    17P. Building ICT Success Using PBL Based Practices

    Increasingly, nowadays students must learn more advanced technical skills in order to secure jobs in a competitive 21st century workforce. This is true even in the Gulf Countries, including the UAE, where less IT work opportunities are available and where competition to find a good IT job is becoming harder. Yet the curriculum that was available to teach them these cutting-edge skills was often textbook-based, uninspiring, and limited in its appeal. Therefore, it was essential to address these issues at the curriculum of developmental program of United Arab Emirates University (UAEU) before students move on to their specific discipline. Considering the earlier mentioned flaws in IT, UGRU curriculum, leadership team in spring 2005 decided to introduce critical and creative thinking and cognition based ICT literacy program along with PBL (Problem Based Learning). The basic objectives of the PBL projects are to promote (i) Research, (ii) Critical Thinking, and (iii) Application of ICT knowledge. The themes of the projects are based on geo-social, scientific or general awareness. In this paper the IT UGRU developmental program will be compared to those counterparts that exist in leading Universities such as UAE, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Australia, New Zealand, Norway, UK, Canada, and USA. This paper describes the PBL based teaching strategies and their overall effectiveness. It also discusses the impact of these projects on student learning and achieving educational goals. Results are very encouraging. The outcome of this research indicates that using PBL in ICT classrooms can help students become self learners, able to search out, understand, analyze, and synthesize information in a better way. It also helps them to understand the real value of ICT in their lives

    High fluoride and low pH level have been detected in popular flavoured beverages in Malaysia

    Objective: In children, excessive ingestion of fluoride from different sources including bottled drinking water and flavoured beverages or soft drinks can lead to the development of dental fluorosis. In addition, the pH level of beverages is important. Low pH can cause dental erosion. In this study we explore the fluoride content and pH level of certain popular beverages available in Malaysian supermarkets and hawkers' stalls. Methods: Bottled drinking water and selected popular flavoured packet drinks were purchased from a supermarket and the corresponding flavoured hawkers' drinks, from a hawker's stall in Kuala Lumpur. Fluoride and pH of the beverages were determined using digital fluoride meter and digital pH meter respectively. Results: It was found that fluoride content and pH level vary among the beverages. The mean fluoride content in both packet and hawkers' drinks (7.64±1.88 mg/L, 7.51±1.60 mg/L, respectively) was approximately 7 times higher than the bottled drinking water (1.05±0.35 mg/L). Among the beverages, the tea packet drink was found to contain the highest amount of fluoride (13.02±0.23 mg/L). The mean pH of bottled-drinking water was near neutral (6.96±0.17), but acidic for both supermarket (4.78.00±0.49) and hawkers' drinks (5.73±0.24). The lychee packet drink had the lowest pH level (2.97±0.03). Conclusions: Due to the wide variation of the fluoride content and pH level of the drinks tested in this study, it is recommended that steps should be taken to control the fluoride concentration and pH level in beverages if dental fluorosis and erosion are to be prevented.     A scalable optoelectronic neural probe architecture with self-diagnostic capability

    There is a growing demand for the development of new types of implantable optoelectronics to support both basic neuroscience and optogenetic treatments for neurological disorders. Target specification requirements include multi-site optical stimulation, programmable radiance profile, safe operation, and miniaturization. It is also preferable to have a simple serial interface rather than large numbers of control lines. This paper demonstrates an optrode structure comprising of a standard complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor process with 18 optical stimulation drivers. Furthermore, diagnostic sensing circuitry is incorporated to determine the long-term functionality of the photonic elements. A digital control system is incorporated to allow independent multisite control and serial communication with external control units

    Context-Aware Service Discovering System for Nomad Users

    International audienceThis paper presents an architecture for a system that provides nomad users, context-aware personalised services. Users might need any sort of services: information about the weather forecast for the next day, or about a museum in the neighbour worth to visit. These services are known as stateless services. More complex situations ocurre when services are stateful. Such services are, for example those which need users to be logged in (e.g. booking a room in a hotel). The question discussed in the text are those related to: i) user's privacy, ii) recommendation and discovery of services, iii) composition of recommended services into a composite service, and iv) execution of the resulting composite service
