    Japanese growth and stagnation: a Keynesian perspective

    This paper uses a modified Harrodian model to understand both the long period of rapid Japanese growth and the recent period of stagnation. The model has multiple steady-growth solutions when the labour supply is highly elastic, and government intervention, we argue, took the Japanese economy onto a high-growth trajectory. Labour constraints began to ap- pear around 1970, and a combination of high saving rates and slow popu- lation growth account for the stagnation of the 1990s. This combination produces a structural liquidity trap and threatens the sustainability of at- tempts to ensure near full employment through fiscal policy or by running a persistent trade surplus.     A crowdsourcing approach to collecting photo-based insect and plant observation records

    Scientific field observation by members of the public is known as citizen science and has become popular all across the world. Citizen science is advantageous for collecting large amounts of scientific data and can be seen as a crowdsourcing approach to data collection. Information and communications technology is enhancing the availability of citizen science. Mobile devices, such as mobile phones, that have a digital camera with a global positioning system (GPS) are necessities for contemporary life and can be utilised as powerful observation tools in citizen science. A web-based system has been developed as a data collection tool for citizen science. Participants submit an e-mail with a photo taken by their mobile phones. The photos contain location information, which can be easily and automatically embedded if the mobile phone is equipped with GPS. Collaboration has been undertaken with regional event managers, such as museum curators and held citizen science events in each region and for various target taxonomic groups. All photos were stored in the data server and the organisms were taxonomically identified by citizen scientists, regional managers and the authors. In total, 154 species and 843 data records were collected in this project conducted from 2011 to 2016

    Odor of ar-turmerone, α-curcumene, and limonene derivatives depending on their chirality

    The combination of many kinds of odor molecules produces the characteristic aromas of natural odor materials. We found that the odors of such materials were expressed by a set of constituents with similar structures by the investigations of the aroma profiles of several incenses [1]. Recent studies about the olfactory mechanism show that several olfactory receptors interact with one odorant molecule with different intensities and one olfactory receptor responds to different odorant molecules with similar structures. The consequences of this mechanism are that the interactions of several constituents with similar structures are important for the aroma profile. We investigated the relationship between odorant structure and the aroma characteristics of odor molecules focusing on their chirality.                Stereoisomers of ar-turmerone, α-curcumene, and limonene (Fig. 1) have been reported to have different odors. We synthesized a series of derivatives of these compounds to get insight into their structural similarities, especially those relating to the chirality and its interaction with olfactory receptors.     Purkinje cells originate from cerebellar ventricular zone progenitors positive for Neph3 and E-cadherin

    AbstractGABAergic Purkinje cells (PCs) provide the primary output from the cerebellar cortex, which controls movement and posture. Although the mechanisms of PC differentiation have been well studied, the precise origin and initial specification mechanism of PCs remain to be clarified. Here, we identified a cerebellar and spinal cord GABAergic progenitor-selective cell surface marker, Neph3, which is a direct downstream target gene of Ptf1a, an essential regulator of GABAergic neuron development. Using FACS, Neph3+ GABAergic progenitors were sorted from the embryonic cerebellum, and the cell fate of this population was mapped by culturing in vitro. We found that most of the Neph3+ populations sorted from the mouse E12.5 cerebellum were fated to differentiate into PCs while the remaining small fraction of Neph3+ cells were progenitors for Pax2+ interneurons, which are likely to be deep cerebellar nuclei GABAergic neurons. These results were confirmed by short-term in vivo lineage-tracing experiments using transgenic mice expressing Neph3 promoter-driven GFP. In addition, we identified E-cadherin as a marker selectively expressed by a dorsally localized subset of cerebellar Neph3+ cells. Sorting experiments revealed that the Neph3+ E-cadherinhigh population in the embryonic cerebellum defined PC progenitors while progenitors for Pax2+ interneurons were enriched in the Neph3+ E-cadherinlow population. Taken together, our results identify two spatially demarcated subregions that generate distinct cerebellar GABAergic subtypes and reveal the origin of PCs in the ventricular zone of the cerebellar primordium

    Neural network-based virtual microphone estimation with virtual microphone and beamformer-level multi-task loss

    Array processing performance depends on the number of microphones available. Virtual microphone estimation (VME) has been proposed to increase the number of microphone signals artificially. Neural network-based VME (NN-VME) trains an NN with a VM-level loss to predict a signal at a microphone location that is available during training but not at inference. However, this training objective may not be optimal for a specific array processing back-end, such as beamforming. An alternative approach is to use a training objective considering the array-processing back-end, such as a loss on the beamformer output. This approach may generate signals optimal for beamforming but not physically grounded. To combine the advantages of both approaches, this paper proposes a multi-task loss for NN-VME that combines both VM-level and beamformer-level losses. We evaluate the proposed multi-task NN-VME on multi-talker underdetermined conditions and show that it achieves a 33.1 % relative WER improvement compared to using only real microphones and 10.8 % compared to using a prior NN-VME approach.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, 1 tabl

    A case of cardiac sarcoidosis masquerading as arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy awaiting heart transplant

    SummaryWe report a case of 45-year-old man, who was diagnosed with arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) and presented with right ventricular (RV) enlargement with a global decrease in RV contractility accompanied by impairment of left ventricular function. He was placed on the heart transplant waiting list. Endomyocardial biopsy from RV septal wall did not show any evidence of sarcoidosis or inflammatory change. Four years after he was put on the heart transplant waiting list, a computed tomography chest scan for the purpose of anatomical evaluation for coronary sinus prior to biventricular pacing lead implantation incidentally showed bilateral hilar lymphadenopathy, which suggested the possibility of sarcoidosis. Biopsy of the inguinal lymph node pathologically was consistent with sarcoidosis. The 2[18F]fluoro-2-deoxy-d-glucose positron emission tomography scanning (FDG-PET) demonstrated intense uptake in the myocardium, and the patient was finally diagnosed as having cardiac sarcoidosis. After steroid treatment, the abnormal FDG-PET uptake disappeared. The patient therefore represented a case of cardiac sarcoidosis masquerading as ARVC. It should be recognized that RV involvement is one of the manifestations in cardiac sarcoidosis

    Outcomes of Durable Mechanical Circulatory Support in Myocarditis: Analysis of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation Registry for Mechanically Assisted Circulatory Support Registry

    Myocarditis can be refractory to medical therapy and require durable mechanical circulatory support (MCS). The characteristics and outcomes of these patients are not known. We identified all patients with clinically-diagnosed or pathology-proven myocarditis who underwent mechanical circulatory support in the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation Registry for Mechanically Assisted Circulatory Support registry (2013-2016). The characteristics and outcomes of these patients were compared to those of patients with nonischemic cardiomyopathy (NICM). Out of 14,062 patients in the registry, 180 (1.2%) had myocarditis and 6,602 (46.9%) had NICM. Among patients with myocarditis, duration of heart failure was22%, 1-12 months in 22.6%, and \u3e1 year in 55.4%. Compared with NICM, patients with myocarditis were younger (45 vs. 52 years, P \u3c 0.001) and were more often implanted with Interagency Registry for Mechanically Assisted Circulatory Support profile 1 (30% vs. 15%, P \u3c 0.001). Biventricular mechanical support ( biventricular ventricular assist device [BIVAD] or total artificial heart) was implanted more frequently in myocarditis (18% vs. 6.7%, P \u3c 0.001). Overall postimplant survival was not different between myocarditis and NICM (left ventricular assist device: P = 0.27, BIVAD: P = 0.50). The proportion of myocarditis patients that have recovered by 12 months postimplant was significantly higher in myocarditis compared to that of NICM (5% vs. 1.7%, P = 0.0003). Adverse events (bleeding, infection, and neurologic dysfunction) were all lower in the myocarditis than NICM. In conclusion, although myocarditis patients who receive durable MCS are sicker preoperatively with higher needs for biventricular MCS, their overall MCS survival is noninferior to NICM. Patients who received MCS for myocarditis are more likely than NICM to have MCS explanted due to recovery, however, the absolute rates of recovery were low
