Deferred Action: Theoretical model of process architecture design for emergent business processes
E-Business modelling and ebusiness systems development assumes fixed company resources,
structures, and business processes. Empirical and theoretical evidence suggests that company resources
and structures are emergent rather than fixed. Planning business activity in emergent contexts requires
flexible ebusiness models based on better management theories and models . This paper builds and
proposes a theoretical model of ebusiness systems capable of catering for emergent factors that affect
business processes. Drawing on development of theories of the ‘action and design’class the Theory of
Deferred Action is invoked as the base theory for the theoretical model. A theoretical model of flexible
process architecture is presented by identifying its core components and their relationships, and then
illustrated with exemplar flexible process architectures capable of responding to emergent factors.
Managerial implications of the model are considered and the model’s generic applicability is discussed

The theory of deferred action: Designing organisations and systems for complexity
Organization and systems are real, complex entities but the science of designing them should be simple. This book explores the process of organization and systems design by redefining and extending formalism capable of representing both purposeful structure and operational needs. The author proposes the notion of deferred action to cohere rationally designed systems with actual action. Researchers will glean radically different epistemological and ontological perspectives while designers will acquire entirely different intellectual tools, principles and mechanisms of design. Managers should learn to think of organization and systems differently and possibly change their management approach

Designing information systems requirements in context: Insights from the theory of deferred action
This paper considers conceptual and contextual issues relating to the problem of
developing systems models capable of representing knowable and unknowable
information requirements. It postulates that the systemic emergence property of
systems is the cause of unknowable organisational information requirements. The
Theory of Deferred Action and its systems constructs are invoked to explain
emergence and how it can be modelled in formal systems. The insights proposed are
believed to assist designers in developing functional and relevant approaches within
dynamic organisational contexts
Molecular dynamics simulations of oscillatory Couette flows with slip boundary conditions
The effect of interfacial slip on steady-state and time-periodic flows of
monatomic liquids is investigated using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics
simulations. The fluid phase is confined between atomically smooth rigid walls,
and the fluid flows are induced by moving one of the walls. In steady shear
flows, the slip length increases almost linearly with shear rate. We found that
the velocity profiles in oscillatory flows are well described by the Stokes
flow solution with the slip length that depends on the local shear rate.
Interestingly, the rate dependence of the slip length obtained in steady shear
flows is recovered when the slip length in oscillatory flows is plotted as a
function of the local shear rate magnitude. For both types of flows, the
friction coefficient at the liquid-solid interface correlates well with the
structure of the first fluid layer near the solid wall.Comment: 31 pages, 11 figure

Both types of features are extracted automatically from gait silhouette sequences and their combination takes place by means of a pair of hidden Markov models. In the proposed system, the holistic features are initially used for capturing general gait dynamics whereas, subsequently, the model-based features are deployed for capturing more detailed sub-dynamics by refining upon the preceding general dynamics. Furthermore, the holistic and model-based features are suitably processed in order to improve the discriminatory capacity of the final system. The experimental results show that the proposed method exhibits performance advantages in comparison with popular existing methods

The proposed approach is based on the construction of a set of templates for each activity as well as on the measurement of the motion in each activity. Templates are designed so that they capture the structural and motion information that is most discriminative among activities. The direct motion measurements capture the amount of translational motion in each activity. The two features are fused at the recognition stage. Recognition is achieved in two steps by calculating the similarity between the templates and motion features of the test and reference activities. The proposed methodology is experimentally assessed and is shown to yield excellent performance.European Commissio
Human gait recognition based on multiview gait sequences

properly cited.Most of the existing gait recognition methods rely on a single view, usually the side view, of the walking person. This paper investigates the case in which several views are available for gait recognition. It is shown that each view has unequal discrimination power and, therefore, should have unequal contribution in the recognition process. In order to exploit the availability of multiple views, several methods for the combination of the results that are obtained from the individual views are tested and evaluated. A novel approach for the combination of the results from several views is also proposed based on the relative importance of each view. The proposed approach generates superior results, compared to those obtained by using individual views or by using multiple views that are combined using other combination methods.European Commissio

The proposed system uses two novel gait representations, i.e., the shifted energy image and the gait structural profile, which have increased robustness to some classes of structural variations. Furthermore, we introduce a novel method for the simulation of walking conditions and the generation of artificial subjects that are used for the application of linear discriminant analysis. In the decision stage, the two representations are fused. Thorough experimental evaluation, conducted using one traditional and two new databases, demonstrates the advantages of the proposed system in comparison with current state-of-the-art systems
