    Skills and Perceptions of Entry-Level Staff Supervision

    The following study consisted of 532 respondents to a survey related to the supervision of entrylevel staff in student affairs. Participants included both supervisors of entry-level staff and entrylevel staff themselves. Individuals shared their thoughts and experiences regarding the supervision of this population. Themes emerged in four areas: Readiness for the supervisory role, challenges related to supervision, supervisor skills, and working through transition. Implications and recommendations for practice and further research are discussed

    Susceptibility Amplitude Ratios Near a Lifshitz Point

    The susceptibility amplitude ratio in the neighborhood of a uniaxial Lifshitz point is calculated at one-loop level using field-theoretic and ϵL\epsilon_{L}-expansion methods. We use the Schwinger parametrization of the propagator in order to split the quadratic and quartic part of the momenta, as well as a new special symmetry point suitable for renormalization purposes.     The Association Between Birthweight and Current Blood Pressure: A Cross-Sectional Study in an Australian Aboriginal Community

    Objectives: To study the relationship of blood pressure to birthweight and current body mass index in a population with high rates of low birthweight (< 2.5 kg). Design: A cross-sectional population screening program conducted between 1992 and 1998, with retrospective retrieval of birthweights. Setting: A remote coastal Australian Aboriginal community with a high prevalence of diabetes, cardiovascular and renal disease. Participants: Eighty-two per cent of the community members (1473/1805) were screened. Birthweights were available for 767 (71%) of the screened participants aged 7-43 years. Main outcome measures: The association between birthweight and current blood pressure, accounting for current body mass index. Results: Mean birthweights were low, and 18% of children and 35% of adults had been low-birthweight babies. In children (7-17 years), blood pressure was not correlated with birthweight, but in adults there was an inverse correlation - a 1 kg increase in birthweight was associated with a 2.9 mmHg (95% CI, 0.3-5.5 mmHg) decrease in systolic blood pressure, after adjusting for age, sex and current weight. Overweight adults with low birthweight had the highest blood pressures. Conclusions: Low birthweight is significantly associated with higher blood pressure in adult life, and the effect is amplified by higher current weight. Given the high rates of low birthweight in Aboriginal people in remote areas, and the detrimental effect of higher blood pressures on chronic diseases (currently present in epidemic proportions), interventions should focus on improving birthweights and on weight control in adolescents and adults. Special attention should be paid to children with low birthweight to avoid their becoming overweight in adult life

    Anomalous dimensions and phase transitions in superconductors

    The anomalous scaling in the Ginzburg-Landau model for the superconducting phase transition is studied. It is argued that the negative sign of the η\eta exponent is a consequence of a special singular behavior in momentum space. The negative sign of η\eta comes from the divergence of the critical correlation function at finite distances. This behavior implies the existence of a Lifshitz point in the phase diagram. The anomalous scaling of the vector potential is also discussed. It is shown that the anomalous dimension of the vector potential ηA=4d\eta_A=4-d has important consequences for the critical dynamics in superconductors. The frequency-dependent conductivity is shown to obey the scaling σ(ω)ξz2\sigma(\omega)\sim\xi^{z-2}.     Ultrasound in evaluation of post-interventional femoral vein obstruction: a case report

    Ultrasound is the preferred imaging modality in diagnosis of vascular complications following cardiac catheterization and intervention. In some cases, however, bleeding surrounding the femoral vessels, may severely distort the color Doppler images, making detection of venous complications especially difficult. This report refers to such a case where post-catheterization haematoma was suspected to cause an obstruction of the femoral vein. Spectral Doppler recordings of blood flow in the common femoral vein, up-stream, distal to the hemorrhagic area, confirmed the diagnosis of obstruction by demonstrating changes in the venous flow pattern in the common femoral vein, consistent with venous hypertension. Due to the poor quality of the ultrasound images, the exact cause of the obstruction had to be established by another imaging modality, not affected by haemorrhages. CT showed that the common femoral vein was compressed at the puncture site by surrounding haemorrhages. Thus, when bleeding due to cardiac catheterization is associated with possible venous obstruction and findings by color Doppler are equivocal due to degradation of the color-Doppler image, detection of venous hypertension by spectral Doppler, performed distal to the bleeding area, strongly supports the presence of venous obstruction where the exact cause may be established by CT

    Metabolic state alters economic decision making under risk in humans

    Background: Animals' attitudes to risk are profoundly influenced by metabolic state (hunger and baseline energy stores). Specifically, animals often express a preference for risky (more variable) food sources when below a metabolic reference point (hungry), and safe (less variable) food sources when sated. Circulating hormones report the status of energy reserves and acute nutrient intake to widespread targets in the central nervous system that regulate feeding behaviour, including brain regions strongly implicated in risk and reward based decision-making in humans. Despite this, physiological influences per se have not been considered previously to influence economic decisions in humans. We hypothesised that baseline metabolic reserves and alterations in metabolic state would systematically modulate decision-making and financial risk-taking in humans. Methodology/Principal Findings: We used a controlled feeding manipulation and assayed decision-making preferences across different metabolic states following a meal. To elicit risk-preference, we presented a sequence of 200 paired lotteries, subjects' task being to select their preferred option from each pair. We also measured prandial suppression of circulating acyl-ghrelin (a centrally-acting orexigenic hormone signalling acute nutrient intake), and circulating leptin levels (providing an assay of energy reserves). We show both immediate and delayed effects on risky decision-making following a meal, and that these changes correlate with an individual's baseline leptin and changes in acyl-ghrelin levels respectively. Conclusions/Significance: We show that human risk preferences are exquisitely sensitive to current metabolic state, in a direction consistent with ecological models of feeding behaviour but not predicted by normative economic theory. These substantive effects of state changes on economic decisions perhaps reflect shared evolutionarily conserved neurobiological mechanisms. We suggest that this sensitivity in human risk-preference to current metabolic state has significant implications for both real-world economic transactions and for aberrant decision-making in eating disorders and obesity

    Critical behavior at m-axial Lifshitz points: field-theory analysis and ϵ\epsilon-expansion results

    The critical behavior of d-dimensional systems with an n-component order parameter is reconsidered at (m,d,n)-Lifshitz points, where a wave-vector instability occurs in an m-dimensional subspace of Rd{\mathbb R}^d. Our aim is to sort out which ones of the previously published partly contradictory ϵ\epsilon-expansion results to second order in ϵ=4+m2d\epsilon=4+\frac{m}{2}-d are correct. To this end, a field-theory calculation is performed directly in the position space of d=4+m2ϵd=4+\frac{m}{2}-\epsilon dimensions, using dimensional regularization and minimal subtraction of ultraviolet poles. The residua of the dimensionally regularized integrals that are required to determine the series expansions of the correlation exponents ηl2\eta_{l2} and ηl4\eta_{l4} and of the wave-vector exponent βq\beta_q to order ϵ2\epsilon^2 are reduced to single integrals, which for general m=1,...,d-1 can be computed numerically, and for special values of m, analytically. Our results are at variance with the original predictions for general m. For m=2 and m=6, we confirm the results of Sak and Grest [Phys. Rev.
