    Le Glossaire: 125 ans de sciences citoyennes en dialectologie

    The Glossary of the Patois of Western Switzerland is a pioneering citizen science project in the field of linguistics and dialectology: born at the end of the 19th century, it has been continuously funded, and active, ever since. The Glossary is based on the collection and analysis of the local variants of the French-speaking patois, which were threatened by rapid extinction, through the written exchange of questionnaires, instructions, data and feedbacks with a network of dedicated “correspondents”. In this article, we analyse this project with a modern reading grid by looking at how citizen participation in a research project was conceived and designed more than a hundred years ago. We examine three types of questions: the scientific objectives of the project and its historical context; the design and organisation of citizen collaboration in the project, in particular the nature of the tasks entrusted to citizens and the strategies for controlling the quality of the data; and finally, the various communication tools of the project, which allowed citizen participation during a long (10 years) data collection process, as well as the continuous engagement of the political funders (French-speaking Cantons and the Swiss Confederation) during 125 years so far

    Cet article se penche sur la diglossie entre patois et français en Suisse romande entre 1800 et 1970. Par l’analyse des discours sur les lexèmes régionaux et les idéologies langagières qu’ils contiennent, nous chercherons à comprendre le contact entre ces deux langues. Le corpus très diversifié (presse, cacologies, glossaires, dictionnaires et chroniques de langage) a permis de découvrir une voix unifiée attestée sur une longue durée et qui accepte les dialectalismes dans un certain cadre. Même dans les discours puristes, les emprunts aux patois sont vus comme une richesse, un témoignage du genius loci, du terroir. Ils viennent même au secours du français considéré comme corrompu par les emprunts à l’allemand et à l’anglais.This article explores the diglossia between Patois and French in French-speaking Switzerland between 1800 and 1970. We examine the contact between these two languages through the analysis of the discourse on regional words and the language ideologies they express. Our diversified corpus (newspapers, cacologies, dictionaries and language columns) allowed us to observe a unified voice on the long term, which accepts regional words under specific conditions. Even in purist discourse, borrowings from Patois are considered a treasure, a testimony of the genius loci, of a particular region. Patois is even called upon to help French, which is considered corrupted by borrowings from German and English

    L'informatisation du FEW: attentes et modélisation

    peer reviewedThe computerisation project of the Französisches Etymologisches Wörterbuch aims at taking this reference dictionary on Romance linguistics out of its current state of under- utilization resulting from the complexity of its structures. In view of this, we have submitted on September 2007 a questionnaire designed to better understand the wishes and common practices of FEW users. In the present paper, we examine the first results of the survey and its impact on the future electronic modelisation of the FEW by focusing on cross-searching fields. Implicit information, such as dates, regionalisms or suffixes cannot be found automatically, except by using external tools, that must therefore be taken into account in the computerisation. The solutions considered here do not mean that "classic reading" will become obsolete. Nevertheless, we hope that we will be able to give users new ways to get to the dictionary thus allowing a new and more efficient use of the FEW
