    Understanding Well-Being in Multi-Levels: A review

    Well-being is not only an emerging research agenda, but also a critical issue concerning the individual as well as the societal development, because how the issue is viewed has a huge theoretical as well as practical, even policy, implication. In academic, while some argue that well-being is in the subjective perception of one’s life or psychological functioning, others argue that well-being is in the objective conditions and the broader environment. This paper, drawing on psychology tradition, tries to go beyond the dichotomy of well-being as either an individual attribute or external conditions. Instead, this article acknowledges the multi-levels of well-being are closely tied and should be taken into accounts when well-being is concerned. We will provide a brief review of the two major approaches – subjective well-being and quality of life – of well-being before the multi-level approach is introduced. The strength and challenges of the multilevel approach will be discussed

    Presenting a 4-Item spiritual well-being index (4-ISWBI)

    Spiritual well-being is perceived to be reflected in the quality of relationships that people have in four areas, namely with God, others, nature, and self. Many spiritual well-being questionnaires exist, but not many provide an adequate assessment of these four relationships. As part of a survey of parental perceptions of holistic early childhood education in kindergartens in Hong Kong, 1383 parents and 165 teachers, from 22 kindergartens, completed a written survey questionnaire which helped to investigate the potential for a single question with four parts to provide a valid and reliable measure for spiritual well-being. Face, content, and construct validity were confirmed, together with Cronbach’s alpha providing a test for reliability. Similarity of findings from regression analysis of items in the 4-ISWBI with domains of spiritual well-being in the 20-item SHALOM, as well as partial discrimination by gender, reinforce the validity of the 4-ISWBI as a sound indicator of spiritual well-being and its four domains. In brief, the 4-Item Spiritual Well-Being Index (4-ISWBI) promises to be a handy instrument to aid researchers looking for a convenient, concise, coherent indicator, but not an exhaustive measure, of spiritual well-being. © 2017 by the authors

    Drosophila Proliferating Cell Nuclear Antigen - Structural and Functional Homology with Its Mammalian Counterpart

    A protein with an apparent mass of 36 kDa was purified from Drosophila melanogaster embryos using a protocol developed for the purification of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) from human 293 cells. The Drosophila protein comigrated with human PCNA on one-dimensional sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gels and cross-reacted with monoclonal anti-rabbit PCNA antibodies. NH2-terminal amino acid sequence analysis revealed that the putative Drosophila PCNA was highly homologous to human PCNA. Of the first 22 amino acids, 16 were identical, and 4 of the remaining 6 were changed conservatively. Results of total amino acid analysis were also consistent with a high degree of similarity between Drosophila PCNA and human PCNA. Functional analysis using the reconstituted simian virus 40 in vitro DNA replication system demonstrated that Drosophila PCNA could substitute, albeit with reduced efficiency, for human PCNA in stimulating simian virus 40 DNA synthesis. Affinity-purified anti-Drosophila PCNA antibodies cross-reacted with human PCNA and were able to recognize specifically Drosophila PCNA both on crude homogenate immunoblots and by indirect immunofluorescence analysis of proliferating cells in larval tissues in situ. These antibodies thus promise to be useful probes for the study of cell proliferation in this rapidly developing organism

    Topological spin excitations of Heisenberg antiferromagnets in two dimensions

    In this paper we discuss the construction and the dynamics of vortex-like topological spin excitations in the Schwinger-boson description of Heisenberg antiferromagnets in two dimensions. The topological spin excitations are Dirac fermions (with gap) when spin value SS is a half-integer.     Enhancement of Power Output by using Alginate Immobilized Algae in Biophotovoltaic Devices.

    We report for the first time a photosynthetically active algae immobilized in alginate gel within a fuel cell design for generation of bioelectricity. The algal-alginate biofilm was utilized within a biophotovoltaics (BPV) device developed for direct bioelectricity generation from photosynthesis. A peak power output of 0.289 mWm-2 with an increase of 18% in power output compared to conventional suspension culture BPV device was observed. The increase in maximum power density was correlated to the maximum relative electron transport rate (rETRm). The semi-dry type of photosynthetically active biofilm proposed in this work may offer significantly improved performances in terms of fuel cell design, bioelectricity generation, oxygen production and CO2 reduction

    The one-component plasma: a conceptual approach

    The one-component plasma (OCP) represents the simplest statistical mechanical model of a Coulomb system. For this reason, it has been extensively studied over the last forty years. The advent of the integral equations has resulted in a dramatic improvement in our ability to carry out numerical calculations, but came at the expense of a physical insight gained in a simpler analytic theory. In this paper we present an extension of the Debye-Hueckel (DH) theory to the OCP. The theory allows for analytic calculations of all the thermodynamic functions, as well as the structure factor. The theory explicitly satisfies the Stillinger-Lovett and, for small couplings, the compressibility sum rules, implying its internal self consistency.Comment: 28 pages, 5 Postscript figures, uses elsart.sty, accepted for publication in Physica

    On the possibility of a metallic phase in granular superconducting films

    We investigate the possibility of finding a zero-temperature metallic phase in granular superconducting films. We are able to identify the breakdown of the conventional treatment of these systems as dissipative Bose systems. We do not find a metallic state at zero temperature. At finite temperatures, we find that the system exhibit crossover behaviour which may have implications for the analysis of experimental results.
