Nationalism, political community and the representation of society: or, why feeling at home is not a substitute for public space

Discussion of political and legal citizenship requires attention to social solidarity. Current approaches to citizenship, however, tend to proceed on abstract bases, neglecting this sociological dimension. This is partly because a tacit understanding of what constitutes a `society' has been developed through implicit reliance on the idea of `nation'. Issues of social belonging are addressed more directly in communitarian and multiculturalist discourses. Too often, however, different modes of solidarity and participation are confused. Scale is often neglected. The model of `nation' again prefigures the ways in which membership and difference are constructed. The present paper suggests the value of maintaining a distinction among relational networks, cultural or legal categories, and discursive publics. The first constitute community in a sense quite different from either of the second and third. Categories, however, are increasingly prominent in largescale social life. But the idea of the public is crucial to conceptualizing democratic participation

Críticas e possibilidades da educação e da escola na contemporaneidade: lições de Theodor Adorno para o currículo Criticism and possibilities of education and school in the present: lessons of Theodor Adorno for the curriculum

O texto apresenta a dimensão sociológica do pensamento de Theodor Adorno e a sua análise crítica dirigida à escola e ao sistema de ensino, destacando sua atualidade. Retoma-se, também, a discussão sobre a educação para a "emancipação", segundo o teórico, procurando demonstrar que o desafio apontado por ele, para que a Educação possa ser capaz de criar a base para a construção de uma sociedade livre da barbárie, continua atual. Transportada para os desafios que se colocam para a Educação, no atual cenário do neoliberalismo globalizado e de suas contradições, a apropriação do potencial da epistemologia de Adorno torna-se fundamental ao debate da relação entre a escola e a sociedade no mundo contemporâneo, evidenciando como o seu pensamento reforça posturas que, na contemporaneidade, tributam à escola um papel importante na construção de novas relações pedagógicas, orientadas para a produção de novas formas de cidadania, visando construir um mundo no qual se possa viver com justiça e dignidade.<br>The text presents the sociological dimension of the thought of Theodor Adorno and his critical analyses pointed to the school and to the educational system, highlighting how it is up-to-date. It also comes back to the discussion of Adorno about education for the emancipation and it shows that the challenge pointed by him for the education to be capable of creating the foundations for the construction of a society free from barbarism continues to be present. Transferred to the challenges that lay ahead for education, in the present scenery of the global new liberalism and its contradictions, the appropriation of the potential of the epistemology of Adorno becomes fundamental in the debate about the relation between the school and the society in the contemporary world, showing how his knowledge reinforces postures that, in the present, demand from the school an important role in the construction of new pedagogical relations for the production of new forms of citizenship looking to construct a world in which it is possible to live with justice and dignity

Reformas e reformismo: "democracia progressiva" e políticas sociais (ou "para uma teoria política da reforma sanitária")

Na introdução deste artigo, o autor parte de uma preocupação com o debate atual em torno do processo de tentativa de inovação política setorial que vem sendo designado entre nós pela expressão "Reforma Sanitária". Chama a atenção para os diferentes sentidos em que, a seu ver, esta expressão tem sido utilizada no Brasil E se dispõe a deter-se, particularmente, em um destes sentidos: o que se aproxima da formulação italiana de mesmo nome (a "Riforma Sanitária"). Esta discussão o leva, no corpo do artigo propriamente dito, a tratar, centralmente, da relação entre as características assumidas pela ordenação política liberal contemporânea e a estratégia gramsci-togliattiana de transição no socialismo, no que tange ao tema das chamadas "Políticas Públicas" e, mais particularmente, das "Políticas Sociais". O artigo termina com um esboço inicial de um projeto de investigação comparativa nesta área.<br>In the introduction, the author discusses the current debate on the "Reforma Sanitária"; a proposal to innovate health policy. The author draws attention to the different meanings that can be attributed, in his opinion, to the use of this term in Brazil. He focusses particularly on the meaning closer to that of the Italian proposal of the same name ("Riforma Sanitaria"). The discussion leads the author to question the relationship between the characteristics of the contemporary political liberal organization and the Gramsci-Togliattian strategy of the transition in socialism, within the field of "Public Policies" and more specifically ''Social Policies". The article ends with a preliminary outline a comparative investigation in this field
