A Theological Context of Work from the Catholic Social Encyclical Tradition
This article draws upon 100 years of writings which are referred to as the Catholic Social Tradition (CST). Using this tradition as a guide, the nature of work is explored along with the principles and virtues which vitalize the deepest dimension of work — how it affects the dignity of the human person. It develops five operational ethical principles which can be applied to questions of workplace ethics. Organizational policies and programs that seem consistent with CST are also discussed.

Culture as the Basis of The Good Entrepreneur
Human beings may have conquered markets, introduced technical innovations, built enterprises, and accumulated great wealth, but we may be failing in one of the most important tasks of our culture – the passing on of a moral tradition that builds good character in our children that contributes to the moral and spiritual capital of the country. Entrepreneurs are not only a powerful force in our economy, but also our culture because they create trends, break molds, and cause significant changes within society. Their enormous creativity stems from their skills, experiences, and characteristics – habits if you will – that some people describe as “entrepreneurial virtues.” Christianity and particularly Catholicism, for example, has developed a social tradition that reconnects the entrepreneur’s work to a moral and spiritual vision of the enterprise. When Christian culture is at its best, it generates an economic order that humanizes the entrepreneurial realm in a way that generates faithful companies that contribute to the common good
FDI in Space: Spatial Autoregressive Relationships in Foreign Direct Investment
Theoretical models of foreign direct investment (FDI) have only recently begun to model the role of third countries, and the empirical FDI literature has almost exclusively examined bilateral FDI data without recognizing the potential interdependence between FDI decisions to alternative host countries. This paper uses spatial econometric techniques to examine the spatial correlation between FDI to alternative (neighboring) regions. The sign of such correlations can provide evidence for or against alternative theories for FDI motivations. Using data on OECD countries from 1980-2000, we find evidence consistent with export platform FDI in Europe.

Geospatial drivers of the groundwater δ18O isoscape in a temperate maritime climate (Republic of Ireland)
In recent years, the concept of “isoscapes” has been used to describe spatiotemporal stable isotope distributions within natural environments including groundwater systems at multiple scales. This study presents an updated groundwater δ18O isoscape for the Republic of Ireland and describes the climatic and geological drivers influencing 18O composition. In all, 142 geographically and geologically representative groundwater installations were sampled and analysed, in addition to 35 samples from six nested boreholes. Geospatially, Irish groundwater exhibits high δ18O values in southern and western coastal regions, becoming progressively depleted inland before reaching lowest measured values along the eastern coast, equating to a national groundwater δ18O profile range of approximately 3‰. Groundwater δ18O composition is primarily driven by location with respect to orographically influenced rainfall deposition and annual precipitation volume, with a bias towards winter recharge. Results also demonstrate that local/regional (hydro)geological setting exerts a secondary influence on δ18O composition via infiltration and recharge mechanisms. “Flashy” groundwater systems (e.g. karst limestones) are more likely to exhibit seasonal groundwater δ18O patterns, whereas low productivity systems with high residence times (e.g. granites), tend to display a dampened composition to groundwater recharge and exhibit more temporally constant δ18O values. The derived δ18O isoscape enhances current understanding of what is a geologically distinct groundwater setting, whilst also potentially serving as a δ18O “sentinel” for continental Europe, with respect to both groundwater and precipitation, due to Ireland’s geographic location
Neuroelectronic and Nanophotonic Devices Based on Nanocoaxial Arrays

BurnsRecent progress in the study of the brain has been greatly facilitated by the development of new measurement tools capable of minimally-invasive, robust coupling to neuronal assemblies. Two prominent examples are the microelectrode array, which enables electrical signals from large numbers of neurons to be detected and spatiotemporally correlated, and optogenetics, which enables the electrical activity of cells to be controlled with light. In the former case, high spatial density is desirable but, as electrode arrays evolve toward higher density and thus smaller pitch, electrical crosstalk increases. In the latter, finer control over light input is desirable, to enable improved studies of neuroelectronic pathways emanating from specific cell stimulation. Herein, we introduce a coaxial electrode architecture that is uniquely suited to address these issues, as it can simultaneously be utilized as an optical waveguide and a shielded electrode in dense arrays.Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2017.Submitted to: Boston College. Quantifying the relationship between mechanical loading and the skeletal response in pre- and early-pubertal girls
PURPOSEBefore exercise prescription for bone health can be recommended, the relationship between mechanical loading characteristics and the skeletal response need to be quantified. We asked i) does moderate impact exercise result in a greater gain in BMC than low impact exercise, ii) what are the loading characteristics associated with a moderate and low impact exercise program and does this differ from non-structured play?, and iii) does loading history affect the osteogenic response to a moderate or low impact program? METHODSSixty-eight pre- and early-pubertal girls (aged 8.9 +/- 0.2 yrs) were randomized to take part in a moderate or low impact exercise program 3 times/wk for 8.5 mnths. The number and type of loads associated with the exercise classes and non-structured play (recess) were assessed from video footage. The magnitude of load was assessed using a pedar in-sole mobile system. Hours of moderate and high impact organized sport were assessed from a physical activity questionnaire. RESULTSThe moderate and low impact exercise programs consisted of -400 impacts per class, but the jumping, hopping and dynamic activities performed during the moderate impact program produced forces ranging from 2 to 4 times body weight (BW) compared to -1 BW for the low impact program. Moderate impact exercise resulted in a 2.7% greater gain in BMC at the tibia compared to the low impact exercise. The moderate impact exercise program consisted of fewer low impacts (1-2 BW) and a higher number of moderate impacts (2-4BW) compared to those typically performed during non-structured play. There were greater gains in BMC in subjects participating in the moderate versus the low impact exercise programs who participated in 2 to 3 hours of moderate impact sports outside school (2.5% to 4.5%, p CONCLUSIONApproximately 400 impacts ranging 2-4 BW, 3 times/wk was enough stimuli to result in an osteogenic response in normally active girls; even in those actively involved in moderate impact sports outside school.<br /
Theory of Thermodynamic Magnetic Oscillations in Quasi-One-Dimensional Conductors
The second order correction to free energy due to the interaction between
electrons is calculated for a quasi-one-dimensional conductor exposed to a
magnetic field perpendicular to the chains. It is found that specific heat,
magnetization and torque oscillate when the magnetic field is rotated in the
plane perpendicular to the chains or when the magnitude of magnetic filed is
