Operators manual for the magnetograph program (section 2)

    Get PDF
This manual for use of the magnetograph program describes: (1) black box use of the programs; (2) the magtape data formats used; (3) the adjustable control parameters in the program; and (4) the algorithms. With no adjustments on the control parameters this program may be used purely as a black box. For optimal use, however, the control parameters may be varied. The magtape data formats are of use in adopting other programs to look at raw data or final magnetograph data

The Hare and the Tortoise Down by the King’s Pond: A Tale of Four Translations

This paper looks at the linguistic situation on the island of Mauritius, as revealed by the analysis of four translations of a folk-tale, originally an oral tale recounted by African slaves. The languages involved are Mauritian Creole, French and English. A brief account of the Mauritian historical and socio-linguistic development is given to contextualize my investigation. I then examine the translations from the conceptual framework of ideology, arguing that not only were they the instruments of the translators’ ideological convictions but that, in the process, they also came to symbolize the asymmetrical linguistic relations in Mauritius.L’analyse de quatre traductions d’un conte folklorique mauricien, autrefois un conte oral raconté par les esclaves africains, me permet de passer en revue la hiérarchie linguistique à l’île Maurice.

Commonality and Diversity in Recordings of Beethoven’s Middle-Period String Quartets

A widespread opinion in recent research about the performance of Beethoven’s works is that artists need to restore a connection to tradition, and that recordings from the early twentieth century can help with this. However, these early recordings tell us most about the aesthetics and performance ideals of their day, and hence how Beethoven and his string quartets were received by early twentieth-century audiences. Case studies of early recordings of Beethoven middle-period quartets reveal ways in which these these performances differed, sometimes radically, from the kinds of performances Beethoven would have expected to hear, especially with regard to the use of the bow and vibrato. On the other hand, in terms of flexibility of expression these performances are close to performance ideals of the early nineteenth century. More recent recordings of this repertoire show that the artistic freedoms heard in the early twentieth-century performances have not been lost in later performances; rather, they have been renegotiated. The extension of performance options in the late twentieth and early twenty-first century recordings is due, in large measure, to the growing popularity of historically informed performance practices. This openness is heard, ironically, especially in mainstream ensembles, possibly because there the imperative to Werktreue—fidelity to the text, and to the composer—is differently felt, or less heeded. Again, performances reflect the times: the fashions, understandings, and ideas about Beethoven of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries
