are still available in the markets in all the governorates of the Gaza Strip. This study aims to investigate the awareness and health issues of the farmers. Fortyfive farmers were randomly selected to fill a questionnaire prepared for this purpose. The results showed that protective clothing are totally not worn during application of pesticides. Lack of storage faculties, unlicensed pesticide shops, improper disposal of the empty containers and smoking and eating during application are among the hot spots related to pesticides handling and application. Also, 44.5% of the farmers complain of health problems, of which headache, coughing, skin rashes and difficulty in breathing. Only 4.5% of the farmers attended general agricultural training courses. In conclusion the study suggests that the government, public, the non-governmental organizations and all the interested parties should cooperate in a collective and serious work to minimize these environmental and health risks

    A Software Radio Design Approach for Heterogeneous Wireless Access Protocol Transceivers

    A study on the design of heterogeneous transceivers using the software radio approach is presented. The objective of the study is to extend the research on software radio towards the design of multi-protocol transceivers which can communicate between two or more heterogeneous wireless access technologies. A critical overview of some of the current multi- protocol software radio devices is presented. This is then followed by a proposal for a dual band WiFi/WiMAX transceiver based on software radio techniques. This design incorporates a multiband antenna as well as an RF WiFi/WiMAX mode switch which uses the WiFi received signal strength (RSS) to perform handover between the underlying WiFi and WiMAX networks

    The procedure for the assessment of the urinary mucosal cryoglobulin (UMCG) is being reviewed, testified and evaluated. The major features of UMCG are rather similar to that of serum cryoglobulin. Such evident similarities are forming the reality for the existence of the UMCG. There were seven characterizing criteria useable for the identification for UMCG. Upon matching them to the Irish criteria for serum cryoglobulin, some modifications are being proposed to the 16th standards that has been formulated and built as an Irish criterion.     A hybrid approach to recognising activities of daily living from object use in the home environment

    Accurate recognition of Activities of Daily Living (ADL) plays an important role in providing assistance and support to the elderly and cognitively impaired. Current knowledge-driven and ontology-based techniques model object concepts from assumptions and everyday common knowledge of object use for routine activities. Modelling activities from such information can lead to incorrect recognition of particular routine activities resulting in possible failure to detect abnormal activity trends. In cases where such prior knowledge are not available, such techniques become virtually unemployable. A significant step in the recognition of activities is the accurate discovery of the object usage for specific routine activities. This paper presents a hybrid framework for automatic consumption of sensor data and associating object usage to routine activities using Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic modelling. This process enables the recognition of simple activities of daily living from object usage and interactions in the home environment. The evaluation of the proposed framework on the Kasteren and Ordonez datasets show that it yields better results compared to existing techniques

    Intracystic Hemorrhage In A Simple Liver Cyst Due To Dual Anti-Platelet Therapy After Percutaneous Coronary Intervention

    Hemorrhage into a simple hepatic cyst often results in development of a complex cystic lesion, which makes this identical to a cystic tumor. We present a striking example of this decision-making in a patient with suspected intracystic hemorrhage from recent anti-platelet medication use post-percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). 83-year-old male presented to the hospital with acute right upper quadrant (RUQ) abdominal pain, severe and constant. This was associated with nausea and constipation. Medical history was significant for recent PCI and initiation of dual anti-platelet therapy (DAPT) ten days ago, and chronic thrombocytopenia. Ultrasound and CT confirmed complex 12.8 x 11.4 x 12.4 cm hepatic cyst, with suspected, intracystic hemorrhage of a simple liver cyst. Given failed conservative management, surgical route was opted. Laparoscopic fenestration of the cyst yielded a large volume of bloody material confirming the diagnosis. Biopsy of the cyst wall showed simple liver cyst with an adherent blood clot. Aspirin was resumed post-operatively, and ticagrelor was continued throughout given the high risk of stent thrombosis. Intracystic hemorrhage in a simple liver cyst, though rare, is a possible complication of DAPT use after PCI. Further use of DAPT usually requires tailored approach to patient’s coronary anatomy, nature of stent used, underlying risk factors and type of bleed

    Three Dimensional Polarimetric Neutron Tomography of Magnetic Fields

    Through the use of Time-of-Flight Three Dimensional Polarimetric Neutron Tomography (ToF 3DPNT) we have for the first time successfully demonstrated a technique capable of measuring and reconstructing three dimensional magnetic field strengths and directions unobtrusively and non-destructively with the potential to probe the interior of bulk samples which is not amenable otherwise. Using a pioneering polarimetric set-up for ToF neutron instrumentation in combination with a newly developed tailored reconstruction algorithm, the magnetic field generated by a current carrying solenoid has been measured and reconstructed, thereby providing the proof-of-principle of a technique able to reveal hitherto unobtainable information on the magnetic fields in the bulk of materials and devices, due to a high degree of penetration into many materials, including metals, and the sensitivity of neutron polarisation to magnetic fields. The technique puts the potential of the ToF time structure of pulsed neutron sources to full use in order to optimise the recorded information quality and reduce measurement time.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figure
