    Performing ‘Religious’ Music: Interrogating Karnatic Music within a Postcolonial Setting

    This research looks at contemporary understandings of performance arts in India, specifically Karnatic Music and Bharatnatyam as ‘religious’ arts. Historically, music and dance were performed and patronized in royal courts and temples. In the early 20th century, increased nationalist activities led to various forms of self-scrutiny about what represented ‘true’ Indian culture. By appropriating colonial discourses based on the religious/secular dichotomy, Karnatic Music was carefully constructed to represent a ‘pure’ Indian, specifically ‘Hindu’ culture that was superior to the ‘materialistic’ Western culture. Importantly, the category called divine was re-constructed and distinguished from the erotic: the divine was represented as a category that was sacred whilst the erotic represented ‘sexual impropriety.’ In so doing, performance arts in the public sphere became explicitly gendered. Feminity and masculinity were re-defined: the female body was re-imagined as ‘sexual impropriety’ when in the public sphere, but when disembodied in the private sphere could be deified as a guardian of spirituality. Traditional performing communities were marginalized while the newly defined music and dance was appropriated by the Brahmin community, who assumed the role of guardians of the newly constructed Indian-Hindu identity, resulting in caste-based ‘ownership’ of performance arts. Mechanical reproduction of Karnatic Music has created a disconnect in contemporary Indian society, in which Karnatic Music is disembodied from its contexts in order to be commodified as an individual’s artistic expression of creativity. This move marks a shift from substantive economics (music was performed and experienced within a specific context, be it royal patronage or Indian nationalist movements) to formal economics (music as a performer’s creative property). I question the understanding of Karnatic Music as ‘religious’ music that is distinguished from the ‘secular’ and seek to understand the colonial patriarchal mystification of the female body in the private sphere by deconstructing the definition of the ‘divine.’ In doing so, I also question the contemporary understanding of Karnatic Music as an item of property that disembodies the music from its historical context

    Preliminary screening of osteoporosis and osteopenia in middle aged urban women from Hyderabad (INDIA) using calcaneal QUS

    Background: Osteoporosis is a major public health problem, associated with substantial morbidity and socio-economic burden. An early detection can help in reducing the fracture rates and overall socio-economic burden in such patients. The present study was carried out to screen the bone status (osteopenia and osteoporosis) above the age of 25 years in urban women population in this region.Methods: A hospital based study was carried out in 316 women by calculating T-scores utilizing calcaneal QUS as diagnostic tool.Results: The result suggested that a substantial female population had oesteopenia and osteoporosis after the age of 45 years. The incidence of osteoporosis was (20.25%) and osteopenia (36.79%) with maximum number of both osteoporosis and osteopenic women recorded in the age group of (55-64 years). After the age of 65 years, there was an almost 100% incidence of either osteopenia or osteoporosis, indicating that it increases with age and in postmenopausal period, thereby suggesting lack of estrogenic activity might be responsible for this increasing trend. Religion, caste and diet had an influence on the outcome of osteopenic and osteoporosis score in present study, but still it has to be substantiated by conducting larger randomized clinical trials in future.Conclusions: A substantial female population was screened for osteoporosis and osteopenia using calcaneal QUS method utilizing same WHO T score criteria that otherwise shall remain undiagnosed and face the complications and menace of osteoporosis.

    Rescue of Pressure Overload-Induced Heart Failure by Estrogen Therapy.

    BackgroundEstrogen pretreatment has been shown to attenuate the development of heart hypertrophy, but it is not known whether estrogen could also rescue heart failure (HF). Furthermore, the heart has all the machinery to locally biosynthesize estrogen via aromatase, but the role of local cardiac estrogen synthesis in HF has not yet been studied. Here we hypothesized that cardiac estrogen is reduced in HF and examined whether exogenous estrogen therapy can rescue HF.Methods and resultsHF was induced by transaortic constriction in mice, and once mice reached an ejection fraction (EF) of ≈35%, they were treated with estrogen for 10 days. Cardiac structure and function, angiogenesis, and fibrosis were assessed, and estrogen was measured in plasma and in heart. Cardiac estrogen concentrations (6.18±1.12 pg/160 mg heart in HF versus 17.79±1.28 pg/mL in control) and aromatase transcripts (0.19±0.04, normalized to control, P<0.05) were significantly reduced in HF. Estrogen therapy increased cardiac estrogen 3-fold and restored aromatase transcripts. Estrogen also rescued HF by restoring ejection fraction to 53.1±1.3% (P<0.001) and improving cardiac hemodynamics both in male and female mice. Estrogen therapy stimulated angiogenesis as capillary density increased from 0.66±0.07 in HF to 2.83±0.14 (P<0.001, normalized to control) and reversed the fibrotic scarring observed in HF (45.5±2.8% in HF versus 5.3±1.0%, P<0.001). Stimulation of angiogenesis by estrogen seems to be one of the key mechanisms, since in the presence of an angiogenesis inhibitor estrogen failed to rescue HF (ejection fraction=29.3±2.1%, P<0.001 versus E2).ConclusionsEstrogen rescues pre-existing HF by restoring cardiac estrogen and aromatase, stimulating angiogenesis, and suppressing fibrosis

    Acute Ozone-Induced Differential Gene Expression Profiles in Rat Lung

    Ozone (O(3)) is an oxidant gas that can directly induce lung injury. Knowledge of the initial molecular events of the acute O(3) response would be useful in developing biomarkers of exposure or response. Toward this goal, we exposed rats to toxic concentrations of O(3) (2 and 5 ppm) for 2 hr and the molecular changes were assessed in lung tissue 2 hr postexposure using a rat cDNA expression array containing 588 characterized genes. Gene array analysis indicated differential expression in almost equal numbers of genes for the two exposure groups: 62 at 2 ppm and 57 at 5 ppm. Most of these genes were common to both exposure groups, suggesting common roles in the initial toxicity response. However, we also identified the induction of nine genes specific to 2-ppm (thyroid hormone-β receptor c-erb-A-β and glutathione reductase) or 5-ppm exposure groups (c-jun, induced nitric oxide synthase, macrophage inflammatory protein-2, and heat shock protein 27). Injury markers in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) were used to assess immediate toxicity and inflammation in rats similarly exposed. At 2 ppm, injury was marked by significant increases in BALF total protein, N-acetylglucosaminidase, and lavageable ciliated cells. Because infiltration of neutrophils was observed only at the higher 5 ppm concentration, the distinctive genes suggested a potential amplification role for inflammation in the gene profile. Although the specific gene interactions remain unclear, this is the first report indicating a dose-dependent direct and immediate induction of gene expression that may be separate from those genes involved in inflammation after acute O(3) exposure
